Pentagram is a doom metal band from Arlington in the early 70s. The band is still around but the only original member is the singer, who started the band. They played at Jaxx not too long ago.

New Potato Caboose was a Dead cover band in the 80's. They recently played the Birchmere. Then there was this gay ass rock band called Pistol also from the early 80's. They got some play time on HFS I remember

Jimmy's Chicken Shack were a bunch of losers who thought they were super famous. They had one video on MTV and were bottom level performers at HFStival. They sucked so bad their asses got pushed to the parking lot stage. Pole smokers

I liked Jimmy's Chicken Shack, but they were more Bmore than our area. If we are including them, we might as well include Good Charlotte.

Kix is still around. They had a number of decent albums, 2 top 10 hits and one platinum album.

Kix was a nationally known act in the late 80s with albums that made the charts and MTV videos. They were from Hagerstown, which is pretty far from here. They were probably on the verge of becoming huge, but then Nirvana happened and all of a sudden long haired glam metal guys were considered douchebags, and radio started playing all alternative rock stuff.

Danny Gatton and the Fat Boys.Danny Gatton RIP The Worlds Best Rock N Roll Guitar Player! There was another local guy way back named Steve Bishop, he was a great player too. Not the guy by the same name today, they said back then Danny G and Steve B were the Greatest round the DC area.. Never heard any more of Steve B. This was bout 1973-74 or so. But Danny G would have been World famous if he wanted to tour..He was very well known! He preferred to stay in the DC area and home in Charles Co Md. Don't ask what happened to him..You punks..!

That said I saw Jimmys Chicken Shack back in August 1992 at the Bottle and Cork..They were young long hair skinny guys then..Jumping Up and Down ..The Music was loud ..the beer was in cans in iced tubs..and was cheap and cold..I was happy..By Now they gotta have Beer Bellys..

Nighthawks too from the same era. They had modest success and Thackery made a few solo albums but really they were more of a beer-in-your-hand live kind of band.

Nils played at least once at the Falls Church Community Center back when I was about 10 and not allowed to go to concerts. (I played rec league basketball, and was mesmerized by the posters announcing the concert)

Too hard to determine 'from' and on the basis of born and raised here that would mean basically none other than some obscure garage bands that nobody has ever heard of. We'd go to G'town, Psyche Delly, etc., all the time to see regular local bands whether they were from here or not. Most often not to see them necessarily but they'd be playing wherever all the time so you'd see them. As long as they were known regular local performers, then I'd count them.

On that basis, I'd count Gatton on that list since he was always playing playing around here and lived locally. You could go out on a given Tuesday night not really intending to and run into him and the Fat Boys or some other kick-ass musician playing a nothing bar with 20 other people counting both of the bartenders. That's pretty damn local.

I wouldn't count most of the others just because they played and you could see them here. Lots of people used to come through regularly. Actually, I wouldn't count any of them since they're all big enough to be considered famous vs almost famous.

Yes Danny Gatton's Fat Boys was Most Def a Famous Band from this area. Yes he lived in Charles Co, but he played in Va, Md and Mostly DC. and he was a awesome player.Loads of folks from NOV saw him play and would consider him a "Local Player" If he toured like his managers wanted him to..His "Fat Boys" would have because a World Famous Band..they were that good. As said he was a home boy at heart, he did some tours and did not like it.

Sadly he took his life in his garage in Charles County In Newburg near the Rt 310 bridge area about 1994. It was a huge sad shock to his fans.. that's for sure. As his music was a good as it ever was..

Matt Abts "Of or Was Of" Govt Mule was from NOVA/Fairfax. He did make the big time in many ways,..but is not a mainstream well known name. He is/was a drummer in the band and 40 + years ago he played with the Steve Bishop guy I spoke about in this thread. In a local band whose name I cant remember. ..Chessman?? Maybe that's it.. Both were awesome players.

DAJAX There was some pretty good loud Roc N Roll bands that played at NOVA in Annandale back in the day..when they sold 3.2 beer in plastic cups and we stacked um to the ceilings..and we could drink at age 18 in Va. when the drinking age was 21 before July 1st 1974..when it went to age 18 for Beer..
I was not a student so I had to find the open door Natch!! Sneaking In Over The Border!! LOL!

agree. nowadays you can go to any blues guitar show and see the exact same thing. he's impressive, but now I know where "jam bands" get their relentless shit from. it's tiring.

I started to say to try the State Theater in Falls Church. They used to have some good local music and some bigger headliners now asn then. But looks like now it's all tribute bands for the next two months. WTF?

Root Boy lived in some apartments off Piney Branch in TP for a while. Those places were full of old people and stoners. Root often hung out at this house on Sligo Mill Road on the Maryland side. A bunch of stoners lived there, too. All kinds of people crashed there. This was back when it was behind the Gino's. The building for the Gino's is still there, but Gino's is long gone. Ah, the days..............

Root actually had national fame. Yale graduate, came from money, but totally whacked out. His real name was Foster McKenzie III, or something like that. He used to play the Cellar Door in Clowntown and sell it out.

When Bill and Taffy Danoff were just Bill and Taffy, they had a stroung local cult following. They were national one-hit wonders. Bill ran a place on MacArthur for many years after the one hit wonderful experience, but I don't know if he still runs it.

Danny Gatton and Buchanan? Arguably the best to come out of Washington Area. There was this pablum Soft Explosion band in the 1970s called Bread. They were awful, but scored a couple of hits. They weren't from here. Supposedly, they broke up because David Gates wanted a heavier sound while the rest didn't. Supposedly, their last national hit, GUITAR MAN, was about Buch.

Nighthawks actually had fans as far north as Massachustts. I saw them play there a few times.

Robert Gordon-Cut a record with Link Wray that made National Charts. Rockabilly guy.

D.C. Slickee Boys-Mark Noone. They got airplay up and down the Atlantic Coast. WLYN in Lynn, Massachusetts used to play their material all the time. They were the house band at 9:30 Club when it was still at 930 F.

Tom Guidara and Angel Band-Guidara was Emmylou Harris' BF. The band was her backup band. She had a strong following. She and the band auditioned in Memphis. The record companies wanted Emmylou, but didn't want Guidara or Angel Band. She jumped at the opportunity and had a pretty good career. She left Guidara and the rest behind.

There is an original member of the Grateful Dead, Jerry Peloquin, who lives in the D.C. Area. He was with them when they were the Warlocks and the early days of the Grateful Dead.

Stacey Lattisaw-Soul singer who had a strong local following but never made it big.

Tahoka-House band at the Bayou before the Nighthawks.

Sky Cobb-Played backup for Chuck Berry every time that he plated this area.

Never saw them, never met them. never listened to their first album. But I did meet a person at restaurant in Fairfax City across from the Massey Building courthouse in the early 1980's, when I was having a cocktail there after work. He said they were very nice guys and talented. The fellow I met there said he was an recording engineer or manager of the band. So I went down to Penguin Feather records in Vienna and purchased their album. It's now hanging in my home on my "Rock'Roll" wall a fame, framed.
