It's very easy, just time consuming, and playing Internet Whack-A-Mole with spambots is truly fucking tedious.

With the return of Fairfax Underground and following the latest exorcism of He Who Shall Not Be Named (Because It'll Provoke Another Shit Fit), Fairfax Forums has pretty much become redundant. I don't doubt that the forum owner is now spending all his time here, rather than maintaining his own forum.

So it seems like the lesson here is, "If you build it, it will be resoundingly ignored and overun by spambots."

Exactly.

OK I got a question for Chuck Hoffmann or any other propeller-head here.

Why have I never seen a single spam-bot on FFXU? We all know Cary doesn't moderate individual posts. The registration process is easy (does it even require you to fill out a spam filter?).
And unregistered posting is allowed. This site is indexed constantly by Google spiders and to top things off, the spam filter takes the form of five typed-out letter (as opposed to the kind where the letters are side ways and appears hand written).

All these factors would make FFXU a prime target to be overrun by spam-bots yet I've never seen one.

When spam does get posted, Cary is pretty aggressive about removing it and banning the user. There is also a built in spam filter...

Still I would think spam-bots exist that could bypass the spam filter on FFXU. I mean the "CAPTCHA" image is even in the source code as HTML text with the string 'captcha_image' right next to spam filter code! Surely a smart programer could program a bot to view the source code, and key in on something like this, right?

Obviously Cary has done something to prevent this site from being overrun with spam-bots but I feel like the spam filter that unregistered users have to fill out before posting wouldn't be enough. Some CAPTCHA images are hard as hell to fill out for a human (try to read some of the stuff on the bottom right!).

Still, I'm really not a computer guy so what the hell do I know?

Since he works at a hosting company, he has access to a large list of blacklisted IPs. If you try accessing fairfaxunderground from a proxy there is a good chance the IP range has already been banned. Hence why you can't even post here from a smart phone since most of the IPs are blocked as well.

Most spambots don't use a real Web browser, and instead spoof their browser IDs. Since they don't use a browser, they also don't use a Javascript virtual machine, which is what the captcha relies on to do its validation. No Javascript means the spambot can't submit a valid HTTP POST request, and gets an error. I suspect Cary's logs for this site are full of tens of thousands of errors generated by failed spambot traffic.

If you want to see this in action for yourself, disable Javascript in your browser and try and post anonymously.

Here's an example of the message Phorum throws up if you try to post anonymously with Javascript turned off.

I have noticed that I have never been able to post here from any proxy (although I haven't spent much time looking) even though I can access the site and even login through one.

Regarding smart phones. I have a Droid and I have posted to FFXU with it from all over the area (DC, MD & VA). I think iPhones got banned because of a specific user. Are you using an iPhone per chance?

This is just based on some half-remembered posts I read some time back, but I believe that being unable to use free Web proxies is mostly thanks to the Poster Otherwise Known as Eli, who was using them to circumvent various IP blocks Cary put in place to stop him from posting here.

The iPhone block was because of the Artist Formerly Known as Inkahootz, who was using a computer tethered to an iPhone to similarly circumvent IP blocks.

Since both have simply found other ways to post on Fairfax Underground, we can see how effective those measures were.

Hey there Jen...Yep Yep..The fun never stops around here!

Hadn't visited this site in some time since it had been overrun with spambots.

Went back there today and noticed that the owner had replaced the forum software with Phorum some time in early October.

It's still overrun with spambots, but the change means that there's literally no other content besides that produced by our little mechanical friends over there now, since all the real messages that were posted were lost in the switch.

I hope Scott is doing okay, I'm glad he and his group of followers stopped posting over here though.
