Do you get offended if someone calls you Sir/Ma'am?

I know, livin' here in the South, its more common to address people more formally (given our royal background from old England), my nephew is 10 years old and he was addressed as "Sir" the other day when ordering off the menu at a local restaurant. I guess it might be harder for a young woman to be called Ma'am. But usually any girl that appears 16 or older, can be addressed as "Ma'am"> Its different than "Madam". It doesn't mean shes old or anything. Its considered a sign of respect.My wife does not mind to be called "Ma'am" at all. "Miss" seems a lot more demeaning to her.

That being said, Im in my early 30s. Not everyone calls me "Sir". I guess when they do, I feel a bit odd. Not really like they are saying I'm an old man or something, but sort of like they are giving me some type of power and authority over them, which I feel I don't have.

What do y'all think?

I know they mean well, but I dont like it. It makes me feel old. Im in my mid 20s. I guess I just feel like you said, makes me feel like they're acting I'm the Duke of York or something.

yeah, definitely weirdo first time someone called me "sir"

I think you should only be called "sir" if you're wearing a suit and tie. That's a "sir" outfit. Dude in t-shirt and jeans is not a "sir".

I call everyone sir or ma'am if I don't know who they are and I need to speak to them or get their attention. What am I supposed to say? "HAY YOU FUCJFACE, YEAH YOU WITH THE UGLY HAT"

I tell my people if someone is paying us, or if we may need someone to do a favor for us, either now or in the future, start by calling them sir, ma'am, Mr. or Ms. If they prefer a less formal designation they will let us know.

I was raised to call people Sir or Ma'am until they tell you otherwise...my parents have had the same neighbors for 47 years and they have known me my entire life. I still call them Sir or Ma'am.

I expect all coloreds to address me as sir. Also to tip their hats and step aside on the sidewalk as I pass.

Being called sir makes me feel a little odd but I'm a self-admitted 30 something chucklehead.

If i think someone is:

Older = Sir/Ma'am
Younger = Boy/Young Lady

I'm used to being called sir. Been called sir for a while even though I'm only 28. What offends me is when someone calls me guy, boss or chief. I call Gonads Jr. Mister Strife or young man and his sister I call Miss Strife or young lady. Of course, when they're in trouble all three of their names are used. You always know you're in deep shit when all three of your names are used. I mean, who says John Booth or Lee Oswald?
