Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death..

It was fun posting the DCRTV post on their board, even though there were only 2 non active posters at the time.

Harry,
Yes, exactly! It came back with Carla telling ghost stories on the sun porch to Mike's kids and it just didn't fit. Then I realized I heard the bit about the stripping game to "what car is coming down the road" before.... and ended up wondering was this just live??

Did they pull him off the air? Maybe he had had one too many drinks when he came in? That would give management the excuse they need to drop him.

Wasn't paying attention to the beginning, or any of it really. No podcasts is unusual though.

The compelling part is the idea that he was live and suddenly a taped episode was on the air. WTF would be up with that? Especially since there was no announcement (like, you know, letting the listeners and trade outlets know that the live show had to be cut off because of a personal emergency).

Catching the Big O and Dukes podcasts while I work (delayed from air by about half an hour)...and it really sounds different today. We've got "Testy" Dukes and "Phoning It In More than Usual" Santana.

No direct (or indirect) references to a shakeup so far, but this difference in tone (and a tweet from Dukes earlier saying "The countdown has begun...") might lend some credence to the Dukes/Arrington rumor.

In a market like DC, the trend is toward young, clueless guys who are willing to make shit for a living in exchange for what passes for "fame" in a local media market. I have a feeling that Mike will be doing Morning Ag Reports in Roanoke before all is said and done.

Someone finally got the memo. Too bad for Mike he didn't get his ratings up before this. I think his show sucks, but I think a lot of shows in the Top 10 suck. Too bad - for him - that he didn't put any effort into it until it was too late. Kind of like everything in Mike's life. He ignores it until it goes to shit (marriages, restaurants) then he scrambles at the last minute to save it, but it is too late. You would think he would have learned by now, but I guess not.

DCRTV-

Goodbye Mike? - 7/2 - Will today be the swan song for Mike O'Meara (right) on guy talker WJFK? There are rumors-a-plenty that the CBS station is flipping to sports talk on Monday, 7/20. And, we're hearing that afternooner O'Meara was due to take a two-week vacation. And, with tomorrow, Friday, being the official federal July 4th "day off" since the 4th falls on a Saturday, might today be the last day live for O'Meara on JFK? Rumors have it that JFK's morning Junkies will survive the format flip, but no word about O'Meara, who was paired with Don Geronimo until April 2008, when Geronimo left the station. More soon.....

Think of it - 'ol MOM will have died and gone to Heaven!! In an AC format, he'll be able to play music/run ads for 48 minutes, then "entertain" plant soccer-Mom's for twelve minutes then take a rest.

The massive O'Meara talent deserves this gig - after carrying his afternoon zoo crew "on his shoulders" for harrowing 1.5 years!!

Good news - minimal Buzz and Rob(baye) and zero Beth Ann will be available in the twelve-minute gab-fest each hour.

Thank God XM/Siri won't simulcast 94.7 - whatever in the Hell it's called!!

Two more weeks and the MOM show will be no more:

DCRTV hears that a number of local sports radio guys, including Tony Kornheiser's old producer at Bonneville's now-defunct Washington Post Radio/3WT, are heading to CBS's WJFK, which is rumored to be flipping to sports talk on 7/20.

We've heard these rumors before. But, unlike last time, Mike didn't go on the air and try to dispell them before going on vacation. And ever since the day of "the call," I haven't heard him say anything about his show not going away, even when he brags about being in 11th place.

I listened to the podcast and in the last part of the last segment, it sounds like he chokes up when signing off. Of course, he also sounded drunk, so he could have been throwing up a little.

Re: The Mike O'Meara Show

Somebody noted that Mike was off the show for a segment or two a few weeks back, and then came back "shaken" from a call. I listened to the segment. Rob(b) and Buzz were doing the segment. Mike walked in and said he had to take a call. Rob(b) asked if it was a good call and Mike said, "no." It happened around the time the Post started pushing the sports-flip rumors.

My personal take on it was that Mike called the suits in NY demanding an assurance that the flip wasn't happening and that the suits said they couldn't make any promises. If that was the case, Michael Hughes totally abdicated his responsibilities. But having worked around radio "management" when I was younger, that sounds about right. Most of these guys started out in sales department with a high school diploma and have no business being GMs or Program Directors.

I listened to a couple of segments this past week because of all of the rumors. Rob(b) was playing whole chunks of "Onion News Radio" for the audio vault. Also, they played, in full, a couple of the shitty parody songs they used to make fun of. Finally, they had another one of those horrid eating segments where you get to listen to Mike eating ravioli or something like that.

Basically, it was back to the level it was at prior to the last firing scare back in April. I guess Mike wanted to go out true to the shitty vision he had for the show in the first place.

Just listened to the last segment. I actually feel a little sorry for the guy. He was just out of his league from the beginning. I guess by showing up right before the old show started he never learned how to run a show. All these years, this is the best he could do? When the new show first started, I thought it was management telling him he had to tone it down from the old show. While that may or may not be the case, I think he was just relying on his name to get listeners and just phoning it in.

Yes, I also think he was drunk that last segment. Big surprise. I thought he was drunk at the beginning of another show earlier in the week too (maybe Monday).

Edit: Oops. Forgot they were mysteriously off Monday so I guess that would be Tuesday.

Buzz Burbank - Travel guide for the Thai sex trade.

Beth Ann - Lowe's Flooring Department's newest sales associate.

Rob(b) - Is dumpster diving considered a "profession?"

Joe - Live organ donor for a Chinese billionaire.

This gives you an idea of why Don and Mike are different. If Don knew he wasn't coming back, do you really think he would have played ball with management and just gone quietly into the night on his last show? Fuck no.

