"Under current law, Virginians who buy items from online retailers aren't necessarily charged sales taxes. But residents are supposed to pay the tax on their own when filing their annual personal tax returns."

Yeah, Im also gonna pay taxes on the $600 I took out of the casino last week, too! Har!

It is a result of physical presence. Amazon started a large distribution center down in Petersburg. When you set up brick and mortar operations, you are supposed to collect sales tax.

Eh, from a logistics standpoint Delaware probably was not that attrative. Petersburg is right were 95 and 85 meet - great place for trucks and rail haulers.

yeah i know. If the alternative was Amazon to increase the free shipping threshold, i'll take the sales tax and free shipping with $25 order min.

Correct, it IS a result of a physical presence but, as outlined in the article, the Governor baited and switched Amazon. Initially, the Commonwealth said it would NOT collect the tax in order to entice Amazon to build their physical presence in Petersburg and then AFTER Amazon bought the land and started the project the Commonwealth reneged and said they WOULD require Amazon to collect taxes beginning in 2013.

This sends a clear message to American industry that the Commonwealth of Virginia is not interested in growth. And perhaps in NOVA that's a good thing. But Virginia is bigger than NOVA...

I'm sure this tax will be used to increase the frequency of paving roads south and west of Richmond. The current once a year schedule isn't cutting it.

It may or may not happen. It doesnt go into effect for almost 2 years and a lot can happen then, but people are right when theres a physical presence somewhere you pay sales taxes. They wont lose any customers as it is still easier to order something especially if its hard to find.

Pretty sure they will.

At least 1 because I won't shop there anymore. Amazon is convenient, but their prices can usually be matched elsewhere (Buy.com, ebay sellers, NewEgg, etc.).

Thats your choice if you want to do that. A five percent sales tax isnt much its 5 bucks for 100 hundred you spend. From the sites you listed buy is alright and ebay is more expensive than amazon.

It is what it is but its really not a big deal. With a facility in VA youll get things much faster too

Would Kindle purchases be subject to this state tax?

Amazon to lose thousands of Virginia customers? Wahhhhh!! Jeff Bezos is shaking in his pants because that will put a big dent in Amazon's 30million+ customer base.

Besides, you know its only a matter of time before all e-commerce is subject to sales tax. Its going to be a nightmare when it becomes reality. Especially for the smaller e-com businesses. They wont be able to handle the complexity of 50 different states' regulations and reporting requirements.

Anything sold in the state of Virginia to someone that lives in the state of Virginia is subject to sales tax. Be it internet or counter sales.

Unless your a tax free get out of jail free don't give a shit about your problems diplomat.

Or a church or a school.....I think.

What about shipping from Amazon to other countries? There is no delivery to my country and I am very sad about it.

Good day, as far as I understand, you need a service that will collect all your parcels in America and deliver them to your country. Check out the Uss-Express reviews, it is a great logistics delivery service and they have a lot of positive reviews. Such delivery is much faster, cheaper and more pleasant because they often offer promotions.

I wonder why we get this kind of news all the time. Sometimes I just want absolutely all stores to safely deliver parcels to any city and country. It would be simple and convenient. All the time there are some problems with logistics, problems with delivery companies and so on. It is very tiring, in fact, when you just want to go shopping.

Guys, no one is forcing you to buy in this particular store. I'm sure there are many good alternatives where you can order something like this, but the delivery will be handled by a trusted and reliable delivery company. This is what I usually do, I don't strive to buy everything in only one store and only with one delivery company.

Amazon purchased a chunk of land in Asbhurn at the west corner of Asbhurn Village Blvd and Route 7. They're going thru the Loudoun County motions of building a large last-mile delivery-warehouse facility. Would result in scores of Amazon delivery trucks clogging local Ashburn roads. Loudoun board of supervisors can't wait for the tax revenue. Residents need to kill it.

What's the problem? It seems to me that the construction of a new warehouse or branch of Amazon will only bring benefits in the sense that residents of nearby areas will receive packages faster. I wouldn't refuse such, for example, because I'm still waiting for the package for quite a long time.
