The M1911 Colt .45

The Colt .45 M1911 is making a big comeback, now that the U.S. Marines have placed a $22.5 million order for the Connecticut-made pistols.

It’s been called the greatest handgun ever made, and it has barely changed sine 1911, when the legendary John Browning designed it especially for the U.S. Military.

And now, the Colt .45 M1911 is making a big comeback, now that the U.S. Marines have placed a $22.5 million order for the Connecticut-made pistols.

The gun, which has been wielded on film by John Wayne and in real life by Sgt. Alvin York and Maj. Audie Murphy, was the standard-issue sidearm in the military for decades, until it was replaced by the Beretta M9 in 1985.

"It just became an iconic part of military and American history."

- Gerry Dinkel, CEO and president of Colt Defense

"It just became an iconic part of military and American history," Gerry Dinkel, CEO and president of Colt Defense, told FoxNews.com.

The gun, one of the most successful pistols ever used at Camp Perry's National Matches, a competition known to be the main world event in artillery sports, has barely changed since it's creation. Dinkel says that shows the gun's "elegant design" just can't be improved on. And firearms experts agree.

"You can’t beat a .45 cartridge," Jack Lewis, firearms director for Cowan's Auctions, told FoxNews.com. "Some things are hard to replace," he said.

Colt Defense, based in Hartford, Conn., will supply as many as 12,000 of the 200,000 U.S. Marines with semi-automatic, tan-colored M45 Close Quarter Battle Pistols, and they will include spare parts and logistical support. The gun has long been the weapon of choice for special operations agents, thanks to its reliability and the stopping power of its massive bullets.

"I'm really glad that they're keeping it in the American economy," Lewis, who used the gun while he was in the armed forces, said. "I was quite upset when they went to the Beretta," Lewis said.

Some reports suggest Marines are not happy with their main Beretta M9s for their lack of accuracy and stopping power. With M1911's now supplying Special Ops, growing interest may lead to a better solution.

"To have the 1911 selected again for U. S. Forces 101 years after its initial introduction is just an incredible testament to the timeless design and effectiveness of the Colt 1911," Dinkel said. "This is truly a gratifying contract award."

dika-dika is back.

That is a real gun all you Beretta and Glock (Combat tuperware/EESH's gun). That rail looks sweet and I can't wait to get one. 1911s are great for combat and Berettas/Glocks are good for the movies.

That dumbass Navy, Army and Air Force better follow suit

The .45 meets requirements in the middle. Less magazine capacity than a 9mm but a hit is one hell of a hit. I am not saying a 9mm wont do the job just saying a .45 can really punch a whole in the target.

Problem is all the dumb jar heads who have the colective IQ of 14 trying to keep the 1911 action clean. They should have purchased the Dumb ass proof glock for the morons. There is a reason why they are only issuing 12k. As they say. If you cant do. join.

Yes that could be an issue. A Glock may be the better choice. When it comes to firearms trust the Germans, yeah I know Austria but same difference. I have seen some Glocks take a real beating and fire like the first day out of the box. A reliable gun no one can deny that.

Colt 1911s can take a beating, they only being doing it 101 years and has been reliable for 101 years. They are still around.

Not saying the Colt cant keep up but the point I think Westboro is making is the ease of cleaning Colt vs Glock. Just a guess on my part.

For myself I choose Glock, never had any issues, easy to get mags. Never had to do any kind of repair. The only issue I ever see is dummies who get the Glock and forget the breakdown procedure. They remove the mag then to take the slide off you have to pull the trigger. They forget about the remaining round in the chamber and BANG.
Easy enough to practice safety by racking the slide several times and inspecting the chamber but it happens over and over.

Dont confuse populartity with reliablity. My favorite is the 1911 but from the dummy proof aspect the glock is the way to go period. BTW 1911 can't take a glock beating period end of story.

Also the USMC is not buying high end kimbers with all the bells and whistles for the dips behind the trigger. This purchase will cost lives ( if it ends up in combat) and $$$ for the taxpayers in maintenace. Dika look how many moving parts are in a 1911 and one in a glock, conect the dots and figure it out. Not trying to bash you theory behind the 1911 but look at the bigger pic ;)

Colt 1911 has six major parts to break down without tools. Why would you get a kimber with more and requires some tool/key to unlock it?

Try more like 40 parts for it to function properly. Kimbers do not require a key to unlock it. Not sure where you got that info but it is not correct.

You kinda ruined any sort of expertise you obviously dont have with that one. Watch your tube video one more time and look at all the parts boy genius. lol

I'm not a gun freak. Never shot a bottle or piece of paper. But the 1911 and I have spent some time together and became close friends. Saved my life more times than I can or want to remember. Weird, but we still share the same bed. Have fun with that bit of intimate information.
Anyway,what's my point. Yeah,now I remenber
Glocks are good dependable weapons in this plastic, throwaway society and everybody carries em but they just do not have character. I prefer old, well travelled companions who have been thru hell and back.
Only fucking marines would purchase a babybrown shit 1911.
Looks like a pistol that pimps carry.

