Americans certainly have a lot to be proud of in terms of some of the things they have contributed to human race. But as an immigrant with a very strong sense of culture and tradition I can't stop thinking that America doesn't have as long history or culture as the rest of the world. I have lived in Europe for little bit and Europeans are not very polite to immigrants coming to their country. They are very hostile people, and would tell you that immigrants are destroying their culture and they want them gone. In Europe White Americans are seen as some sort of Bastard children, and very uncultured. And thats due to them not having very strong culture or tradition. My question to my American friends is, how do you view yourselves?

My bloodline comes from all over Europe, watered down through the ages as the world becomes a smaller place. To pick any one culture would be to deny all the others. American culture is very rich and influenced by the people who immigrated here to find a better place to live. To be an American is to be free and proud of who you are and where you come from. Being white should have nothing to do with it...if you start getting into White Culture, Black culture, Yellow culture, Brown Culture...people start crying racism. Even though each definately have different beliefs, tastes, ways of living...so on so forth..just my thoughts as I head out the door for lunch..

That's because the "dumb American tourist" stereotype is unfortunately largely true. Go to Paris or Rome, and I can guarantee you'll see at least one fatass with a southern accent pointing at some structure and saying "inn't that just graaaayyyt?" White Americans have certain things that could be considered unique to themselves, hence cultural traits. We generally like baseball, we are optimistic, we are clever and dumb at the same time, we don't have a specific cultural dance that everybody knows, we speak one language and are proud of it, we're fat and blame others for our shortcomings or misfortunes, we steal land from other people and make up clever excuses (Indian territory, Hawaii, other nations, etc.), we like alcohol, we don't like alcoholics,we appreciate humor like "America's Funniest Home Videos" and "Jackass". We're all rich and claim to have no money, we are all secretly racist to some extent behind closed doors and in the privacy of our homes, We don't want bums, junkies, or vagrants around us. We claim to have "gone green" by changing a lightbulb.

You hit the nail on the head. Bluegrass for me. These third world punks
bad mouth us at every opportunity at the UN but expect us to bail them

In most european countries I wouldn't be mad or offended if they told me to go back to my country because its rightfully their land and could trace it back 500yrs or more. They have culture that they can trace it back as far as possible. But in the other hand, I would be very offended if an American told me to return to my country. First of all, unlike Europeans who are in their rightful land, Americans cannot say this is their country because they are immigrants themselves. Now if native Indian told me to get the hell out of their country, I would not be offended. Anyways I am not comparing Europeans to Americans, because Americans are far more tolerant in accepting other cultures and people. But its true about what I said how White Americans are viewed in most of Europe.

You compared the way Americans view their culture to the way you view European culture.

So how do you view "American" culture? A lot of the people who replied to the post have given me a different perspective in looking culture, and especially American culture. I understand America being a young country how the culture is made up of all these different immigrant groups. Which also means there is no national identity compared to once again say Europe. This is good in some way because as an immigrant I could keep my culture and not have to be forced to integrate. Now this would sound double standard to you guys, but I would not want anything like this in my country. But then again, my cultural roots go way longer than America has been a country.

Dude, the history of Europe is one culture invading and influencing the other constantly for thousands and thousands of years, How many times did England get invaded? Ever heard of the roman empire?
