A Death a Day: February 13

On February 13, 2008, 33-year-old teacher's assistant Ashley McIntosh died in the Fairfax Hospital after having been mortally injured the previous day by Fairfax County Police Officer Amanda R. Perry, who broadsided McIntosh's 2003 Toyota Corolla at the intersection of Boswell Road and Route 1, causing Perry to be thrown from her car.

Officer Perry was charged with reckless driving, as she was not using her siren as she responded to a call, but was found not guilty.

McIntosh's death resulted in the so-called "Ashley's Law", which states that emergency vehicles must have both warning lights and sirens operating or be forced to yield at red lights, which was signed into law by Governor Bob McDonnell on July 26, 2011.