Hello dika-dika. Since we talked last, I traded in my Glock 17 for a Beretta PX4 Storm, and I briefly owned a Kimber Pro Carry II.

I don't like 1911s. It takes about 500 rounds to break them in, and then you have to replace the recoil spring every 800 rounds. The single action only got old really quick, I don't know how people stand to carry them around locked and cocked.

As far as the talk concerning the US military adopting Glocks, they will never procure a pistol that has no external safeties.

All guns have a safety built in, its called keep your finger off the trigger until ready to fire. I dont like safetys since I started with a 38 revolver.

HI EESH

I remember you did get a kimber, did you ever lose that Kimber tool like Wesboro did? I'm impressed with your move to the Beretta PX4 Storm still a lot plastic on that gun. I'm going to get me the Ruger 1911 but Ruger has a backlog line around the corner on that gun.

Good point on the safety, Westboro wouldn't know that beside anything else.

Here is an Italian joke. How many gears do an Italian tanks has? Four, one forward and three in reverse.

Thought about getting a colt but tried two of them at the range and decided against it. Glock is like coke and colt is like diet RC. Colt folks are clueless about quality.
I own a .45 but my 9mm is my daily driver you cant beat the 9 for accuracy and glock is the only real choice of people in the know.

My Brother in Christ. What is happening with you? I got me this anonymous idiot named Westbro kissing up my ass. I guess he one of the brothers, he don't know shit and he not smart like you. He probably a brother with a Glock and dangerous. I'll give him time and he will probably shoot his own dumb ass.

Fuck the 1911.

Why the fuck would you want to limit yourself to 8 rounds and pay like $1,500 for one that works reliably out of the box? And by reliable, that's only in regular shooting range conditions. Good luck making one that works reliably in mud, swamp goo, etc. You know, the kinds of conditions soldiers have to fight in...

Not to mention they've heavy as a fucking brick. And that matters when you're a soldier because you're already hauling around tons of shit. Why weigh yourself down with a heavy pistol?

On a sidenote, the Beretta M9 also needs to go for much of the same reasons: too heavy and not reliable enough in mud and swamp goo.

In combat, what you want is a hail of bullets.

The idea that you can simply train to deliver accurate kill shots "so who cares about magazine capacity?" is retarded.

Sure, training to hit vital organs is very important. But the idea that you can train to the level of reliably 1 or 2 shotting someone with your 1911 is a complete myth.

Any combat training worth a damn teaches you to keep shooting until the enemy is down. And so for that type of realistic and effective combat, more rounds is better. Period.

So, if you want a .45 auto (and I would if I was soldier who wasn't allowed to use hollow points), then I'd at least go with a modern .45 that weighs less and has literally DOUBLE the capacity.

The FN .45 would be my preferred battle pistol. If you want to go with the tactical version, whatever. It has a whopping 15 rounds, weighs less than the 1911 and is more reliable.

On a sidenote, I'd also want to be issued the FN SCAR in .308 if I was a soldier. The M4 is just too weak. The SCAR barely weighs more than a 5.56 rifle, has almost the same recoil as the 5.56 (which is amazing), is more reliable and obviously hits a lot harder. My FN SCAR 17S is my favorite gun that I own. It should be our new standard issue military rifle.

My main man Yucky,
Didn't know you was a man with combat experience. Damn boy,you knows your weapons.
This ole boy does have a little experince with a remington 1911 and we was trained for shot placement due to one minor detail. Bullets for the 2 guns I had to carry, couple of grenades, plus extra rounds for the 30 cal got might heavy. And we didn't wear no cargo pants.
Didn't turn no cameras off to reload. 2 bullets per kill.
One to killum the second to make sure.
Pussy and a 1911. What more could a brother ask for.

I don't need combat experience to know that the FNP .45 and FN SCAR (especially in .308) is vastly superior to the Beretta M9 and Colt M4.

Besides, I could have made it into a special operations unit no problem. I have a high IQ and I'm boderline pro-athlete physically fit. The only thing that stopped me from doing so is my overprotective libtard parents who threatened to cut me off from my inheritance if I joined the military.

PS. Act like a gay person and kill yourself.

The tool is only need to disassemble the Officer sized 1911s because they use a short recoil guide rod. That tool is not used to field strip a standard sized 1911.

Why thank you my brother in christ. That Westboro isn't god fearing like you and I. Only love in christ can lift you out the ghetto and change a once dog hating racist like I use to be. You save me. Let me share this with you.

1. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

AMEN

Bullshit.

Glocks are the most overrated gun the world has ever seen. They suck from distance period.

Im also not going to buy that you know more about guns than special forces do you have been using 1911s all along.

It may cost a bit more but if youve ever seen the piece of shit berettas they have now its well worth the investment.

