Expellled, the Movie
Posted by: FUNdamental ()

During one of the Republican debates, a person asked John McCain if he believed in Evolution. Senator McCain said "yes." The moderator then asked who on the stage didn't believe in Evolution and three hands went up-Tancrado, Huckabee, and Brownback.

Now, Ben Stein is about to release a movie that touts "Intelligent Design" as an alternative explanation to Darwinism. Though ID is never clearly defined, and no scientific evidence presented for ID is given, Darwin scientists are skewered and Darwinism is linked to Hitler's gas chambers, abortion, and atheism (the fact that Pope John Paul II stated that "evolution was more than just a hypothesis' and that evolution is compatible with Christian faith" apparently is not mentioned).

Junk science in this film is at best "junk." Intelligent Design and there is no climate change problem, are just two of the nonsense debate points many in the Republican party are presenting to the American people. On the issue of "Intelligent Design," the producers of this movie want to brainwash the American people into thinking scientific community demands "Darwinism" is the only way to go, and you will be persecuted if you deviate from that point. The truth of the matter is quite different from the movie's flawed premise. Darwinist don't mind Darwinism being questioned or put through scientific scrutiny. It is all part of the process. However, Darwinist do not take kindly to those that question their scientific studies by presenting a "one off, once in a billion, and cannot be repeated " explanation for the world; this debate premise is not part of the scientific process, and it never should be.

After all, if God's design and will was to kill off many Black people with sickle cell anemia, then their is no reason for us to look for a cure. Ben Stein has gone too far here, and history will look at him in this stage of his life not as a comedian but as a 21st century kook. That is evolution for you.

This is disappointing. I think Ben Stein is a smart guy, but Intelligent Design simply doesn't hold water when subjected to scientific rigor. The whole premise of ID seems to be based on creating reasonable doubt, not in providing an actual scientific theory that can compete with Evolution. As far as providing reasonable doubt, ID fails miserably. The entire ID argument is that if we haven't figured what caused a gap in the evolutionary chain, it must be due to divine intervention, not because we simply haven't discovered the reason for that gap yet.

Wow, these conservative "intelligent design" morons must be DESPERATE for attention if they've adopted that Nixon-sympathizing, marginally third-rate comedian as their spokesperson.

Ben Stein? Give me a fucking break. This guy's credibility is based on a minor role in Ferris Buehler, and a cable-TV game show that isn't on anymore.

It's embarrassing enough that folks in this country elect people like Sam Brownback and Mike Huckabee into office. And now they got "Ben Stein" up on the media soapbox??

I bet the Taliban even puts more careful thought into these types of decisions.

Jesus Christ. CNBC had a talk show hosted by John McEnroe. Any fucking idiot can get on that channel!

As for Stein, he is a smart guy, but he is a lawyer. He is not a scientist. He blames evolution for the Holocaust (survival of the fittest, etc). Of course, the fuckhead ignores generations of genocide against Jews and other ethnic groups that happened in the centuries BEFORE evolution was theorized. He and the other ID crackpots have no business dismissing evolution if they are incapable of coming up with a competing theory that makes sense besides "if I can't be explained, God musta dunnit!"

The trailor for this movie is misleading in many ways (there is a link here: http://www.expelledthemovie.com/playground.php )

In particular, the rejection of an editor by the scientific community because he acted outside the norms of scientific practice is a GOOD thing. Otherwise science would be a field full of charlatans. One of the things that has made science so powerful in developing our cars, computers, medicine, the houses we live in, the microwaves we cook food in, and the chairs which stop us falling to the floor when we sit down is the concept of peer review. It works. Period. It’s not victimization - it’s the scientific method. And this is not a free speech issue - people can say whatever they like, they just can’t call it good science when it’s not. Otherwise the kid in the classroom who says that rain is god’s tears could call himself a scientist, and we’d have to give him the same credibility as Ernest Rutherford.

