The end of the manual transmission?
Posted by: Bill Lyons ()
Date: February 19, 2012 07:14PM

In 1970, my father brought home a brand new Jaguar E-Type Series II drop head coupe with manual transmission. After I took one ride in this car, another lifelong Jaguar fan was born.

Fast forward 42 years to today and after a lifetime of double shifts, weekends, delayed vacations, savings, investments and of course, driving sub-standard automobiles, I walked into the dealership today to place an order for a new XKR. Imagine my surprise when I was informed that Jaguar doesn't offer an automatic transmission in the XKR nor in ANY of its current new models. Oh sure, they offer sequential gearboxes with paddle shifters on some of their models but that is not a manual transmission.

I have certainly been aware of the decline of the manual transmission particularly in the United States where it was never really popular in the first place so Jaguar is not alone in this decision. And I can certainly afford to run down a used Jaguar with a manual transmission but it's just not what I've spent my life waiting for...what a revolting development and a horrible day...

So to paraphrase your pompous post, you have saved up enough money after 42 years to put a down payment on a new Jaguar, and since you are such a huge Jaguar enthusiast, you were completely unaware of their range of products and options in the US market.

I think you mean they don't offer anything BUT automatic transmission... and around here, why would you want a manual? Just a pain in the as. The XKR is a sexy ass car tho, congrats. enjoy it!

I've never owned a car with an automatic transmission. I plan to buy a new car this fall and it will have a manual transmission.

even if you could get a manual, your 42 year old knees wouldnt last long using a clutch. at your age you should be more concerned with taking low dose aspirin.

To eesh: Well, you're eesh so, there's little point in responding to your remarks directly...Enjoy your El Camino, sir.

To the grammar police: Manuals...they offer a much more enjoyable driving experience. Granted in NOVA traffic they are a pain but it was never my intention to drive this car in NOVA traffic. Finally, your congrats while appreciated are ill-advised as I will not be purchasing an XKR now. I might consider a Honda Accord as you did, but it's far too sensible of a car...and I prefer a make with more heritage.

To sfghsgjs: I'm sorry you've never driven a Jaguar. If you had you would know it is not just a car. Those Kias are indeed spartan, aren't they?

To Genevieve: Thank you for continuing to support the manual transmission. Porsche is one of the few carmakers left that makes more manuals than automatics.

To Ding an sich: Your Volvo P1800 is indeed an inspired motoring choice and a stunning engineering achievement.

To chondroitin: I'm in the process of scanning my medical records for your formal review, Doctor...however, in the meantime, I can assure you my knees are up to the "challenge" of a clutch as they've been for the last 26 years. In closing, how very NOVA of YOU to tell ME how to live MY life. How's your BMW and why don't the turn signals work?

Funny you should say that, I was never a fan of the El Camino, but I LOVE, absolutely love the 77-79 Ford Ranchero.

Ugh. Subarus of the 80s were so unreliable and rusted out quickly.

I did like that Subaru pickup car that came out mid-2000s.

Blessed are the murderous.

Modern jags are pure douchemobiles. If sombody gave me one I would be too embarassed to drive it. Its so sad when you see these old guys in jags that still think there cool.
Just get a corolla and save the cash for medicare co-pay's.

Manual transmissions don't make a lot of sense in this area. When I moved out here I had a stick and promptly went through the clutch. Automatic transmissions used to suck back in the 70s and 80s, but they are generally pretty damn good these days.

+1

With these new six-speed autos and CVTs out there, they are more efficient than the manuals.

Depends on the car but if it's anything sporty, for me, it's got to be stick.

Though, I recently drove an Audi S6 and those paddle shifters were pretty nice, I could live with that.

Stick shift will go the way of the dodo before long.

The only reason you would own a Jag with a stick shift is if you lived in an area where you can open it up...like Texas. Shifting the shit out of a tightly wound clutch on the Beltway everyday would not be my idea of a great driving experience.

Up until my current vehicle, all of my cars were manual. Fun to drive when it's smooth sailing on the road, which basically puts it around 5-8am on Saturdays/Sundays around here. The rest of the time it's hell on your legs and the clutch.

Simply not true. It depends on the car. My daily driver is a 6-speed manual with a hydraulic clutch (meaning easier to push than a lot of clutches with straight mechanical linkage). Considering the type of car, I would never trade it for an automatic.

cannot be beat. yes, modern paddle/stick shifting "manual automatics" sort of bridge the gap, but nothing beats being able to do it yourself in satisfaction. most, if not all of the time, a modern "manual auto" will be faster than a straight stick when placed in an identical vehicle. i recall a closed course road test years ago with the old ford taurus SHO. one was a normal auto, the other a 5 speed. jackie stewart drove both, and the auto was a hair faster than the manual, but he said the stick was so much more fun to drive. i proudly drive around in my stick, in traffic, and like it. and oh BTW, it's a BMW, but i special ordered the one with functioning turn signals. damn if that wasnt a 350 dollar option.

I love driving manual, but yeah, it can be a serious PITA in heavy traffic.

+1 for the manual transmission!

I've driven manual my entire life, with the exception of my 'learner volvo'.

Yes, in NOVA traffic, yes everywhere.

If you're burning out your clutch driving in traffic WTL, you probably need to change your technique . . .

Too bad about the XKR, its a beautiful car . . . but no manual.

Maybe you should buy a Audi S5, comes with a manual, and if you if you buy used you can get the V8!