I decided to wait until I could walk into a gun shop and buy

with all the fuss over gun control spiking sales through the roof
(again) it looks like it's going to be quite a while thanks to

That Glock 21 is mighty sexy. I used to have a Kimber and it was a real PITA to take apart and clean and reassemble. Plus, it would scratch very easily. Not cool for a $1000 pistol.

Yo Pootawn.
A Glock is, well a Glock
Cheryl Tiegs is sexy
Kimbers are a rich wasp toy
and
M1911 is American Perfection.
Just ask Hippie or any of the vets that served and used sidearms

Yea eesh, you absolutely right
Real nice pretty guns with price tags.
imitation is the best flattery but I just never had the time for pretty things (except women). 1911s are tools that let you live to see another day are some bullshit like that. Just look at the names you listed. Sounds kinda waspy to me.

Obviously you don't know Marines. Although your comments are insulting, the mis-information is the worst part. Marines are the best in all of military service in keeping weapons clean & ready for combat! We used the 1911 .45 for many decades without problems due to dirty weapons. Believe me, the USMC chose the weapon they felt was the most suited for their needs. If you have any doubt........sign up and do a tour of service. If you think you can hang!

It was the greatest pistol ever made until a certain Austrian company basically reinvented the pistol in 1982.

Disagree, the Glock has some advantages, but I'd take 7 .45 ACP rounds over 15 9 mm rounds any day of the week.

There's a story from a GSG 9 guy in Somalia, and he said something along the lines of "I shot him 8 times with my 9 mm, and he kept coming."

Stupid. They should have went with the FNX-45 Tactical if they were looking for a .45 pistol:

http://www.fnhusa.com/l/products/commercial/handguns/fnx-series/fnx-45-tactical/

Twice as many rounds, more reliable, more durable, cheaper, easier to customize, etc.

The FNX45 tactical was made for dumb fat wannabes to show off to his online video buddies. Doesn't have any pratical application except for display. Cute gun but who wants to carry a designer pistol around? Definetly a compensation piece.

And no, the FNX-45 Tactical is not a "mall ninja" pistol. I own the standard version. Never had a single failure to fire. The older version had a problem with its magazine causing it to have failures to feed certain brands of ammo. That problem has since been fixed.

I've shot every single mass produced .45 auto on the planet. The FNX-45 Tactical is the best overall. The H&K USP in .45 and Glock 21 for example have a slightly higher quality feel. But I'd have zero doubts in my mind if I was a soldier issued the FNX-45 to serve as my combat pistol.

Personally, If I was sent to war, I'd want a Glock 19. If I was facing a real opponent (unlike pisslamic jihadists) like the Chinese equipped with body armor, then I'd probably want the FN Five-seveN.

What are your thoughts on the Smith & Wesson M&P45?

I personally am a fan of 9mm and I love the glock 19.

An Army range instructor once told me that one of the reasons they kept it so long was because they made so many of them during WW-I and the expense of replacement would have been enormous. It was. Too bad the Generals and Congress didn't listen to the troops.

I believe that, it does make a lot of sense. Also think of how many were made for WWII as well.

I read an article that said they're looking to replace the beretta in the next few years.

Looks like that contract mentioned by the OP is going to get the Marine Corps about 30,000 .45s, perhaps it is a large scale test into a possible replacement for the beretta.

I don't really care for the M&P line of polymer pistols. Not to say that their bad guns. They're very ergonomic and reliable. I just can't see why I'd ever choose one over a Glock which has a proven track record as being the most reliable polymer pistols in the world.

The only exception to that is the M&P Shield which is a good concealed carry gun. But if Glock ever came out with a subcompact single stack polymer pistol with a slide less than 1-inch thick (why they haven't done this yet blows my mind), I don't see why I'd ever buy a polymer M&P pistol.

These 1911s are only for special forces in the Marines.

You are to much a chicken-shit and pussy to serve in the military much less go to war. Put your designer pistols in your designer hand bag and stick a black dildo up you ass. You are just so yucky.

Read your article, said four thousand ordered. That's well short of the 235,000 active and reserve Marines.

Audie Murphy, was the standard-issue sidearm in the military for decades, until it was replaced by the Beretta M9 in 1985.

------------------------
no it wasn't. was Colt, still is Colt.

you'd beleive anything and fucking foreigner told you wouldn't you? some towel walk up to you and says "yea india beat america in the last war you are under our rule" you'd put a towel on your head ?

Colt is Made in USA , Beretta is italian

i love italy but not that much

-------------------------
So when have these been to Aberdeen proving ground ?

It's just as R. Lee Ermey said. Colt is reliable cost effective powerful and Made in USA. It's simple (no around the corner bullshit) and works well in the field because it is simple and suggested by all top marine range masters.

--------------------------
fucking Colt went out of business in 1985 when italy became USAs top gun contracts

SHUT THE FUCK UP
