You have to file a real estate assessment appeal. You may download the form from the Fairfax County Web site at http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/dta/pdf_files/2012_appeal_application.pdf, or you may file your appeal online at http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/dta/realestateappealpreface.htm.

For more information, see the Fairfax County http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/dta/realestatetax_assessappeal.htm. You may also call them at (703) 222-8234 or send them an E-mail by using the form at http://icare.fairfaxcounty.gov/ContactUs/.

Unless you were somehow able to finagle yourself into a high-paying job, file for tax relief.

Check with the Fairfax real estate assessment office on when the property appriasal is made and when you need to file a protest. If those deadlines have passed I believe you are stuck with the current tax bill until next year.

One thing to remember is that the sales price is merely evidence of the value of the property. If you got the property at an extremely good price, either because it was a rush or foreclosure sale or because you bought it from family or friends, it is possible that you paid well below the actual market value of the property.

The second thing is before you do anything, figure out how much of a difference it would make in taxes if Fairfax accepted your revised figure. A $30,000 difference in the valuation may sound like a big deal, but when it comes to the amount of taxes it may not be enough to justify a fight.