DGS 07.02.09 Thanks R.JJ Hope you got the .03 &.04. Todays show should be good with the 1st holiday weekend update in a long time. Christ with 20 + family members at my place we sure had plenty of fire works. Does anyone else need to decompress after these long holiday weekends?

As much as I've hated the show in the last year or so, it's also a bit sad to see the old tank rumbling off the battlefield. I've always thought the proper analogy was jazz: Mike is a brilliant sideman. He can even get up an solo and cut the leader pretty bad. But in the end, it doesn't really matter: he can't front the group. You need a real Miles Davis, a Dave Brubeck to make the band a success.
And there was no one of that caliber there.

I say this as one who used to think Rob had some talent. But he is just such a dick to the listeners that he became unbearable. Donnie was a dick too but he made his dickishness bearable - maybe by leaving his whole damn life laid out on the stage of the show.

Bye Mike, Rob, Buzz, Beth Ann, etc. I'm not going to miss you after all.

If you want to hear an old pro well-working his mojo, listen to the 6-30 DGS between 20 mins and... oh, about minute 35. D tells a story about going to the movies to see "The Proposal" with his wife. It is some of the funniest story-telling I've ever heard.

Immediately afterwards, an elderly guy calls in to say he wants to tell a movie theater story that happened to him "70 years ago." D completely disorients the dude by not responding verbally but instead playing short non-sequitur sound bites from the "Family Guy" every time the caller pauses. I was howling.

So then turn the channel.
That's what is so sweet about living in America, you have the right to change the channel. Everyone wants something to bitch about. Turn the station, or can you? No, because you all need something to complain about. Some people just aren't happy until they have something to bag on.

Speaking of bags, mesa thinks Robb needs a GIANT bag to hide his rotten teeth. Poor Robb, retarded kid, rotten mouth, and now a townhouse payment at 40. Mesa hopes robb gets dental insurance soon.

BWHAHAHA!! Why would anyone want to discuss "talk show philosophy" with Chris Kinard?!?!?

That idiot couldn't produce or direct programming that even scratched the top ten in 12+ week long ratings.

"Talk show philosophy?" No wonder their ratings suck! Here's the only "philosophy" you need to work on a talk show...book a fucking guest someone has heard of.

From DCRTV...

The latest WJFK sports flip rumors we're hearing: The CBS station could flip from guy talk as soon as this Friday or Saturday, and not the 7/20 date that we've heard.

No shit. It's the worst-kept "secret" in radio history.

The Junkies would be doing mornings. Chad Dukes would be paired with former Redskins Lavar Arrington for afternoons. The Washington Post's Mike Wise had been mentioned in middays, but that's not a certainty.

The Junkies still suck.

Current afternooner Mike O'Meara and his crew are out. The show's in reruns this week, but he may have taped a "farewell message" that could air on the show's last day,

What a fucking pussy to go along with this charade.

We're also hearing rumors about a big shake-up in management of CBS Radio's DC cluster, with at least one major exec walking the plank.

Do you think someone in New York finally got the memo that Michael Hughes is a major fuck up?

And we're hearing more talk about a major format tweak at urban WPGC, possibly the installation of CBS's Amp/Now contemporary hit format, now airing in LA and NYC. Currently, none of CBS's four major DC area FMers are anywhere near the top 10 in the radio ratings.....

How many stations does CBS operate in this market? And NONE are in the Top 10...the biggest radio company in the country, correct? And NONE of its stations are in the Top 10. Hughes and CK should be shown the door.

So badly they couldn't draw better ratings than drunk O'Meara in the end. And they get a pass!! Amazing...Well, I guess not with idiots like Kinard and Hughes at the helm.

But CK "produces" the Junkies so he probably see the scary radio talents the Junks are far better than we ever will!

It might just be time for Hughes to hit the road, but I'm sure he's trying to pin the tail on CK or anyone else to save his sorry ass as the final hours appraoch.

CK's only saving grace is that he's probably making slightly more than the $32K they were paying Rob(baye).

Right up to the bitter end. No backbone, no fight in him. Probably couldn't wait to cash the check.

In the end, that's all O'Meara did cash a check by playing it safe, trying to be a Jack Diamond PM drive time zoo, without music. Playing tunes could have saved his ass because he wouldn't have killed his audience with the z-list "celebrities". Buzz and Rob(baye) would have had (deservedly) minimal mike time.

If the news is correct, I think we should all give Mike O' a standing ovation for stepping up and trying to keep us entertained after Don's departure. He and Buzz and Robay at least tried to fill the void where Don was, so for that I think we owe him at least a *little* bit of gratitude. He's been trying to keep the D&M legacy on life support, but it looks like it's time to unplug the lines, and turn off the equipment.

Mike, I know you read these forums, Rob as well, not sure about Buzz, but guys, thank you. You gave it your best, and I thank you. You didn't have to do it but you did, but you did, but you did.... and I thank you.

Three cheers.

Uh Java Dave- Didn't you notice Mike never did really try and that's why this thread has been so popular.

If he had put just a little effort into the show then he might have kept us entertained. Instead we got him eating/drinking, terrible interviews and the goddamn power-of-five game day after day for over one year.

Kinda feel bad for Mike. I've listened to him for years and he seems like a genuinely good guy. Buzz and Rob can go pound sand though. These two have shown how much annoying they really are with the extra air time.

Keeping it on life support by doing the exact opposite of what Don did for 25 years? By copying the same stale bits and radio hockum Don used to lampoon every day? By selling out by letting management ride his ass into cancellation? Mike proved to be the anti-thesis of everyone Don has been about.
