New at DMV: Veterans ID Card

Just show your DD214 at DMV and pay $10, and you will get a non-expiring veterans ID.

On behalf of the Department of Veteran Services (DVS), the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) now issues identification cards to veterans for proof of veteran status to receive discounts from retailers and restaurants.

Blessed are the murderous.

AWESOME.

Does this let you get on bases, too?

It's not a DOD issued ID, so probably not.

True, but it's a government ID that requires DoD paperwork...

If I get a chance, I'll try to make some calls and report back.

I used to get on base with a (non-DOD) federal government ID. But key words there being "used to." It's been a while. And this being state-issued, chances are probably less.

A variety of IDs will get you onto most installations, but to use base privileges you need a DOD ID.

Blessed are the murderous.

This is the most useful thread I have ever seen started by eesh. Okay, Im partial to the 'hot or nots' too.

I just called Ft. Myer...

The MPs said that it will let you get on-base.

The commissary said that it wouldn't be valid for commissary priviledges. That's unfortunate. I'm not sure how new this DMV program is, so maybe that will change. Also, the commissary is run by civilians so maybe they just don't know about it yet.

The commissary is run by a DOD level agency, not AAFES or garrison. It will take a long time for them to approve any new privilege from a new form of ID.

I don't think soldiers/airmen that simply ETS will ever have base privileges, you have to have some sort of retirement.

This is the most useful thread posted to FFU in a while regardless of the OP.
And everybody is partial to the 'hot or not' threads...they're the FFU guilty pleasure.

The card is in very poor taste. A true American who has served will never ask for any discounts or favors because of their service. It is a personal honor and privilege to have served this great country, not the other way around.

"used to" is right. The agency I retired from had a crackdown after
9/11 and the building is now closed to anyone but employees and
official visitors with prior authorization. All guests must be signed
in by an employee and accompanied at all times. As a retiree I'm no
exception. If I want to visit the Credit Union I still have to be
signed in and accompanied although if I don't know someone personally
who is willing to do it, a security officer will accompany me but I
have to make arrangements at least 24 hours in advance. Sad considering
I spent 30 years working in that building and felt like it was my
home away from home. It's a different world out there now.
