Tipping
Date: July 06, 2012 01:37PM

How did this come about, and why is it growing like a fucking virus? Everybody has a fucking tip jar now. Am I supposed to tip someone who gave me a scoop of ice cream 20%? And when the hell did 20% become the norm? When I was a kid, it was 10%. Did customer service become twice as good over that time? I would argue that it's actually gotten worse.

I ask you, what's the deal with tipping?

HA. You ever been in one of the public bathrooms over there where you tip the attendant? I always left a Euro, those bathrooms are sparkling clean.

Those were great- when I was in Spain the attendant even sold cigarettes! Wish they had more of those here. Nothing beats a euro to keep the bums out-

I saw a few places in Canada like this. Even Baltimore.

For restaurants and bars, I start at 15% and adjust it up and down as appropriate.

For places like Starbucks and Cold Stone? Fuck that. The attitude and attentiveness of the staff at those places has no impact on how much you enjoy your visit or their product. They're not going to check and see if your coffee needs refreshed or if you need another napkin because that one ultra-thin scrap of 1/2 ply doesn't keep you from getting ice cream all over your hands.

If you fail to perform your basic job function you should be fired, not go home only earning min wage for that day.

Not only are they demanding tips for performing their basic job function but the minimum wage is higher then ever before.

I tip almost everyone 20% because the math is easy and I am just a good guy that way.

But if you are a shitty server, I'll give you close to nothing. And by shitty server I mean you don't keep the glasses full or you make me crane my neck looking for you when I need something.

I have a strong dislike for the takeout places who use the receipts with the tip option. If I go to some carryout for a stromboli and I order at the counter, pick it up at the counter and pay at the counter all while standing- NO TIP.

Everyone wants to be tipped. What the fuck? Here's who I tip:

Food Delivery
Barber
Restaraunt Wait Staff
Casino Drink Ladies
Chambermaids

Starbucks? Cold Stone? LOL. Fuck that. What's next, McDonald's?

Tipping is different than throwing a couple of bones at the mailman or garbage man at the end of the year.

I hate the mentality of these chain restaurants that use the bartender or hostess to place and give takeout orders. They expect a tip for going into the kitchen and grabbing your bagged food. WTF

Do you leave a Christmas gift for the mailman? I never have, because my route has several different mailmen, any one of them could pick up the tip and not share it with the others.

Waiters in Europe kept paid a real wage, they don't depend on tips like over here.

A lot of people just round up the bill and leave that as a small tip.

Blessed are the murderous.

I give the mailman a bottle of Remy.

I give our lifeguards a watermelon, a bag of Doritos and a 12 pack. And they are probably over 18 but under 21, they seem to dig it every year.

I give my garbageman Red Bull about twice a month.

Cash tips are nice, but people really seem to remember more tangible items.

No it is not because they are white and Russian, but if they were of any kind of African orgin I would be a horrible and insensitive man deserving of scorn and ridicule for sharing with them a refreshing and cool locally grown treat like a watermelon.

Shame on me.

Because my girl drinks it by the case and I have a surplus. Plus I think it puts a little pep in his step.

And the mailman is black, gave him the choice between Remy and Absolut a few years ago.

For about 8 years we had the same mailman and he was a nice dude. Had a kid with cystic fibrosis. I used to give him $50 each year. Then I guess he retired or quit, because we've had what seems like 20 different ones in the last 5 years. I don't know them and don't give them anything and my mail service hasn't suffered.

I will tip above 20% if the service is really top notch and wont hesitate to tip nothing if things arent up to snuff. Restaurants and haircuts only though. I dont tip for anything else.

I always have different mail people. The last two years the lifeguards have been guys.

I usually tip about 20%. I also usually try to make it so the tip makes the total be an even number if paying with a card. That's just a weird thing I always seem to do.

No unfortunately they've been some Ovechkin looking thugs the past few years, but they've been good about keeping the pool quiet.

The chicks never got tips, just English lessons and a little sweat.

I generally follow that rule, but will modify the percentage for good or bad service.

I do not tip at Starbucks, but I do tip at my favorite coffee shop.

It's a state brought about by small business owners that don't want to succeed.

They allow it so they wont have to give raises and guarantee decent wages.

I own a business where the employees should actually be tipped (and they are, one on one, customer directly to the employee responsible for the service...not shared by the whole shift at the end of the day).

I don't allow tip jars. I pay my people too damn much as it is according to nationwide standards.
