Media scrubs Malia Obama vacation story from the web
Posted by: News Bug ()

By DYLAN BYERS | 3/20/12 12:24 AM EDT The AFP, the Huffington Post and other websites have scrubbed a report about first daughter Malia Obama's Spring Break vacation.

On Monday, the AFP reported that Obama's daughter was vacationing abroad, along with a number of friends and 25 Secret Service agents. The story was picked up by Yahoo, the Huffington Post, and the International Business Times, as well as UK publications like the Daily Mail and the Telegraph and other overseas publications like The Australian.

But on Monday night, the story had been removed from those sites .The AFP page for the story now links to a story titled "Senegal music star Youssou Ndour hits campaign trail," as does the Yahoo page. The Huffington Post page now links directly back to the Huffington Post homepage. The Daily Mail, Telegraph, and Australian stories now lead to 404 error pages, reading "page not found." The International Business Times story also links to the IBT homepage, though a version of the original story still exists here.

A spokesperson at the White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment, though given the late hour that can be forgiven. I will update here if and when I hear back from the White House, and if and when I hear back from spokespeople with the various websites and news agencies.

Publicizing a first daughter's activities increases the security risk. I applaud the media for its restraint and good judgment.

Allowing a spoiled snot nosed little girl to galavant around the world on my dime is most certainly newsworthy and demands attention. The USA has a debt to income ratio of like 97%. Sent the girl to the Smithsonian like every other kid her age.

Without getting into the decision to withdraw those particulars about her trip as a security measure (rather useless, IMHO, after the fact), the costs associated with her trips over and above the trip cost itself (paid for by her parents) are already there no matter where she travels.

> ...Send the girl to the Smithsonian like every other kid her age.

My same-aged daughter had the opportunity to go to Florida this year with her science buddies; that's where "every other kid" in this area goes, not the Smithsonian. Since she's at a school for the wealthy it wouldn't surprise me if her trip to Mexico was one of the cheaper ones that folks at her school are going to.

I should have added that it's not JUST her on this trip, but her and about 10 other students.

My kids are going to be lucky if we get a trip in to Ocean City this
summer but then, we're only peasants.

I am sure you applauded all the press accounts relating to the Bush daughters antics as well. Double standard much?

Cut them some slack. They're doing a public service. They want to show everyone it's safe to go to Mexico.

I applauded all the press accounts relating to the Bush daughters that showed that despite having grown up somewhat in the public eye and being daughters of a sitting U.S. president, the twins were not afraid to be "typical" kids of their age.

Yes, the media's intent on publishing those articles and photographs was to show the twins "typical" kids.

Malia is 13 years old and on a school-sponsored Spring Break Trip. Jenna & Barbara were 20 years old and already drunken co-eds when 'W' was inaugurated.

Apples & oranges, Dick.

Security risks end when first daughters turn 18? You shouldn't have gotten off your original point, dummy.

I would love to verify some of the things being said here, but I cant. this is bullshit because it has been pulled from every single webpage and I know for a fact that many of these 'news' outlets couldnt give a shit about Malias security over traffic. Shady shit. Your rights are being stripped from right in front of you.

I dont think this is a school sponsored trip and can guarantee you that Obama did not pay for the jet fuel nor the salaries of the secret service members that are with her.

Publishing a photo of Jenna flashing her cooter as she and Barbara stumble drunkenly from a bar does not create a security risk. Who's the dummy? That'd be you.

From the Daily Mail: "The teenage first daughter is on a school trip to historic Oaxaco, Mexico as a part of the 'experiential learning' program run by Sidwell Friends Academy."

No President ever pays for his or his family's Secret Service details.

So only 13 people from her school could afford this trip? I have just read a couple articles saying this is a pleasure trip. Regardless if it is a school trip or not; How the hell do you justify sending a prized target into such an unstable region amid travel warnings from OUR government.

OIh and in regards to paying for the detail... It sure as hell doesnt take 25 SS personnel to keep her secure the other 51 weeks of the year. Being the presidents daughter doesnt give you the right to travel the world on my dime.

