There's really no evidence to suggest that large numbers of Hebrew people were kept as slaves in Egypt. The Egyptians kept good records too, even about stuff as trivial as seasonal rainfall, crop output, etc. You'd think they would have noted things like massive plagues and a large exodus of slaves, but they didn't. It's safe to say that the Book of Exodus is simply ancient mythology, just like most of the stories in the old and new testaments.

Biblical Scholar...isn't that an oxymoron? Must be a pretty busy and lonely occupation disproving just about everything in it.

They kept records of the Nile's flood stages, but hey, somebody forgot to make a note about the time when some angry god killed a few thousand children.

The plagues were due to climate change. Much like some kooky evangelicals attributed Katrina to the wrath of God, the Israelites did the same thing. Seeing as how climate change has become just another religion, it is really no surprise.

Actually, the flood story is prevalent throughout the Mideast and a lot of Asia.

My favorite explanation for the flood myth is that this might be what happened when the waters of the Aegean flooded through the Bosporus into the Black Sea.

Some question how catastrophic this event was in that it might have not happened suddenly but over a matter of centuries, but it would be a serious devastation for those who lived by the sea and their villages were inundated, never to be seen again.
