On November 1, 1965, 46-year-old John Kirk was shot to death by his ex-wife, 46-year-old Katherine, at her home in the Mount Vernon Trailer Park in Alexandria following an argument.

Mrs. Kirk had borrowed the .22 caliber rifle she used to kill her ex-husband from a friend earlier in the day, saying that she wanted it to "go hunting".
