I Wish this Style of Car was Sold in the US

Anyone remember the El Camino and Ford Ranchero? This style of car is still popular in Latin America and Australia.

These are awesome.

I never understood these things. You're losing interior space to accommodate the bed, so it's not as good as a regular car. It doesn't sit as high as a pickup truck, so it's not like you could load it down with construction stuff or take on rough terrain without scraping the bottom.

Am I missing something?

Yeah, it's kinda an in-between type of car. I just think they are cool to look at.

Why it all depends on what kind of suspension you put in the thing. My buddy put sold chrome struts and alloy wheel bearings on his old El Camino. He was able to haul 4 ton of gravel in the thing, which helped him earn a few extra bucks over the winter.

Aesthetics seems to be the main reason to buy one. Slap some hydraulics and some neon lights on there, it would be kinda pimp.

Remember them? Got one. 1962 Falcon Ranchero. It's in the middle of a few mods at the moment. 5.0 and a five speed. Nine inch rear and Mustang II front suspension and steering. At the rate I'm moving on it...it'll be ready for the road in another 30 years.

Too many toys and not enough time.

Holy crap! Sorry bout the photo size.

Is that the original color?

Is a Ford Pinto suspension robust enough to handle that size and weight?

It is "a" original color. Mine was yellow from the factory.

Not Pinto, Mustang II. The rack out of one anyway. The rest of the parts are re-engineered Mustang II parts made to handle disc brakes and heavier struts. Power assist isn't necessary with that setup and it's very easy to use a flexible steering shaft to clear whatever motor I dump in there.

It's pretty standard fare for today's "street rod in a box" projects.

I always thought Mustang IIs and Pintos shared the same platform, parts, etc.

Close but not quite. The shaft in the rack is beefier and it takes a little larger steering shaft coupler. Which makes it sturdier for the larger coupes..late 30's-50's It was a great design really. Stolen from European cars at the time of course. The rod industry has taken it to phenomenal level. Most of the after market frames come ready to bolt one on.

For my application though, weight isn't an issue. The car only weighs 1750 and it wont get much heavier. The engine/trans combo is actually lighter than the original six and three speed.

I asked this before, but do 4 barrel carburetors mean much over 2 barrels?

Depends on if the motor is set up to use the extra gas being dumped into the engine,,,

Guys use to love to slap 4 bbls on engines with 2bbl heads and the engine would just bog down,,,

+1

If your exhaust size hasn't changed, how can you jam twice the air it was designed for through it?

Of course all things being equal, once you've upgraded the exhaust and intake, you don't have the pistons to justify the new flow. Upgrade them and you can't find high enough octane gas to make it all work.

It's like a chess match.......that can end up costing you thousands and thousands of dollars.

What is it you're contemplating putting a 4v on?

Just curiosity. I was reading up on pros/cons of carburetors vs. mechanical fuel injection vs. electronic fuel injection and nowhere was there a good description on the advantages of 4 barrels vs 2.

Rumor is that GM is bringing over the Holden Ute. They filed for a trademark application for the name El Camino back in December 2012.

Been waiting for these for a while. I guess the Obama controlled car industry doesn't like efficiency.

The original vehicle appears to be the Holden Ute. The advantage over a pickup is that I gather this vehicle is probably unit-body instead of body on frame. For the typical home owner you won't need the ground clearance and ride issues of a pickup truck just to get a few sheets of drywall.

As for why it isn't imported, I have no idea. Either it can meet crash requirements, there isn't sufficient demand for this type of vehicle, or more likely it would have to be imported as a car (not a truck) and can't meet emissions requirements.

Remember, you responded to a thread started 13 months ago with a link to a thread created 3 months ago.

But still.......you take the best pics of semi-naked minors and post them without authority, Radiophile.

I don't understand what you are trying to say here. This thread started in January 2012, your "extensive" post that was somewhat relevant was posted December 2012....
