Fairfax Underground
Welcome to Fairfax Underground, a project site designed to improve communication among residents of Fairfax County, VA. Feel free to post anything Northern Virginia residents would find interesting.
When I was first told I had a slight astigmatism, I was encouraged to buy expensive glasses to correct that and the farsightedness that I initially went in there for. Several expensive pairs of reading glasses later, I was told by an optometrist that it wasn't worth spending the money on expensive glasses to correct the astigmatism. I took his advice and have been buying $20 pairs of reading glasses at Giant ever since. I don't notice the difference.
Well, the eye doctor runs a business. The business is maintained by selling products along with eye exams. The eye exams are quite cheap so they got to make money somewhere.
I was cautioned by a friend that they would give me a perscription regardless of whether I truly needed glasses or not.
edit: thx ^ i will look into cheap glasses

People's eyes change all the time so its not surprising that you have found that your eyes have changed slightly. If your eyesight bothers you when reading or you get headaches after reading, then yeah sure, get some glasses.
When you get into your 40s, chances are you'll need reading glasses. So if you don't feel that you need glasses now, enjoy living without them if you can.
I don't have problems seeing, but I do get headaches from being at the computer for extended periods of time, then my eyes feel tired and sore too. Doesn't bother me too much because it's usually around bed time when I start getting a headache.
So, while your flow chart was cute, it kind of misses the premise of getting glasses.

That doesn't mean you need glasses. It's common for people to get dry, sore eyes and headaches if they spend too long at the computer. Especially if you're already tired. The headaches could also be from your posture.
I'm not a doctor, but if your vision is effectively 20/20, I don't think you need glasses. In your position, I certainly wouldn't buy an expensive pair if you're not even certain they're going to fix anything.