It poses the exact same security risk that this instance does. The only difference here isyour weasel eyes are crying like a lil baby. Sorry, weezie, you've been made to play the fool, again.

More likely, just 13 chose this trip. Do you think that this one trip was these student’s only choice? And 'afford' it? Do you know whose children attend Sidwell Friends? Tuition there is more than Harvard.

I don’t know where you get you information, but this is from the State Dept. website:

Oaxaca, Mexico: No warning is in effect.

If you think the story of Malia is important reading you should read up on what Bo Obama has been doing.

I've heard several storys about Bo Obama have been secretly hidden from the press.

I dunno. The entire point is that they are concealing information about the trip. So its hard to find any source at all. I noticed that you conveniently omitted any supporting links,

No, it doesnt. It earns her the rights afforded every other citizen with extra protection. That does not mean that these resources should be wasted sending her to very dangerous places. Hell, give her a tour of SE DC.

As far as the salary goes, Im on salary too. But that doesnt mean my boss should send me to Mexico. There is plenty they could do stateside to enhance security here

Yes, yes it does.

You, yourself admit there is no heightened danger to travelers in that region. And one drunken picture in Austin was hardly the extent of the media's coverage of the Bush daughters. It's just the one you can't stop looking at.

Weezie, you aren't nearly as bright as you think you are, which is why you are forced to coopt and abandon names more than anyone else. The names you have abandoned on the trash heap of stupidity are too numerous to name.

AUSTIN, Texas — President Bush's 19-year-old twin daughters were charged Thursday with underage alcohol offenses after an incident in a popular restaurant known for its Tex-Mex food and ice-cold margaritas.

It was the second alcohol-related citation against Jenna Bush in less than five weeks. Police accused Jenna Bush of attempting to buy alcohol with false identification and Barbara Bush of being a minor in possession of alcohol.

Both charges are misdemeanors punishable by a fine of up to $500, attendance at an alcohol awareness course, community service and a 30-day suspension of a driver's license.

Dude, you’re kidding yourself if you believe that.

I, for one, simply do not care about what the 1st family does. I didn’t care or complain about Bush flying AF1 to Crawford every weekend, nor do I care where, when, or how President Obama or his family travel.

Ohh, travel for agents isn't free. Lodging and per diem isn't free. Agents have to travel prior to any trip and do a lot of prep work. None of that is free. And none of that is paid for unless someone is traveling. Sorry, but you fail.

Personally, I don't care about this kid traveling. But don't act like it's not costing the taxpayers tens, if not a few hundred of thousands of dollars. It does.

Of course the two are incomparable because Malia is a minor, while the Bush twins were of the majority on their father’s inauguration day. Still, you seem in need of a task, so why don’t go ahead and give me an example of when the media announced where & when Jenna and/or Barbara were traveling outside the US without the 1st family WHILE they were traveling.

Taking unearned liberties does not make it okay. Sometimes I take an hour and 15 minutes at lunch, my boss doesnt bitch, so I dont see the problem. This does not mean that I am entitled to 1:15 for lunch, merely that I am indeed doing it.

This is the exact type of nonchalance that gets us here in the first place. This trip will quite literally cost the US government more in cold hard US cash than you will contribute in taxes for a lifetime. Congrats! You just paid a lifetime of taxes so lil Malia could be given opportunities not given to the rest of us. Well done. Can I have a donation too?

Using the ‘find’ function (Ctrl F) in Explorer, search for ‘Oaxaca’ within the link you pasted above. Under ‘Southern States”, it says there are no warnings for Oaxaca.

Already addressed. Please keep up. Their age at the time is irrelevant. Security threats to the first family are always present no matter what the age.

Oh, ok, what color should they be wearing? Do you want the travel day to be on an odd or even day of the month? Weekend or weekday? Western himisphere? North or south of the equator? You are a tiresome little turd with all your conditions. I will take that as an implicit admission of your nonsensical point of view.

Only 53 percent of people pay federal taxes.

There is no need to warn about that specific location because as the very first and very clear statement says there is a travel warning for the entire country. If there were race riots going on in Northwest DC, I would likely keep my white ass out of Georgetown, just to be sure.