ID proponents believe both sides of the issue should be presented - or as the movie suggests - let the science teacher decide. States rights and elimination of the Federal government and all.

It it is truth, that kids in Florida were drinking bleach before sex to prevent STDs. Florida teaches abstinence only. So you see what happens when you let kids decide based upon flimsy political based information?

The producers of the film will donate money to your school - public or parochial - $5 for every ticket sold. They encourage schools to bus kids to see this movie and make it an event! They are doing this in hopes that Expelled will beat the box office of two other notable documentary.

And the advertising/PR group for the film Expelled... The same ones that brought you advertising for The Passion of the Christ, Chronicles of Narnia and Swift Boat Veterans for Truth.

Again, from the anti-evolution people, a flawed premise. What he calls the "top of the banana, is actually the bottom of the banana since the stem of the banana is at the bottom and bananas grow "upwards".

Most people eat bananas the way they were taught to and the way this guy shows you - which is WRONG . For the proper way to eat a banana, we need to check with the experts who have been doing it for far longer and more often then people.

Funny how God gave man the banana (so easy to eat and all). Does the Bible even mention the banana? No? What does it mention? Bread and fish. Yeah, I find loaves of bread hanging off of the tree every damn day. As for fish, they are so easy to catch. Not like man needed to invent the spear, hook or net to get them or anything.

So, you are to use the stem as a handle for the banana? Fascinating! We have been doing it upside down forever?

Agreed. Ben Stein is telling Glenn Beck how smart he is. Has Stein ever actually listened to one of Glenn Beck's shows? The guy is a complete idiot. I'm not talking "complete idiot" like Anne Coulter who is, possibly, an intelligent woman who acts like an idiot to get attention and sell books. I'm talking about a guy with an IQ of 73 who should be working at Goodwill Industries. How this guy ever got his own show, I will never understand.

As we approach the April 18th or whatever opening weekend for Expelled, it will be fun to watch what shows Ben Stein goes on to plug the movie.. He will appear where he feels the interviewer will be friendly to his cause and the audience is not that bright.

Here is my prediction where he will or not appear

Letterman - No
Leno - More likely Yes than No
Fox News Channel - Every 1/2 hour he will be on
CNN - Maybe Wolf Blitzer if questions are given in advance, and Larry King definitely.
Ellen - No
The View - Possibly, and if BarbaRA Walter is off - he will show up whether he is invited or not.
Charlie Rose - Wont go fucking near it.
Nightline - Most likely not.
Today Show - Yes, but only if Kathy Lee Gifford does the interview.
Regis - Yes but only if Regis gets him before Kathy Lee.
Tyra Banks - Probably not - but I would want to see that for the humor factor alone.
60 Minutes - Hell No!
Dateline - Not Hell No, but definitely No.

While I respect you point, I must say that there is no Gap in the evolutionary chain - or to be more precise - when ever a new discovery is made - it fits in the evolutionary chain EXACTLY where it is supposed to be.

There are "gaps," mainly from the standpoint that there are certain times during the course of the evolutionary trail where the variety and number of species explodes at a rate above the trendline. That said, it doesn't discount that natural selection is behind these surges. But evolutionary biologists, at this time, don't have a clear explaining of why these surges occurred. That's where the ID crowd jumps in and says "God did it." Of course, why the hell would God periodically jump in a "do it" and not just "do it" from the start for everything?

The reviews are in despite the fact that critics screenings were almost non-existent. I am going this afternoon. I cant wait.

From the New York Times:

Mixing physical apples and metaphysical oranges at every turn “Expelled” is an unprincipled propaganda piece that insults believers and nonbelievers alike. In its fudging, eliding and refusal to define terms, the movie proves that the only expulsion here is of reason itself.

Salt Lake Tribune:

While many right-wingers decried Michael Moore for playing fast-and-loose with the facts in his documentaries, apparently other conservatives said, "Hey, if he can do it, so can we."
And, lo, there appeared "Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed," a slick but intellectually dishonest documentary that mounts an argument for so-called "intelligent design."

