Is rest, day abstained from workout, really important?

I know there are some hardcore workout people who post here, people who have read more on the science of exercise and know more then I do. My question is: Is rest essential in a good routine, I mean a day in between sessions.

It depends on workout intensity, frequency, muscles targeted etc.

Nobody can tell you better than your body. Just listen to your body.

That's what I was gonna say.

You'll destroy your body if you dont rest. Exercise causes micro tears in your muscles and the process of repair is what builds strength. If you don't give time for your body to fix those tears, they will just get worse and worse until you injure yourself.

One day of rest at least, but it depends on what your routine is. As a rule, I generally don't work out the same parts more than once a week. Occasionally I will, in order to shake things up a bit but I give those parts at least a day or two in between.

FALSE. Do you think Spartans rested at least one day a week?

It depends on workout intensity, frequency, muscles targeted etc.

You shouldn't lift weights 2 days in a row, always give yourself a day to recover (but it's okay to do cardio on that non-lift day). And it's always good to take one full day off a week. Even if you're just doing cardio workouts, you'll start to get burned out if you don't get some rest days in between.

Resting between workouts is a wise thing to do. For example, I last worked out in 2002 and have been resting ever since. I'm giving my muscles a chance to recover from those very heavy weights.

The best way is to do cardio four times a week and then alternate your daily workout.

The best looking people I see in the gym are those that go every day.

I always question the motivation of the chronic exerciser. As much time as they spend in the gym, I wonder what kind of quality of life they have outside of it? Is it for their health to marginally extend their lives and delay the inevitable? It is vanity and narcissism? Is it insecurity or OCD? I can understand rehabbing an injury, but for weight loss, just eat less. Unless you really enjoy it, gyms can be a major time suck.

You should do 90-120 minutes of cardiovascular exercise everyday, and strength training/weights 5 or 6 days a week. Pick one day out of every 2 weeks to rest, but make sure you fast on that day (no food, only water).

I do workout quite a bit, but you're right. The older I get, the more I see it as a form of slavery to your body. I can understand a true pro. sports figure, doing it cause face it, it is for their livlihood and it's part of their work. I see some people who had put so much time and effort into it, do it almost not cause they really love it but because they must. It could be a tough situation to put yourself into.
