Great civil war movie?
Posted by: Mr Orgasm bump ()

I'm waiting for a great Civil war movie. Glory was solid, but was very specific in the 1st black regiment and hardly covered the war generally. Dances with wolves was more about indians than it was the Civil War. So am I wrong? When are we going to get a quality Civil War movie?

Glory was *not* a great film. It had a handful of very good scenes... non-battle scenes. E.g., Denzel's back scar reveal scene. And the scene in the tent where he mocked "Snowflake." And a couple of other good scenes.

But a great film? No.

You.

You say "Gettysburg. Seriously," and you're not willing to back that up?

Are you a man, or a bitch?

Shelby Foote's "The Civil War: A Narrative" is the best TV documentary describing the Civil War. It's a fantastic series that every American should watch.

edit: it's actually a Ken Burns PBS special about the books

Do what? You said it was great. "Seriously."

MOB asked you to expand on that, and you declined, and frankly I suspect you haven't even seen the film.

Maybe you have. If so, I doubt you have the ability to persuasively explain why it was great other than saying "It was great, man!" Maybe adding some exclamation points, or a few "totally"s or "really"s.

However, if you want to "do this," whatever "this" is, be my guest.

So you think it's better than Ken Burns' Civil War, which was too long, but mighty good in spots -- a lot of spots.

Anyway, I'm intrigued. I've tried dipping into Foote's CW books, and really couldn't get into them, which probably says more about me than the books. He was certainly a genuine pleasure to watch in the Burns' series.

Well, checking my Netflix queue, I see it's already there, although not high on the list.

Maybe it will pop up on instant one of these days, and I can give it a gander.

Haven't seen Gods and Generals, by the same director, but I thought it was cool that he commissioned a B. Dylan song for it, the masterful minor classic (imho) "'Cross the Green Mountain."

The Birth of a Nation is not without considerable interest, and if you can see it in a good print, with a good score, can be quite powerful in parts.

To wit: a recent review of a new blu-ray release:
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/27/movies/homevideo/birth-of-a-nation-born-again-for-dvd.html

The opening, or near-opening shot is quite remarkable; although it's hard to tell from this still frame, the movement of people in the middle distance and in the far background give the image a remarkable sense of depth and verisimilitude - of life; it really feels as though the camera has been set down in front of a live slave auction; and for all the racism present in later scenes, this particular sequence emanates a powerful sense of compassion for the chattel-slaves; there is no overt or implied mockery or uncle-tomming here. It is a perfectly balanced shot - both visually and emotionally; one of the most moving and beautiful I have ever seen in any film.

If you are looking for a good movie that happens to be set in the ACW, Glory and Gods and Generals will do. If you want historical acccuracy you probably should look elsewhere,

"Glory", the one with the black regiment, showed them kick some Rebel ass. Confederates were all confused in that one. Made me proud. Big time. Taught the South a lesson that's for sure. Black Union yell: "Run!!! You Crackers, YAHHHHOOOOOOOOEEEEE!!!!!"

There have been a bunch of civil war based movies over the years - most from the 30's, 40's, 50's were not very accurate regarding story, uniforms, locations, etc. Some were fun to watch for us old guys - Santa Fe Trail, with Errol Flynn and Ronald Reagan as Jeb Stuart (Flynn) and George Custer (Reagan), was set right before the civil war and related to the John Brown and the anti-slavery movement. The story is very limited in reality of the characters, but fun.

Other than the PBS documentary noted above, I think the best movie that gives a sense of the scope of the war is GETTYSBURG. It is about 4 hours long and was shot using thousands of civil war reenactors. The story is pretty accurate and you get a great scale of the battle. The uniforms are accurate (most reenactors are required to have authentic uniforms). One scene has 40 cannon lined up firing one after the other - something never filmed before.

I watch Gettysburg every couple of years (it falls into the great war film category for me that is similar to "Zulu" - if you haven't seen that one, rent it).

Excuse an old guy for rambling.

Although a comedy, Buster Keaton's The General is actually a pretty good Civil War movie.

The plot is based on William Pittenger's non-fiction book The Great Locomotive Chase: A History of the
Andrews Railroad Raid in Georgia in 1862
, available to read free online or download here.

Although I have only seen Youtube clips, the recently released Bluray version looks fantastic (set to
720p to watch in HD).

The outstanding cinemtography - as good as any dramatic film - is seen to particularly striking effect
in the battle scenes in the third clip.