Pioneer Press:

It is fatuous, for instance, to denounce Darwin based on the way Adolf Hitler misinterpreted his work, juvenile to use animation to make science look as stupid as possible and dangerously misguided to suggest that Planned Parenthood is a hellish bastion of eugenics. Even more pointless is a lengthy sequence in which Stein tut-tuts as he tours a facility where Nazis once imprisoned and murdered the handicapped. Sure, the images are horrifying, but they have nothing to do with the film's subject.

Roanoke Time:
The film would carry greater weight, however, if someone had explained those gaps. Even better, it would be nice if, at some point in the film, Stein had suspended his agenda for the few moments it would take to define intelligent design.

Fox12 Idaho
Nampa, Idaho -- Friday will mark one of Hollywood's biggest openings for a documentary film in the United States -- and Boise, Nampa and Meridian will be three of the 1,000 locations screening the movie.

In this film funnyman Ben Stein is examining one of the most widely debated topics -- Darwinism verse intelligent design. A far cry from his legendary characters of the "dry eye guy" and the monotone teacher in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off", Stein is wearing a different hat these days. He is the brains behind the new documentary film "Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed". It's two years worth of research dissecting the long debated Darwin verse intelligent design debate and suggests that there is more out there than what he calls the "Darwinian machine".

Christian Post
“Expelled” makes a strong case for challenging the existing academic status quo and demanding that the free exchange of ideas, so highly-valued in other areas of academic inquiry, be extended to the origins of life debate. Stein documents the close-minded treatment many scientists give these new evidences for design.

Baptist Press

Land: 'Expelled' a must-see movie
(do you think this line will be used in advertisements?)

National Review:
In the end, the film isn’t really about intelligent design as much as about a relentless attack on an authentically free inquiry. As Ben Stein points out, “Freedom of inquiry has been greatly compromised, and this is not only anti-American, it’s anti-science. It’s anti-the whole concept of learning.”

Crosswalk.com (How can I pray for you?)
Ben Stein’s new movie called Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed opens today in theaters across America. Because the movie dares to challenges the prevailing Darwinian orthodoxy that has a stranglehold on American education, it has already generated a great deal of discussion in the blogosphere. Predictably, the major newspapers and liberal critics don’t like it, which to me is a good reason to go and check it out for yourself. You don’t have to agree with everything you see in the movie. I don’t doubt its major premise–that scientists and academics who question (or even appear to question) evolutionary tenets risk losing their jobs and their chance at career advancement. That’s not exactly big news, given how completely the evolutionary mindset has captured the elites in our society. In the latter half of the movie (which I have not seen) Ben Stein demonstrates the necessary connection between a purely secular worldview and many of the social evils of our day. This will no doubt infuriate many of the critics but so be it. Ideas have consequences.

Baltimore Sun
Someday perhaps it will be possible to look back on Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed as a relic and reminder of the rhetorical logic employed during the era of George W. Bush. Until then, it should be seen simply as a tiresome ideological bludgeon, an attempt to deceive audiences into believing it is one thing when it is, in fact, quite another.

AND MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE (other than the praise endorsement by the Idaho Values Alliance report still on the front page of Fox 12 Boise at http://www.ktrv.com/ Even non believers should check it out because the news chick - while she cant read news - makes up for it by being cute) is the Discovery Institute - who hawks a book about the devil on the front page of their website:

This film is going to be a classic and there is nothing the fulminating opposition can do about it. (In recent days they even resorted to threatening lawsuits, just confirming their growing reputation for ill-liberal spite.)

There is no way that we, for our part, could have persuaded the evangelizing atheists in science--that is, the big guns of Darwinism--to let their true personalities appear in front of a camera so people actually could witness their furious, unreasoning contempt.

