Why cant these annoying FCPS whipper snappers just graduate high school in their school's football field like everyone else did back in the day?

The Patriot Center was built for sports and concerts.

It was not built for bullshit high school graduations.

Why must everything be so pussified now days?

Throw your caps up in the air and then go out and get a fucking job like the rest of us had to.

Two reasons that I can think of:

1. Now you have 800+ kids per class and you can't possibly fit everyone and their families in the bleachers or inside.

2. In 1989 there were massive severe thunderstorms the afternoon of graduation. At Madison HS, they moved the ceremony inside to the gym and then the power went out. Half of the kids didn't get to walk at all. At Marshall, they had to move the ceremony inside and the place was too crammed and families were out in the hallways. The whole afternoon was a disaster.

3. Turf Fields are expensive. You do not want to tear that Shite up.

Back in what day? I graduated in 1996 at the Patriot Center. Are you old farts talking about the 80s? The class of 96 had over 1000 students. We couldn't fit on Hayfields field.

I sat in traffic for 20 mins trying to get past MAson this afternoon... Then I went to the store for a burger and a pint... forget it. The place was overrun by the privileged lil brats and their brood.

So exactly when would "back in the day" be?

In the early 1970s there were a couple of schools that were already using Constitution Hall for graduations, and there were a couple of others that were using Wolf Trap. Of course the Patriot Center hadn't been built then.

As far as I am concerned 1996 is not back in the day. 1996 was like yesterday to me.

We had about 1,500 in mine and we all fit fine in our field which being older with crappy old wooden bleachers also probably was smaller.

Life is tough and can be unpredictable at times. They might as well learn this valuable lesson while they are still in high school rather than later in life.

Reschedule it for the next day. OUTSIDE.

Yup, this was the case at LBSS for class of '89 graduation as well. We were scheduled for the football field and had to move inside to the gym due to weather. There was no limit on football field seats but, there was a limit of only 2 per graduate for the gym. There were fistfights in the area outside the gym between parents; some of whom had family that had flown in from Guatemala and many other brown savage homelands. As a concession, they hard wired television service in about 10 minutes from the gym to the theatre so the overflow could watch there, too. There still wasn't enough room. There's nothing like seeing Julio Sanchez graduating only to find out Uncle Ramon and Aunt Conquistadora had to be lead away by the I.N.S. back to Dulles.

Exactly. I guarantee you there were plenty of FCPS high school graduations held outside with over 1,000+ students. Being outside grants you all the space you will ever need and then some. You cant get more space than that. The sun, the sky and the clouds all fit outside perfectly just fine with plenty of room to spare. There is no reason why 1000+ FCPS high school graduates and their families cant fit outside too.

Well good. Bye bye. Dont come back. Although you and I both know eventually they will.

At the store?!? Wrong town. The only thing illegal at the store is perhaps the building's wiring.

I'm an old fart and I don't have a problem with graduations at Mason. What is the issue?

A bunch of overprivileged people who have to drive through the area where Braddock and 123 meet are being inconvenienced for 3-4 days a year because of graduation traffic.

You motherfuckers want to be just like the 1980s?
Well then go fucking graduate in your fucking football field.
Keep your asses and your shit off of Braddock Rd.

I graduated from Woodson in the '60's. That long enough ago? We used the football field, and it was fine. No worry about a limited number of tickets, etc. I forget the exact number in the graduating class, but it was around 800.

I'm not bothered by the traffic backups at Mason. There are enough alternative ways to get around the area (Roberts over to Zion or 236, for instance). It's just that graduation loses something when it's not at the school you attended.

My son spent 7 years at Robinson (should have been 6, of course, but he was ill for the better part of a year and lost some credits); he (and I and his mom) knew the school like the back of our hand. He'd spent half his education life there. It would have made sense to graduate from there, rather than Mason.

And if you're outside and it rains, bring an umbrella or some plastic to cover yourself with. That's part of the experience.