Why not? You value his life more than someone elses? He volunteered, begged, borrowed and stole to get in the position he is in. Ultimately, he is a public servant. Nothing more.

And daylight saving time actually makes the day an hour longer, right? No matter how you slice it; when you are still a wage slave at 70, 30% of your earnings for the past 4 decades wont have paid for her 'alternative learning'trip.

If it didn't matter, why would the State Dept. feature all of that detail about the individual states?

Of course! You can't be serious. If the President's safety isn't paramount, the Secret Service wouldn't exist.

I'm just trying to cheer you up, Pal. Nothing you do or say is going to change the President's behavior, so knock yourself out.

I didnt say value his saftey, I said his life. To include his family. Her going to mexico is about the opposite of protecting the life of the president.

Of course not. We are all serfs. I stand no more chance starting this revolution than a share cropper in the 13 century. The only difference is that nowadays, those in power pretend that they stand for liberty.

Oh, OK, please tell us about all your years providing security services to high value targets both domestically and internationally. If you knew a damn thing about providing security for high value targets, you would know that protection people the ages that the Bush twins were is much more challenging than the protection of a 13 year old.

Please regale of us all your stories and expertise related to high profile individual protection services.

I dont think Barry was aware he was busy with other stuff

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama is holding a private fundraiser with about 20 donors who each gave $35,800 to his re-election effort.

Obama is holding the event at the upscale W Hotel near the White House. The fundraiser is closed to the media.

Proceeds from Monday's fundraiser are split between Obama's re-election campaign and the Democratic Party.

Through the end of February, Obama has raised about $300 million for his re-election campaign and the Democratic National Committee during the current election cycle. He raised more than $4 million during events in Chicago and Atlanta last Friday.

For that matter, there are also plenty of trips of gov officials that are kept secret for many reason. Even some of Presidents Bush trips were kept secret for security reasons when he visited the troops for Thanksgiving.

Family members of dignitaries, both American and foreign, are protected by international law. Malia is an American dignitary as such.

About every two years there is some dignitary family member in DC that gets caught driving drunk and killing. But they walk away with no punishment.

The United States has the responsibility under international law to protect visiting foreign dignitaries and resident foreign diplomats in this country. There is an equally serious obligation to protect foreign missions in Washington, New York, and other cities in the United States. Unlike some other nations that use a single protective force, visiting foreign dignitaries/diplomats and foreign missions in the United States are protected by a wide variety of local, state, and federal organizations. In Washington, foreign missions are protected by the Uniformed Division of the Secret Service with support from the Metropolitan Police Department. The premises of foreign missions in New York and consulates in various cities are normally protected by the municipal police departments. Traveling foreign dignitaries are usually protected by the Secret Service or Department of State, and some defense officials may be protected by one of the services in the Department of Defense. Other federal agencies infrequently protect a visiting foreign official, either at the request of the Department of State or of their own volition. Resident foreign diplomats may receive protective services from the Department of State, local police authorities, or private security firms.

The Panel is disturbed by the diffusion of protective responsibility within our government that is perhaps best exemplified by the inexplicable current practice in which the Secret Service protects a visiting Head of State or Government while the Department of State's Security protects that individual's family and/or the accompanying foreign minister. Often both protective details take place simultaneously. In order to fulfill our international obligations, we must provide for a safe and secure environment for those officials visiting our country. As we raise the level of professionalism of our services, we can demand greater support and security for our own personnel overseas.

Protecting officials from harm today no longer means just having a Bodyguard nor is it a simple task of physically shielding the individual from attack. Days or weeks are spent in preparation for a single visit. Thus, the agencies recruit qualified personnel and expend months of training to teach these individuals the complicated concepts, methods, and techniques of protective security. The same concepts that apply to protecting our diplomats and residential areas abroad apply to protecting visiting foreign officials and their residences in the United States.

The Panel recommends a significant increase in the funding and resources dedicated to the protection of foreign dignitaries and missions in the United States than currently budgeted or anticipated. The Panel believes that the resources expended for the protection of foreign officials and missions in this country have been largely insufficient in the past. Demands for protective services continue to rise as more nations and officials are subjected to the threat of terrorist acts. The issue of reciprocity demands that we provide comparable protection to that which we expect overseas.