Expelled has done that. Hearing and seeing Richard Dawkins criticize the disingenuous and propagandistic approach of the National Center for Science Education (a part of the film the Darwinists simply do not want to acknowledge in public, let alone discuss) was worth it all for me. And that was before Dawkins went on to explain the space alien theory of life's origin that Carl Sagan, Francis Crick and many other Darwinians promote as their own creation story. (This theory is real science, right, Richard? Testable, falsifiable, based on evidence you have researched?)

Since the marketing company for the movie (again the same marketing group for The Passion of the Christ and the Chronicles of Narnia) were tasked by the financial backers (the same guys who bought you "Wwift Boat Veterans for Truth) to make Expelled opening weekend bigger than the opening weekend of "other documentaries", I look forward to the box office grosses released Sunday and Monday.

"Sunday?" you sau ask. Well, many times movie grosses for the weekend are released Sunday . Studios use complicated models to "guess" the box off reciepts that will be taken in Sunday based upon Friday and Saturday reciepts.

The "other documentaries", we can surmise, would be Farenhiet 911 and Bowling for Columbine. Here are the box off reciepts for opening weekend for those two films.

Fahrenheit 911
Opening Weekend: $23,920,637
(868 theaters, $27,558 average)
% of Total Gross: 20.1%
Widest Release: 2,011 theaters
Close Date: October 28, 2004
In Release: 114 days / 16.3 weeks

Bowling for Columbine
Opening Weekend: $209,148
(8 theaters, $26,143 average)
% of Total Gross: 1.0%
Widest Release: 248 theaters
Close Date: September 18, 2003
In Release: 343 days / 49 weeks

The numbers for Friday for Expelled were as follows; $1,126,000, Gross (Friday) 1,052 theatres, $1,070 per theatre.

However, in unrelated news, Ben has already signed up to narate their next documentary proving Jonah was actually swallowed by a whale.

Ben Stein compares Darwin to Hitler and then bitches that nobody takes ID seriously?

The ID arguments are not intellectually honest. That's why Stein et al have to resort to complaining that they are being attacked on freedom of speech. They are being attacked because they are trying to present religion as science and there is nothing to back up their arguments scientifically.

The one good thing that will come out of this is, hopefully, the end of Ben Stein's acting career. He is really doing a Kirk Cameron on himself with this one.

Here are some of Hitler's "Darwinian" thoughts...

"I believe today that my conduct is in accordance
with the will of the Almighty Creator."
[Adolph Hitler, _Mein Kampf_, pp. 46]

"This human world of ours would be inconceivable without
the practical existence of a religious belief."
[Adolph Hitler, _Mein Kampf_, pp.152]

"What we have to fight for...is the freedom and independence
of the fatherland, so that our people may be enabled to fulfill
the mission assigned to it by the Creator."
[Adolph Hitler, _Mein Kampf_, pp. 125]

"And the founder of Christianity made no secret indeed of his
estimation of the Jewish people. When He found it necessary,
He drove those enemies of the human race out of the Temple of God."
[Adolph Hitler, _Mein Kampf_, pp.174]

"It may be that today gold has become the exclusive ruler of life, but
the time will come when man will again bow down before a higher god."
[Adolph Hitler, "Mein Kampf" Vol. 2 Chapter 2]

"The greatness of Christianity did not lie in attempted negotiations for
compromise with any similar philosophical opinions in the ancient world, but
in its inexorable fanaticism in preaching and fighting for its own doctrine."
[Adolph Hitler, "Mein Kampf" Vol. 1 Chapter 12]

Ben Stein should be ashamed of himself.

We have a rule for my kids, no going to the movies unless it is raining (we encourage physical activities on weekends). So today, they got excited when they saw how wet is was outside. In accordance with the rule, we went to see Nim's Island, and right next door EXPELLED was playing. When our movie ended, I peeked inside EXPELLED, my sons at my side. The theatre was at best 30% full and there was a scene of marching Germans on the screen. Immediately, some old man sitting near the back, a Ben Stein look alike, gave me and my two boys a really mean stare just after we opened up the door. After he gave us the hairy eyeball, I started thinking, "WTF, old man! Do you really think you are getting some intellectual stimulation by seeing this piece of Garbage?" Me and my boys left.

