On February 15, 2010, 37-year-old Nathan N. "Dirk" Smiler was shot to death by his girlfriend, 31-year-old Caralee Cottle, in the basement of his rented house at 8317 Little River Turnpike in Annandale.

Smiler and Cottle had previously been arguing when she found a text message from another woman on Smiler's phone, then retired to their basement bedroom, where she shot him to settle the matter.
