I sometimes post comments elsewhere (oh really?) on Yahoo or Boy Genius report, etc.

A little bit ago I was going to comment on some article or other on Yahoo (news) and was surprised to find, after I had attempted to login using my Yahoo ID so I could post the comment, that Yahoo is now requiring one to allow one's Yahoo ID be sent over to create a Facebook profile before the comment is accepted.

BGR did the same thing, only they require the Facebook ID directly now (only).

That pretty much ended my commenting activity on those two sites permanently.

Maybe it's so that you can see who makes the comments, so you take repsonsibility for everything you write. Many websites require facebook login, keeps out racist comments and allows for actual discussion. FFU should adopt the policy.

It's for data mining and allowing the government to know what your points of views are for future reference, should you need "re-education". I'm not a fan of this social network linking bullshit. I don't mind if people know I like midget toilet porn, or dragons fucking cars, but my opinions on the government, the economy, and society in general need to be kept anonymous. The last thing I want is some brownshirts coming to my door 7 years from now because I disagree with our almighty leader.

It would be great if this site linked facebook to commenting. I'm telling you, it would create much better discussions, without the racism and perversion we see. All the useless threads wouldn't exist i.e. certain posters making threads on themselves (lizzie). People should be held responsible for their actions online, or as I say, if you wouldn't say it in person, don't say it online.

All you'd have to do is create a false FB account and then spend your free time outing people who use their real accounts. You'd better believe my fake FB profile would be named Brock Landers.

This Facebook and Twitter phase can last only so long, hopefully both of them will go the way of LiveJournal and MySpace.

Blessed are the murderous.

The facebook login wards off many people. I know people can use fake profiles, but they are more scared due to possiblities of being found out with email, etc. Sites like WSHH have greatly reduced racist comments, and you don't see people spewing such nonsense on sites such as WashPost.

I have a fake Facebook account and a throwaway Yahoo email account. My trolling the comments on Yahoo articles knows no bounds. Half of the time I don't even read the Yahoo articles; I head straight for the comments!

Articles like the one linked to below are ripe for trolling.

The greatest thing about the internet when it became big was the anonymity. Anonymity allows people to speak their mind with regard to politics. You couldn't really do that back in the day.

It also means you get trolls and so forth, but you just ignore them and focus on the real stuff. Trolls actually serve a purpose, anyway, they expose those with short tempers or no sense of humor and provide the rest of us with entertainment.

Anonymity as a protection for speech has a history. The authors of the Federalist Papers all used psuedonyms, as did the writers of many anti-crown texts during the American Revolution.

Google, whose motto is supposed to be, "Don't Be Evil", is among the worst offenders of this new "ID yourself online" thing. Google gets creepier all the time.

Someone needs to come up a (maybe a plug-in based?) commenting system like Google's now discontinued Sidewiki. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Sidewiki ).

It would be brilliant because it would allow people to comment on websites without it being under the control of the site's owner. You could even comment on a Facebook page, or a government page.

Who gives a damn what the founding fathers thought, they also thought slavery and women not having rights was a good idea. How is being anonymous a good thing? If you want to say something, take responsiblity for it! All this delusion on how the government is interfering with your life, just continue to live in fear. Btw, regarding being anon, have you seen the british show where they go get online trolls?

While I was reading this, for some reason I kept thinking of Anne Frank.