The " 'Expelled' Challenge" urges schools and home-schooling groups to get students, parents and faculty to show up in force, promising donations of $5 to $10 per ticket stub for those who register.

Let's see. Figure average ticket price is $8. That means about 395,000 went to the show. If you give $5 back to half of those people, that means nearly $1 million. Not sure what it cost to produce, promote and distribute the movie, but it sounds like the marketing company is going to be out a lot of money for this piece of junk.

This guy has said it best

Intelligent design film far worse than stupid
Ben Stein's so-called documentary ‘Expelled’ isn't just bad, it's immoral

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24239755/

from his rant

The definition of what science is and what should be taught as science in a world in which Asia and Europe are itching to clean our economic clocks by seeing us throw away our considerable lead in synthetic biology, genomics, agriculture and the biomedical, oceanographic, geological and energy sciences escapes Stein and his producers. This despite the fact they have ample time to regale us with all the documentary stylings involving old movies, public health messages and TV film clips that Michael Moore has already made stale. The failure to say what science is constitutes a huge failing in this cinematic cant.

Let's cut to the chase and give everyone a ticket to the "Creation Museum" near Cincinnati.

Here is an example of upcoming "scientific" events...

"Rock Strata, Fossils, and the Flood" -Dr. Andrew Snelling speaks at the Creation Museum (how Noah's flood is responsible for rock strata)

"Astronomy and the Bible" -Mike Riddle speaks at the Creation Museum (how the solar system really isn't billions of years old)

"Formed to Fly" -Dr. David Menton speaks at the Creation Museum (how anatomy shows us that God formed birds on Day 5).

Ah, yes. I would much prefer this nonsense be taught in my kid's school than actual geology, astronomy or biology.

Intelligent Design versus Evolution. Why IDers can discount Evolution because nobody has come across a duck turning into an elephant, but Evolutionists aren't allowed to point out there is no scientific evidence that the world was created 7,000 years ago.

ummmm, about 6000 years ago actually if you read your bible in the last 1000 years or so you would know that.

A day is like a 1,000 years to God. It took 6 days to create the Earth and on the 7th he rested. Not, on the 7th day he IS resting. He did rest on the 7th day. That means 7 days have past. 7 x 1,000 = 7,000.

Of course, I think this is all B.S.

This movie is nothing more then a continuing effort by the Kristian right...and other conservatives to ignore science. Another example is sex education...or as would be better to say no-sex education.

Listen to this arrogant asswipe. He's not biased at all....

By the way, pal. A cow wouldn't evolve into a whale. You need to go back millions of years to a common ancestor, such as an amphibian. If you look at it from that perspective, the split into two considerably different species over the course of millions of years doesn't seem so odd.

What a fucking moron.

Well since the world is only about 6 (or 7 as some here would say) thoudand years old, if evolution were true, a duck could spontaneousely turn into an elephant or a cow into a whale - or Gravis for that matter.

Flipping the radio dial I came across Glen Beck. The caller was screaming abiyt the "theory or Evolution". "Ask any scientist", she said, "and they will tell you a theory is nothing more than an educated guess".

Glen Beck could not have agreed with her more. I could not fathom a host on Air America letting something like this go on. The hosts opn those programs constantly correct callers if the callers say something not true - even if the caller agrees with them.

Anyone on the right wing make a mistake they move on. A left winger makes a mistake, they move out.

That person is seriously confused with the term "theory", which has a different meaning in science than it does in common usage. In everyday language, theory means "educated guess." However, a scientific theory means a logical, provable, model that can predict future occurrences. In math and science, theory is synonymous with fact.

