From Wikipedia:
The University of Maryland University College (UMUC) is located in the unincorporated community of Adelphi in Prince George's County, Maryland in the United States. Serving over 90,000 students worldwide, UMUC is the largest 4-year public university in Maryland and one of the largest distance learning universities. The university offers 120 academic programs in instructor-led and online classes, including bachelor, masters, and doctoral degrees as well as undergraduate and graduate certificates. UMUC is a member of the University System of Maryland, which includes eleven separate public universities in Maryland.
In short, it's a real, accredited college, with a real campus, that also has a large distance learning community.

Well...yes....sort of. The main "campus" is actually a large building on the College Park campus. It's possible there are classes for UMUC held in the regular campus buildings as well (I simply don't know).

However...though the degrees are real for sure and, IMHO, are quality ones as well, I know for a fact that they aren't (or...er...weren't) treated that way by, for example, mainstream College Park admissions folks.

I knew someone in the distant past who got a Computer Science degree via UMUC with a 3.95 GPA. She then went on to get a Master's in Computer Science from UMBC with a 4.0 GPA. When she applied to the UMCP Computer Science PhD program, the professors in the UMCP Computer Science department OUTRIGHT said "Though we wouldn't publicly admit saying it, we do not consider those degrees to have much merit". Since =I= got my BS and MS in Computer Science at UMCP and know the work that this particular woman performed to get her degrees NOT at UMCP, I know that what these professors thought was NOT valid.

But they did think so. That is, professors from the University of Maryland College Park campus thought their own University of Maryland University College and University of Maryland Baltimore Campus were turkey schools even though the exact same curriculum was offered.

So, yes, UMUC (and other UM campuses) offer REAL, thorough, non-turkey degrees in many subjects but that doesn't mean they'll be accepted as such.

[again, this was awhile ago so may no longer be valid; the particular professor who said the above, for example, has been dead for awhile...]

UMUC isn't bad, they aren't a bullshit college like Strayer or University of Phoenix either.

In fact, you have to carefully read gotchas at "colleges" like Strayer, where they say:

>>> "...Transfer of Course/Degree Credit to other institutions: The student
>>> should be aware that these degree programs may not transfer..."

meaning, of course, they're not "real".

I don't understand why someone would spend good money doing distance learning at a place like Strayer or University of Phoenix when you can do the same thing with an actual university like UMD. Having Strayer or University of Phoenix on your resume is almost like having no degree at all, IMO.

I spent the last two years of college in the UMUC and my employer
thought it was fine. The academic standards were the same as
any others at UM. As I recall you had to have at least a 3.0 gpa
in order to enroll in what we called then, Open University.
Classes met once a week but attendance was not mandatory
but you did have to take your final exams in the classroom
under the watchful eye of your instructor.
The Federal agency I worked for thought "Open U" was fine
but HR would not even read a resume from Strayer. I remember
one idiot who got a mail order degree from National Lewis University
and HR laughed when she applied for a job as a purchasing assistant.

Received a degree from University of Phoenix. That degree, good letters of rec, and a solid GMAT score were enough to get into a nationally ranked MBA program. The schools are what you make of them. They won't fix stupid, but some work and studying will help one achieve financial success.

Google has lots of information about quality/transferability/acceptance of online-degree "universities" and their degrees.

Nuff said.

wtf does that have to do with this thread? Another old blog post about a climategate investigation that went nowhere.

There is a lot that can be improved at GMU, maybe try and use some of that brainpower and put together a coherent post. I'm thinking you're a GMU dropout from academic failure who has an axe to grind.
