A Question About This Forum...
Posted by: Effin' Noob ()
Date: July 08, 2012 10:26PM

Ok, so...if I do a search on this forum for a topic and find one already in play albeit with the last post dated 3 months ago and then add my own remarks...I get ripped for dredging up an old thread.

If I start a new thread on the same subject though, I get ripped for starting a duplicate thread.

What's the etiquette here?

How dare you ask what the etiquette here is when there is a FAQ AND a sticky post at the top of the forum!

What the fuck is wrong with you?

Welcome.

There is only one person here that froths at the mouth when it comes to duplicate threads; one of his screen names is "justsayin."

He starts each day by examining newly created threads, and then searches for similar threads dating all the way back to 2005. He will then berate you for starting a redundant thread.

Yup...there sure is, isn't there? Neither of which address my question though...

This is an unmoderated forum.

I believe that addresses any and all questions about etiquette. The readers of this forum wouldn't know etiquette if Emily Post herself hit them over the head with a baseball bat.

It depends which old thread you drudge up.

If it's a good thread, no one has a problem. If it's an old troll thread, then you're most likely a troll.

That's part of the charm. If it was easy, then anybody could do it.

Pretty much what Numbers said. To extrapolate, though:

A) If it's a legitimate discussion about something, I don't think anyone cares if you bump an old thread. The people that do care are just being assholes and you can ignore them.

B) If you bump a thread that was about current events five years ago, you'll generally be mocked for not looking at the timestamps. For example:

OP, 2007: "I'm going to this event in DC, it should be a lot of fun."

You, 2012: "What event are you talking about? I checked the website and can't find any info on it."

Everyone else, 2012: "lol dumbass."

C) If you bump an obnoxious or obvious troll thread, nobody likes that. Expect ridicule.

D) If someone makes a thread about something current (celebrity death, government outrage, etc.) and you create a thread about the same topic shortly thereafter, expect ridicule. The only exception is if the first topic had an unclear subject line and yours is straightforward.

E) If someone makes a thread about something and you come along a couple months later and post another thread about it and act like nobody's heard this already, expect ridicule.

F) We're a bunch of assholes. That, my friend, is the most important thing to remember, cause we will take you down to Chinatown.

Duplicate threads are a pain in the ass to read when they pop up, and they degrade whatever research value this site has. Glad someone cares. At least just saying doesn't post gay porn 24/7 here like eesh does. I always think "eesh" is short for "gay man with leash on neck" whenever I see his posts.

Ok, I'm getting it now...so, if I bump an old thread or dupe a thread and get flamed I can be a flaming asshole right back because there's no moderation and no rules or etiquette. Cool...this is just like at work! ;)