Any scientist would know that. They'd never say it was "an educated guess"- unless they were intentionally trying to create the ambiguity that arises from the misleading use of the word.

no, scientific theory is an idea that best describes results of a given system. for the most part they are repeatable but not always. you must understand that our theories are altered as we find flaws in the logic. additionally, theories are not always correct and can be proven incorrect but never be proven to be correct for there may be factors that we do not know of or have considered. an example is the two competing theories about gravity wells ("black holes"). we have theories about space time and some appear to be correct while some have been disproved though they are scientific theories none-the-less. i would best describe a theory as an logical extrapolation for an outcome from a quantitative or qualitative data set. that could be boiled down to "an educated guess," so while lacking linguistic precision, i agree with his statement.

An "educated guess" that has stood up to scrutiny for 150 years. There are lots of theories from around that time that haven't.

Looks like Expelled has crapped out at $4.5 million. Don't forget the producers are going to have to give about half of that back because of the $5-per-ticket finder's fee thing. What a bunch of idiots. I guess they thought volume would have made up the difference.

Anyway, I'm sure clips of this stupid thing will start showing up on YouTube so society can further skewer this ill-informed propaganda.

I recieved this email today. Looks like they will do anything to sell a ticket to this piece of crap...

Dear Friend,
Ben Stein's movie is now in danger of being “Expelled” from theaters

Despite:
A “Top 10” box office opening…
Standing ovations in theaters…
Scathing critics and raving fans…

Expelled is being sued by YOKO ONO – and she's demanding that it be booted from THEATERS NOW!

If you haven’t done so already, PLEASE SEE EXPELLED NOW; its future relies on you.

Check HERE to see where EXPELLED
is playing near you (1,000 screens nationwide)

Click HERE to hear a special message from Ben Stein

Despite harsh reviews from liberal critics, predictions of box
office failure and ridiculous lawsuits, EXPELLED has become
a FAN FAVORITE:

* #5 in per screen box office ($3,000 per screen)
* #9 overall, despite being on only half the screens of its competitors
* EXPELLED may become one of the top 10 box-office performing documentaries of all time.

"It opened as one of the most commercially successful releases for any documentary film," said the Christian Post.

BUT BEN STEIN NEEDS YOUR HELP…

Secular critics, atheist groups, and now the beloved Yoko Ono are black balling EXPELLED and trying to get it out of theaters.

Without strong support from leaders like you, EXPELLED could get tossed from the theaters.

PLEASE get out to SEE EXPELLED THIS WEEK. Ben is risking his career by taking on the world's leading atheists, and he can’t do it alone – he needs your support.

CLICK HERE to take a GROUP to see EXPELLED.

Please forward this email to friends and contacts!

We all know WorldNetDaily only deals with the truth...

WorldNetDaily Excerpts...

"Maybe McCain will try to fight back by confirming Hillary's well-known bisexuality and her lesbian affair with her beautiful assistant, Huma Abedin. Turns out Huma is a Muslim who grew up in Saudi Arabia and is strongly suspected of working for Saudi intelligence."

"The death of deputy White House counsel Vincent Foster – one of the most bizarre events of the Clinton years – was ruled a suicide by two independent counsels and considered a closed case by the mainstream media. Any suggestion that officials covered up the "murder" of Bill and Hillary Clinton's loyal aide and close friend has invited only scorn from lawmakers. Just a handful of media outlets have ever followed up on evidence and testimony from witnesses that contradict the conclusions of government investigators Robert Fiske and Kenneth Starr."

"The evidence strongly suggests that Ron Brown was, in fact, assassinated. In the most likely scenario, Croatian intelligence agents coerce the navigation chief into sabotaging the airport's non-directional radio beacon. After the plane crashes, they divert the rescue efforts, go to the crash site and administer a coup de grace to Brown, who may already be dead."

Whatever the gaps in Evolution, there are much bigger gaps in Creationism. For one, God created the laws of physics and then arbitrarily decides not to follow them? Or, if the world we live in is all part of some sort of deception by the devil that means reality itself is suspect, which should lead any rational person to question everything. For instance, since Jesus spoke against Jewish dogma, is he part of the devil's deception?
