A Death a Day: March 2

On March 2, 1982, 6-year-old Michael Durhkoop was crushed to death by his school bus driver when she ran him over after dropping him off near his home on Cork Glen Way in Springfield.

After dropping the children off, the driver started the bus and began to make a left turn when she heard children shouting because she had struck Duhrkoop with the left fender of her bus and knocked him to the ground. She stopped the bus, looked around, then continued, assuming the children were just making noise, rather than attempting to alert her to the danger she had placed the child in.

The loud thump of the left rear wheel of her bus crushing Duhrkoop finally alerted her to the child's presence.
