Let's put things in perspective. The article states that they have recovered a total of $3.3 million, and of course the $535 million Solyndra loan is being investigated. So, maybe we'll discover that as much as $1 billion was wasted, IF we doubled the amounts.
Does the $60 BILLION (that's billion with a B) lost to waste, fraud, and abuse by KBR, Halliburton, et al, in Iraq and Afghanistan give you any pause???? That's 120 times the Solyndra loan amount. No waste or fraud is okay, but let's not act like this DOE business is some exclusive left-wing corruption run amok.
Original Article:
"The investigations have already led to five criminal prosecutions and more than $2.3 million in recovered stimulus funds, Friedman said, including “a series of cases involving fictitious claims for travel per diem resulting in the recovery of $1 million alone in Recovery Act funds.”
Friedman’s office and the FBI are also investigating possible criminal activity related to Solyndra, the now-bankrupt solar company that received a $535 million loan from the Energy Department."
For comparison:
The Commission on Wartime Contracting's final report [pdf] asserts that upwards of $60 billion in U.S. tax dollars have been lost to fraud, waste, and abuse in Iraq and Afghanistan over the past decade. The independent Commission was created in 2008 to assess contingency contracting for logistics, security, and reconstruction, as well as to make recommendations to Congress in order to improve contracting practices. The Commission's final report blames the staggering losses on a lack of oversight, poor planning, and corruption.
