+1000. I'm not sure if it was all of the failed festivals in the immediate wake of Woodstock but, the memory of Summer Jam 1973 at Watkins Glen is fading. Amongst music jihadists though, it is still often referred to as one of the greatest concerts in the history of popular music. Allegedly, 600,000 people came to that festival.

The other 2 concerts I would add are:

June 10, 1988 RFK Stadium "The Monsters of Rock" Kingdom Come, Scorpions, Dokken, Metallica and Van Halen.

May 25, 26, 28 and 30, 1977 Capital Centre (Landover, MD) Led Zeppelin...and I caught all 4 shows!

This. I skipped school for that show and it was worth the parental lockdown for the rest of the month. Looking back now, Kingdome Come does NOT belong on that bill. They're basically a Led Zepplin tribute band.

GNR/Metallica/Faith No More at RFK was another good one.

Rush's Time Machine 2010 show at JLL was memorable because it was, hands down, the LOUDEST concert I've been to. EVER.

lol, that's pretty funny they were considered a "monster of rock". They had one friggin song that was a minor hit. I saw a Zeppelin cover band back in the mid 90s, they did a good job covering all the Zep favorites, and they also played "Get it On" by Kingdom Come. I couldn't figure out if they were joking.

Not sure what my "bestest" concert is, but a Guided By Voices show at the Black Cat back in 2001 sorta stands out. My ears were ringing so bad the next day I thought I might have to see a doctor.

Interesting...that was the first tour I missed of theirs since "Signals" and I saw them a few years before "Time Machine" on the "Snakes and Arrows" tour, same venue. It was loud, but not the loudest I've heard. Definitely full and dynamic, that's for sure.

The loudest concert I went to was Iron Maiden on their "World Slavery" tour to support "Powerslave". The date was January 28, 1985 at Capital Centre. IIRC, the wattage was in excess of 100,000 which I believe was a record which has likely been eclipsed. But it was so loud. Dickinson is indeed the Saxon Klaxon to be heard over that.

I'll be there too. Bringing my daughter so she can see some real rock n roll and not some Hot Chelle Rae, LMFAO bullshit. She's totally excited and since she plays bass (admittedly on and off), she should have a lot of inspriation with Maiden this Saturday and Rush in September.

I haven't heard that it's a farewell tour. It's a rehash of their 1988 Maiden England tour, so expect a lot of Seventh Son of a Seventh Son and earlier (i owned that concert video on VHS). They're only in their 50's and I would fully expect a greatest hits tour, because Seventh Son is one of their weakest albums. Unlike Powerslave or Piece of Mind, it sounds dated.

Also - Ralph Poontawn mentioned Sevendust earlier. They put on a good fucking show.

I was there too. The most memorable day of my life.

REM/10,00 Maniacs at the Patriot Center. Stipe came out and sang on the Campfire Song during the maniacs set. Natalie came out on the encore and joined in on a acoustic/electric version of "The one I love" that was beautiful and frightening at the same time. God I wish I had a recording of that. Spin Magazine reps were at the show and the next issue declared REM Americas Greatest Band.

Debbie Harry, Jerry Harrison and Casual Gods, Tom Tom Club and the Ramones at Merriweather Post. Great show and the loudest show I have ever been to. Ear bleeding loud.

10,000 Maniacs/Billy Bragg/ at the 930 club. Michael Stipe sang with the Maniacs and Ziggy Marley joined Billy and the Maniacs for Get up Stands Up at the end.

Duran Duran at the Warner Theater - played there twice, 25 years apart. Both great shows.

Agreed. If your daughter's an aspiring bass player Steve Harris from Iron Maiden and Gary Weinrib of Rush are two of the best. Throw her some Jaco Pastorius (Frets? I don't need frets...they're just speedbumps.) and also some Stanley Clarke.

"7th Son" represented a real departure for Iron Maiden. I think commercially there was a lot of pressure on them to remain relevant and become more mainstream and the addition of synth to their sound was a huge mistake, IMHO. Fortunately, it was a mistake they were able to recover from but one that other bands could not.

Adrian Smith was on VH1's "That Metal Show" last week and they were discussing this very subject. They actually played a clip of Dickinson right around the time of "Powerslave" where he was quoted as saying, "You really can't make heavy metal music with synthesizers..." So, although Bruce is one man in a 6-piece band, I think it was clear the use of synths was not the band's choice as was evidenced by the fact that they used them less and less after "7th Son". Smith was still chagrined at Dickinson's quote all these years later. Eddie Trunk quickly came to the band's defense and said Maiden has gone on to release 8 more studio albums since then and it's been clear for the past 10 years that they still have a loyal WORLDWIDE fan base who will buy their records in droves. They even released their first acoustic song a few albums back.

It's hard to believe they've been doing their thing for over 30 years now and despite "7th Son's" synth departure and several lineup changes, they've remained uncompromised in their approach. Even harder to believe is RUSH's now 40+ year run.

There just isn't much music being made today that will still be heard with the same passion. A band like Rush or Steely Dan would never get a WHIFF of a recording contract in today's image first music scene.

UP THE IRONS! :)

I've been to a gizzilion rock shows, but the one that sticks in my mind as the most fun was Bill Bruford at the Barns in Wolf Trap back in the early 90s.

The room is so small that we were all standing right next to the band and basically was like a basement party. The guys in the band were having a great time as well and were laughing and smiling the whole time. They were improvising a lot, but they were tight as shit.

I remember being really motivated to go home and start playing and learning more about music in general. I think everyone there felt that way.

Saw Pink Floyd in 87 at the Cap Center in the winter and then again in the summer of 88 when they swung back around and played RFK. Was a great show.

Also saw Public Image Ltd. at the Werner before they closed it down for remodel/restoration. The Beastie Boys opened and were roundly booed for their entire set. This was right as they were becoming known for "License to Ill" which was just released.

Saw Paul McCartney and it was OK. Saw him at RFK in the way back seats, but it was free.

Have seen Tangerine Dream twice, once at the Kennedy Center Concert Hall for the Optical Race tour in 88 and then a couple years later for Rockoon tour at the Lisner. Thinking about going to the show at the Howard on the 8th.

Saw Rush last summer and want to go again. Great concert. Going to Maiden this weekend as well. Not really excited to see Alic Cooper though.

I remember reading that back in the day. I saw The Who at the Vet in Philly in 1989, had front row seats, right in front of Pete Townshend, loud as fuck and totally worth it. My ears must've rang for days after that.

Best concert I've seen would probably have to be one of the Rush shows I've been to. I don't know how they do it but that band always does the engineering just right, best-sounding live rock band. And one of the few bands who can take an album I don't really like and make me like it by playing it in front of me.

Metal, I'd have to say Dio in the 80s, with the original lineup of Ronnie James, Vivian Campbell, Jimmy Bain, and Vinnie Appice. Saw them in the Spectrum in Philly and the stage show was crazy, robotic dragons with lasers shooting out of their mouths and shit, and RJD had the most powerful singing voice ever.

wow, it's really bizarre coming accross this site and thread because my dad has told me and my sister that he saw led zeppelin at one of their first shows in america and it was at a small building not even set up for concerts-we never thought much of it because we aren't that big of fans-it was just some old band to us with a couple good songs but he was always very proud of the fact-we were like whatever-and now this thread hits a little closer to home because my dad grew up over in wheaton-i've only driven through there with him while he would point out places and how they used to be a lot different-very boring-he lives in florida now but i'm gonna ask him more questions about it