You cannot tell me that you think a 13 year old traveling to Mexico without her president of a father is fulfilling any credible foreign dignitary duties whatsoever.

If she was the daughter of the American ambassador to Mexico, of course it would make sense to keep her protected but the point is, plain and simple, that this is an unnecessary risk and expense.

They seem to be having a hard time understanding the fact that no one has a problem with her having secret service protection. The family should have the protection. The problem is taking "school" trips to places on dont travel lists. If the other students want to go fine. But guess what when youre the presidents daughter theres certain risks you shouldnt be allowed to take. Traveling to Mexico is one of them. Its unnecessary and gives a great target to kidnap her and hold the president hostage. It also puts her protection agents at great risk but they dont care about that as long as she gets to have her fun.

Mexico is not on the US Department of State's 'Do Not Travel" list.

The State Department website clearly states that there is no there are no travel warnings for Oaxaca, where Malia is visiting.

You simply lack sufficient knowledge to make this call. You're welcome to your opinion, but it is no more than that. On the other hand, the Secret Service has the knowledge to decide what is safe and what is not. I trust their judgment.

A travel warning is not an order against travel.

Additionally, Oaxaca, where Malia is visiting, does not have a travel warning.

Malia has Secret Service protection.

Malia is safe in Mexico.

That is all.

The secret service does what the president says to do. The only time they overrule him is during active attacks. If they want to visit somewhere they get him or his family there. They can advise against things but at the end of the day its not their call unless an active attack is happening. If they had their way the president and his family would never leave the white house. JFK got shot not listening to their advice and numerous other attacks have happened and almost succeed not listening to their advice. You seem to be the one who doesnt have the knowledge to comment on something. But that should be expected from some one who literally thinks that family is infallible.

Im happy that you are okay with putting those agents lives at risk for fun. Nothing like putting a presidents daughter on the home turf of some of the worst drug cartel violence on the planet currently happening. Even if nothing happens it doesnt mean it was a risk worth taking.

From the state department:
"Nevertheless, U.S. travelers should be aware that the Mexican government has been engaged in an extensive effort to counter TCOs which engage in narcotics trafficking and other unlawful activities throughout Mexico. The TCOs themselves are engaged in a violent struggle to control drug trafficking routes and other criminal activity. As a result, crime and violence are serious problems throughout the country and can occur anywhere. U.S. citizens have fallen victim to TCO activity, including homicide, gun battles, kidnapping, carjacking and highway robbery.

According to the most recent homicide figures published by the Mexican government, 47,515 people were killed in narcotics-related violence in Mexico between December 1, 2006 and September 30, 2011, with 12,903 narcotics-related homicides in the first nine months of 2011 alone. While most of those killed in narcotics-related violence have been members of TCOs, innocent persons have also been killed. The number of U.S. citizens reported to the Department of State as murdered in Mexico increased from 35 in 2007 to 120 in 2011."

http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/tw/tw_5665.html

As usual you have no idea what you are talking about and will just say anything the President and his family want to do is a great idea. Im sure you will be the first to blame the secret service if something happens.

While youre at it please give me 1 legitimate reason why she should be going. Dont tell me to be a normal kid. Shes not a normal kid. Shes the daughter of the most powerful man in the world and the leader of our country which makes her the greatest leverage a gang or terrorist organization could ever have. She gets kidnapped and Biden is president until the situation is resolved. Worth the risk for a "school" trip, not a chance in hell

Clearly you have not taken the time to read the argument... Which means you are attempting to start an argument with a computer screen.

The argument is not weather they should have secret service protection but rather should the secret service take a group of 25 agents to let a presidents child galavant around an unsavory region of the world.

When the Secret Secret Service abandoned Jenna and Barb after the coeds ditched their security for the third time in Argentina, the media did a good job in not reporting that story.

Hats go off to the Houston Chronicle reporter who was able to talk with barb for five minutes at the internet cafe in the Bush daughters' hotel without any secret service presence around her. He kept quiet until they left the country.
