WASHINGTON — The Obama administration moved Monday to complete free trade agreements with South Korea, Colombia and Panama?

Good or Bad?

It's the kind of policy move the repubs would take a lot of shit for, but even with his labor support, OBama will get a pass on it.

These countries combined have probably a quarter to a third of the population of America. We are going to open our markets to the pproducts they make with the lowered standards/labor costs and in return, they will open their much smaller markets to us?

A win for Columbia, Panama and South Korea, not for us.

Obama's Free Trade Sleight of Hand

Pubs got a pass on FTA's since their base is too stupid in the past to connect the flood of illegal immigrants and Big Ag flooding Mexico with farm products. Thanks for the 12 million illegal Mexicans. Thanks for the Ponzi finance of we buy their imports and they buy our treasuries that'll eventually blow up in our faces.

I find it funny that Obama is now flooding Congress with republican ideas and Congress is dumbfounded by them. They don't even agree with cutting taxes any more. Anything to sink a bill submitted by Obama.

The repubs are going to be fucked when Obama starts campaigning hard and repubs can't explain their current policies on not passing bills.

Here comes the switch. Beyond the talking points of these FTAs are a broad swath of new rights to multinational corporations that make the idea of corporate personhood seem quaint. The deals allow corporations to challenge public interest laws in international tribunals, with domestic courts powerless to stop them. Anything from minimum wages and clean water regulations to anti-teen smoking initiatives and recycling rules are vulnerable.

Additionally, they would further deregulate financial services -- a startling giveaway to the same firms that just wrecked our economy -- provide for price hikes on name-brand drugs, streamline exploitation of rural resources, and challenge such popular initiatives as local hiring preferences and "Make it in America" laws. The list goes on.
