Weird Job Offer Situation

Does this seem weird: after a fairly complicated process, a friend was offered a new job over the phone last Wednesday and was told that the formal offering letter and associated paperwork would be sent via email by Friday. He's received nothing as of yet. He called Tuesday to see if he misunderstood and hasn't gotten a call back yet.

To me that seems odd considering the length of the process it took from interviewing twice that I know of and all of the verifying this company did. Even I spoke to two different people on separate occasions. Why would you invest that time, offer someone a job and have no other follow up, especially if he as told they wanted him to start on the 24th?

Personally, I think he's fucked but luckily he didn't give notice to his current company.

If that is how an organization attempt to hire, he is lucky he does still have another gig. Can u imagine how crappy it would be to work there...

No. I forget the name. It starts with a C and has three words. I've never heard if them.

It's an employer's market. They decided to go with someone else and had no need to contact your friend. They want you to research them, find and use the hiring manager's name, suck their balls and embellish your resume to please and wow them. Your friend didn't do these things as well as the other guy did.

Your friend was second choice. First choice declined, then changed his mind, screwing your friend.

Probably a sign that they aren't a good company to work for.

I agree. It used to be, waaay back in a liquid and functioning job market....you applied to job, and, actually got back a yes or no. It seemed to be common courtesy as much as anything. Now, when a corp posts a job opening, what do they get, 100 applicants, maybe 200, maybe more. I just think they feel they don't need to be respectful to applicants. Getting the rug pulled on you at the 11th hour - it sucks, but, welcome to the current world.

that has 419 scam written all over it! By any chance did this involve a Nigerian gentlemen offering employment to work for the Nigerian embassy overseas and all that he had to do was give out his bank account info and his social security number so he could receive a cash advance of his 6 month salary of $500,000? Oh and how he can do this all from his home without any formal education?

I'd say the company had two offers in play and their preferred offer accepted or his references didn't check out.

I'd say it's the first reason. As a former co-worker, I was one of his references and he got the verbal offer about a week after they called everyone. Sucks for him, he was going to get significantly more money and have to work les than his current job.

Maybe it's just me, but you don't verbally commit to something like that and just pull the rug out at the last minute. Probably a good indication of how they do business in general.

Just wow... IMO that is totally a dick move on your part and I'd be surprised if this guy ever even talks to you again. Can't imagine ever pulling that kinda shit on someone I considered a friend.
