my Dad threw a broken toaster at me once. He was trying to fix it, in the garage one time when I was 5, and I kept bugging him trying to get him to buy me a Thundercats action figure. I wanted Lion-O. He finally got so mad that he just picked up the toaster, which had the metal faceplate thing off so you could see all the circuits and stuff (it was a really old fashioned toaster), and just chucked it right at my head. It missed and hit the side-view mirror on our car. He apologized later that day and we went out for ice cream at Baskin Robbins. He bought me the Lion-O a few days later.

The actual act of hurling my body into various places around the house...most memorable the living room, where the very edge of the solid wood corner of the couch decided to attack the back of my neck knocking me unconscious for a short while...luckily, I awoke in time to finish getting beat down.

My father is my hero, even with the abundance of violence --- there is much to be said for taking accountability for one's actions and oddly enough it is not a call for my father to account for the abuse, but for me to accept the consequences of my actions.

I will never fully know, or remember, the complete dynamics of that time in my life between my father and I, but I do know that I forgive him completely if his actions were in the category of abuse. I love him and only hope that I can gain his respect as a person, son and friend before his time here on earth ends.

A Minor Threat

I used to get hit and kicked a lot. When I was like 14, I got a fractured rib when I got kicked in the stomach...that shit was the worst...being on the ground and not expecting it and getting the wind knocked out also. My grandfather was worse than my dad though. My very first memory was when we were at this Chinese restaurant. i guess i was like 2 or 3. i kept on asking him if i could go to the bathroom and he wouldn't let me. after what was like 30 minutes i eventually stopped asking because i pissed my pants. he eventually got up and drug me to the bathroom and said that he'd give me a "licking" if i didn't piss. obviously i didn't because i already went and he proceeded to beat the shit out of me. i remember basically watching this as like an out-of-body experience from up in the corner of the bathroom...it's kind of weird and hard to describe.

one time, when I was a boy, my Dad was trying to beat Gannon in the last dungeon in Zelda and I accidentally tripped over the power cord and unplugged the NES from the outlet. He got so mad that he hurled the controller as hard as he could at my face. It hit me in the lip and I needed stitches. I still have a little scar where it hit me. It was the corner of the controller that hit me. You know how those NES controllers were all rectangular....they were just a rectangle of plastic with two buttons, A, B, start, select, and the directional pad. The sharp corner hit me.

Damn, y'all, I had a few rumbles with the folks but never experienced NOTHIN like this in my childhood (to the extent these stories are not bs, and maybe i'm naive, but they sound true to me).

I can not speak for Eli, but the memory I wrote about is, unfortunately, true and the weird part looking back on it now, I thought that was normal behavior for every family.

I wish there was a way to tell my father that I forgive him, without the consequence of my father's realization that maybe there was abuse. It is a double-edged sword, if I do not say "I forgive you" maybe he never is free from some guilt that I am not aware of...or...If I do mention it, then there is a chance that it was never realized by him and I just accused him of something he never thought existed.
