Non-Native Beetle in Fairfax?
Posted by: 2concerned ()
Date: July 22, 2012 11:37AM

I've been in this area most of my life, and I've never seen anything remotely like this - at least, not this large.

Can anyone identify it? And, is it native around here? If so, I'd like to release it quickly.

The photo isn't great... it sports some pretty complex colors that vary between green and brown -- the spots are black.

Thanks!

I think it's a female rhinoceros beetle. The females don't have the "horns".

Forgot to add that rhinoceros beetles are native to Virginia. No foreign invasion, there.

It looks like it is a Rhinoceros -- I was getting nowhere online.

Releasing it now. Thanks!

Eesh is so desperate for attention that he's trying to steal the spotlight from a bug?

Sorry dude - the insect has you beat, hands down.

I'm doing fine, thanks. And no, I'm not on medication.

You probably shouldn't expect to see me around here a lot. Really, when I first came, I thought there were enough "real" people to maybe help me to help a kid. Now that I understand the "community" a bit better, I'm hard-pressed to see a point.

My offer for a beer still stands, though -- at this point, a few of you disgust me, but I've got nothing "against" anyone. Trolls will be trolls. Still, I suspect that a LOT of you are actually decent people when the "anonymity" is dropped. Even the nastiest among you seem to have a lot of reasonable - if unconventional - opinions.

Regards,
Scott

Maybe it's one of the new FCPD Surveillance Beetles I was reading about in The Patch.

That is a female Hercules beetle. Nice specimen too, the females only grow to about 2.5 inches long. Definitely native to the eastern half of va. One of the biggest of the Coleoptera you can find around here.

Fuck you and your whole genus eastern hercules beetle. Take that black locustbranch and stick it up your abdomen. I hope your ovipositor gets stuck in a tree trunk and you are devoured by a praying mantis or a small bird.

Mite?!, mite?!, you don't know what you are talking about. I have six legs not eight you fat cow. I hope a parasitic wasp eats YOUR ass. God knows an abdomen as large as yours could feed an army of larvae. Your abdomen is so big, when you are sitting around a cherry tree, you are truly sitting around it.

Someone has anger management problems. Hope you skip the batman premiers. Stay home in your log and rent a movie instead - like that one made about you. What was that called?? Oh yeah, Precious.

Good one, Scott!

But seriously, you're smart and funny and it would be good to see you around here more often.

"and funny"...

Thanks! This is the case when my sense of humor isn't reinterpreted as insanity, maybe :-)

"it would be good to see you around here more often"...

We'll see about that. I'm actually getting together with a site member tonight. (Yeah, there's a couple of people here besides "Lizzie" and myself who actually exist in the real world, it seems!)

And no, it's not about "outing" anyone, or any of that. The truth is: I'm curious, but I no longer care. Nobody "official" has been willing to tell me what they were responding to the morning of the 24th, so it really doesn't even matter if I "prove" it was Gordon. Really, the legal actions from here forward are about the people who actually DID things, and not who instigated them, or why.

BTW, I agree about the bug's resemblance to Ringo!

I went back over some photos online and compared the Rhinoceros and Hercules beetles... Honestly, I'm still not sure, but I appreciate both of the suggestions.

I might dig for some more photos tomorrow, and try to figure it out.

Maybe it is him... I won't know until tonight, I guess.

I know Patrick has been described to me as the "most dangerous person on FFXU", which leaves me curious to see what the fuss is about. So far, it seems that "Papa Smurf" could come in here and achieve that title in short order. And yes, I saw the blog with the non-specific accusations.

I'm taking all of that with a grain of salt -- it seems that most of these "outings" are actually old friends who are just having spats with each other.

Hehehe... write what you want, but the fact that you're doing it as an anonymous coward really says it all, doesn't it?

Patrick is a pretty good guy.

But, don't let me, a REAL PERSON, spoil your delusions.

Best Wishes,
Scott

Yes, "for real".

He had empathy, no apparent agenda, and he went out of his way to make the connection.

I can't vouch for him as a "long time friend", but I can say that even before tonight, he separated himself from most of the population here by "being real" in PMs, even if I didn't know that it was him at first.

Honestly, no, I don't have a single negative thing to say about him - quite the opposite, in fact.

Travelling in a fried-out combie
On a hippie trail, head full of zombie
I met a strange lady, she made me nervous
She took me in and gave me breakfast
And she said,

"Do you come from a land down under?
Where women glow and men plunder?
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover."

Buying bread from a man in Brussels
He was six foot four and full of muscle
I said, "Do you speak-a my language?"
He just smiled and gave me a vegemite sandwich
And he said,

"I come from a land down under
Where beer does flow and men chunder
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover." (Yeahhh!)

Dying in a den in Bombay
With a slack jaw, and nothin' much to say
I said to the man, "Are you trying to tempt me
Because I come from the land of plenty?"
And he said,

"Oh, you come from a land down under? (oh yeah yeah)
Where women glow and men plunder?
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder? (ooohh)
You better run, you better take cover."

We are..

Livin' in a land down under,
Where women glow and men plunder, (yeahhhhhhhhhh)
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder? (thunderrrrr!)
You better run, you better take cover.

Livin' in a land down under,
Where women glow and men plunder,
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder? (oooo yeahhhh!)
Then I run, and then I take cover. (yea)

We are...

Livin' in a land down under, (underrrr)
Where women glow and men plunder,
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder? (oooo da da laa yeahhh!)
Then I run, then I take cover.
