How long does bottled beer last before going bad

Just had a blue moon from january 2011 tated fine but I've had other brands that taste vinegary after sitting that long

use by date

does refridgeration help

If you kept it cold then something from Jan 2011 should be okay. The flavor will diminish over time, but it shouldn't be "bad" (spoiled). If it tastes "vinegary" it sounds like it might not be bottled properly and is exposed to air- dump that stuff out, it's gone rancid.

Usually when a beer goes bad, it starts to separate. You'll see material in the bottom of the bottle and the fluid at the too will be clearer than usual.

If you're drinking typical filtered, pasteurized American swill and you see stuff floating in it, yeah, something ain't right and you should discard it.

But some "real" beers are supposed to have sediment in it, it's the yeast byproducts left over from bottle-fermentation and are part of the beer's flavor. So if you buy a bottle of Paulaner hefeweisen and you see sediment at the bottom, it's perfectly fine and ready for drinking.
