VA is not a "stand your ground" state. It's more of a "back against the wall" state. My understanding is that you must first attempt to escape or otherwise remove yourself from the situation. If you're unable to get away and believe (as a reasonable person would believe) that you are in immediate danger of grave injury or death, then you can shoot your assailant and claim self-defense.
