my old townhouse in centreville (built in 1996) was built with a metal sheath in between units.

Yeah, I was thinking that townhomes aren't required to have firewalls in between each unit. When I lived in Cameron Station, the townhome next to me was filled with an extended Korean family, and I could hear their kids through the walls. I think a firewall would have muffled that sound.

Hell yes, that's a major concern. That's yet another reason for why I'm glad to have a bit of an older home that was built before the McMansion craze. I'll take property over gigantic boxes any day.

Speaking from my own experiences with construction, each unit is only separated by two layers of fire rated 5/8" drywall. It may not be the case everywhere, but it's what I've seen.

How is it stupid to put fireworks in your garage? Most people don't plan to bring fire in there. It's not much different from storing gasoline in a garage, which is a common practice. They're both very flammable materials.

The flames sparked after a resident left an overheated container of oil in the garage. The heated oil smoldered and was fueled by oxygen when the garage door was later opened, causing the fire to rapidly spread.
Home insurance claim will probably be denied. The two cars in the driveway that caught fire will probably not be covered either by the auto insurance company.

Saw a townhouse fire in South Riding about 6 years ago. Firewall was worthless, as the fire jumped from wood deck to wood-deck.
IIRC, the fire was caused by a mentally-ill man in his mid-20s who doused himself with gasoline.

The fire affected 4 homes-and displaced 22 people? Wow.
Couldn't agree with the McMansion-bashing above enough. It is shameful that we have allowed such unnecessarily dense construction (considering how plentiful land in Ashburn is). Zoning really needs a reset back to reasonable levels, so entire blocks can't go up like this.
