Question for the Las Vegas Aficionados
Posted by: eesh ()
Date: December 05, 2011 01:53PM

I've never been to Vegas, but I might be going to an event held at the Sands Expo. Is this in a decent part of town, like are there decent hotels within walking distance?

It is just of the strip. It used to be part of the Sands Casino. The Venetian Hotel Casino stands where the Sands use to be. You can walk to about 15 hotels...

Thanks, Venetian looks nice, just the pics of the Expo center make it look dingy. Doesn't help their website looks like it is from 1999.

Venetian is nice and Vegas is safe. You can stay anywhere on the strip and get to Sands. Have fun drinking in the streets while you're there.

You will be in the heart of most of the big Casino's. If you want to see the rest or Fremont Street I would suggest a rental car. You can use back roads to avoid the evening traffic on the main drag. You won't want to come back.

I probably won't be looking at staying at any casino hotels, I just want to go to this Sands Expo in January.

It's a good location. Most of the hotels within walking distance are casino properties. Only non-casino I can think of is the place behind the Flamingo.

In that part of town, you'll probably want to avoid staying at the Imperial Palace, Casino Royale, or the Riviera. They're reasonably priced but usually the butt of jokes.

A good compromise in price on that part of the Strip would be the Mirage.

You can get some pretty top shelf rooms there for not a ton of money (less than $200).

MGM is a far walk to the expo center, probably 25-30 minutes.

Well, if you go to Vegas, and actively are trying to avoid the casinos...why go to Vegas again? Cause Eesh is a douche bag.

That is a long walk. Granted you can cab it up Koval, but still.

He can cab it from MGM for 5 to 8 bucks. It's hard to avoid anything casino in Vegas. The airport has slots. Maybe Eesh has a gun convention.

Does Las Vegas have a mandatory maximum cab fare?

like the most you can be charged is 20 bucks, no matter where you go?

There's a Hilton hotel on the same property as the Flamingo. The suites are nice and it doesn't have a casino. It's only a about a 15 minute walk to the expo center from there.

There are plenty of non-casino places in LV, but they're not around that center Strip area.

No. This is the reason the cabs LOVE to take you the "tunnel" route from the airport to LV Blvd. Jacks up the fair by several dollars...

Thanks for the input guys; glad to see you are back frisky.

As far as hotels, I'll just rent a car and drive a distance if it means avoiding the casinos. A business class hotel is fine with me.

FWIW, most of the properties around there (Venetian, Mirage, TI, Wynn, etc) are so huge that it's possible to stay at the hotel without really ever going into their casino. You can even request to stay in a tower away from the casino floor. They also have non-smoking floors in their hotels, if you're trying to avoid that smoky casino smell. Very possible to stay at a resort property and avoid the gaming & party areas.

When we stayed at the Wynne a few yrs we only left twice in 4 days. And regretted it.

When you fly book a non stop. Do not cheap the airfare with some connecting flight you will be sorry. Try the Mirage, nice place and resonable, you only sleep there so dont worry about going to the best hotel in town. Caesars is close too.

That Adult Entertainment thing is being held at the Hard Rock this year, not the Sands Expo Center. I think the powers-that-be in LV finally managed to shove the porn thing away from the Strip so they can focus on big money-making conventions like the Electronics Show and that Outdoor/hunting thing.

Have fun shuttling out to the Hard Rock. Get some tattoos and Ed Hardy t-shirts before you go, and don't forget to wear a gas mask. It gets my vote for the smokiest casino in Vegas (and that's saying alot).

I'm planning on going to the SHOT show. I have no interest in that adult entertainment expo.

That's what I figured, someone else made that false post about the Adult Entertainment thing being at the Sands.

I know someone who went to the last few LV Shot shows. It's a huge event for archery people out west.

South of bellagio is nice, but some of the cabbies do try and take you on round about routes to get higher fares if you dont tell them the way to go. Although they dont charge by the mile it goes by the time youre in the cab.

Ha, but this is the biggest misconception about Vegas. Prostitution is NOT legal in Vegas. The bunny ranch and all other brothels are in and around Carson City/Reno area.

I usually stay at the Flamingo and do most of my Strip-gambling at O' Shea's and Bill's. But I do wander over to Caesars a few times every trip, their sports book is great. Best place to catch up on the games. I used to be big on Bally's sports book, but Caesars has grown on me.

Flamingo is a most excellent location, less than a 5 minute walk to hit all these joints.

I got cabbed thru the tunnel on my way to Excalibur (lol), and it actually seemed like the best route. If there's no traffic on 15, I think the tunnel might be the right option for properties on the west side of the Strip. If you're staying on the east side of LV Blvd. and they take the tunnel, they're jacking your fare up.

you cant really beat the flamingo, bills, bally's, location. the only thing i hated about the flamingo when i stayed there was how long it took to get to my room. i could never find the same elevator twice, im sure this was more user error than anything. then, once i did get to my floor, i had to walk 25 minutes through winding hallways and endless turns. not an easy feat when coming back at 6 in the morning from a night filled with drinking. after the mental breakdown and crying in the hallways it was fun. i think i even fell asleep while walking and woke up walking still.

Strange, one of the reasons I like the place is because it's easy to get around. Yeah, the hotel towers are enormous, but they're laid out well, and there are only two banks of elevators.

Easy to get lost in any of the places though.

Stay at Aria or any of hotels at CityCenter yet? Great place. Not the easiest location to get yourself back onto the strip walkways, but not bad.

You wouldn't really take Koval if you're staying at places on the west side of the strip (the Ex, Luxor, Bellagio). They'd take you up Paradise and then left onto Tropicana. It's not far but there are alot of lights. Those casinos all have cab stands/valets out back near the highway, which makes the tunnel a pretty quick way to get to them.
