What church do y'all attend?

Like most Virginians, I attend a pretty fundamental Southern Baptist church. Our pastor is a bit on the liberal side, but we've managed to maintain a Biblical view of Christianity (unlike the cult of Catholicism). I do feel better after I go to church!

*ALL* Americanized Christianity is corrupted crackpot horseshit. They've made Jesus Christ into a mascot for whatever turns a financial profit or gets the most votes.

Dominionism is a religious camouflage for capitalist imperialism.

"Judeo-Christianity" is an oxymoron for the average moron who believes in the lie of modern Israel.

Prosperity Theology is a religious camouflage for capitalist exploitation of workers and the destruction of the middle class. Prosperity Theology crackpots love MLM rackets and love to kick people when they're down.

The rest of Americanized Christianity is just a massive confusing hodge-podge of posers, buzzwords, slogans, wholesale misinterpretations, homosexual Republicans, and shitty whining music a.k.a. contemporary Christian "music."

Just as money and finance has cancerous derivatives, Protestantism has developed countless cancerous theological derivatives.

The Catholic Church has been permanently ruined since Vatican II. There are still a handful of old school Tridentine Latin Mass Catholic churches but, they don't have any power in this society. The old Latin Mass is a beautiful museum piece without a people to live in.

The best cure for Americanized Christianity is to remove the 501(c)3 tax exemptions and declare TAX WAR on the churches! Churches occupy vast amounts of quality real estate, tax-free, while delivering nothing of real or redeeming value to society. Run the churches through the refiner's fire and burn off the sludge! If only 30% of churches survive, then that's who your real Christians are.

The Catholic church could possibly be repaired with less severity if they returned to the old latin mass and kicked out the queers. The latin mass must have a catholicized world around it to be meaningful. The new-old Catholic church must bring back the precursor to the company town, the Catholic village wholly owned by the Catholic church. The new-old Catholic church must be willing to lose most of their worthless congregation for the sake of keeping the devout ones. Again, if only 30% of the Catholic church survives such an overhaul, then that's who your real Catholics are.

Do that and I'd go back to church.

Southern Empirialistic Church of the Divinity of the Supreme Being, the one one true church which welcomes all of Jehova's children. New members are welcome. Refer to Yellow Pages under "Religious Congregations". Hail to the new and everlasting Prophet.

The Catholic Church is the church founded by Paul. Not sure how that's a "cult" while Southern Baptists aren't.

That's the left hand that's at the right hand of Jesus. I'm sure the rest of him came later.

That is a myth. The Catholic church was not founded by Paul. It came after the original Christian church which was simply called 'The Way". Baptists are actually closer to the original .

St. Peter is known as "The First Pope."

You need to look up the Protestant Reformation and the history of the Baptist Church to better understand the role of the Catholic Church in history compared to Baptists.

I'm pretty sure that you meant to say that the Catholic church was established by Peter, not Paul. Peter was the first Pope.

Organized religion is a scam. I don't attend a church. This doesn't mean that I don't believe in a "higher power". I just think the church has taken advantage of too many people that they have little credibility.

If you need:

A label
A building
A book
To give money
To kill others who do not "accept" your beliefs

...to find your God, well IMO you are doing it wrong.

I would strongly suggest that you abandon that phoney-baloney fundamentalist nonsense and seek a religion that preaches tolerance. You and the pastor seem to be pretty closed minded to other established legitimate religions, hear them out. You may learn that the one true religion is not the Southern Baptist, you never can tell.

"other established legitimate religions"

Now this is funny, what is the criteria to be considered a legitimate religion?

Well put? Are you that ignorant? You ask what is the criteria for a "legitimate religion " as opposed to some fly-by-night religion like the "Church of the guys named Jim", because you have not the brains to differentiate. Then some clown gives his feeble interpretation (provalone) of what a church is all about, which is his simple sordid viewpoint and you say "well put" like that explains in all. You are one ignorant dumb bastard who loves to hear himself talk garbage.

I dont differentiate because I see absolutely NO difference between the "Church of the guys named Jim" and any of the "major" religions. You are so dense that your brain has collapsed itself into a black hole, allowing no independent or rational thought to exist or escape.

I dont see any posts nor opinions from ProVallone in this thread whatsoever and giving the demeaning and condescending context of your statement, I feel it necessary to point out. You are incapable of transcribing a name from 2 posts up, a skill that most 6 year olds could handle without hesitation.

I'll assume you are referring to the comments made by postpoppunk, It is his opinion, as he clearly stated and I agree with it.I believe you need to visit a dictionary about the definition of "Sordid" as I dont find anything morally distasteful about his statement.

Lastly, in reference to your comment "You are one ignorant dumb bastard who loves to hear himself talk garbage." Its just plain silly. Not to toot my own horn but regardless if you like my views they are not ignorant. I am well informed on many different subject matters and have proven my ability to articulat an argument, answer direct questions and cite sources when needed. Im not a bastard as I am blessed with two loving parents in this world.... As far as liking to hear myself talk... eeh, maybe Ill give you that one.

You defeat your own argument and prove my point about you being a nitwit if you can't differentiate between a phoney instituition like "Church of the guys named Jim" and a strong established Religions like Christianity, Judaism, or Islam, I would suggest you do as you claim you do (which I doubt) and research the histories of these great religions. I fancy though that your one of those types who claims to be right and the entire world wrong. Our mental asylums are chock full of guys like you. As far as postpopunk is concerned, she is just a 3 for a dime condescending butthead that is not worth striking the keypad over, and neither are you for that matter. Take a hike and find a job you suck at this one.

Insane asylums? Its not paranoia when they are really after you. I would contend that the history books are a much more relevant place to cite the names of independent thinkers. Ever heard of a guy named Charles Darwin? Do you think that Adam and Eve really met in a garden? Every human being is the product of incest? Nice job dodging the simple fact that you cannot even cite the correct poster then bash said you meant to reference. In regards to the "Histories of these great religions?" Let me ask you a direct question: "If a document or piece of evidence was found that flat-out refutes what is taught in Christianity, would the church kill to destroy the evidence" I think the answer is pretty clear. Absolutely.

Research the history of religious violence. Brush up on the Crusades. Ever heard of a town called Salem? Its in Massachusetts. Church is a business, plain and simple and until our omnipotent government decides to tax one and not the other, they are all on the same playing field. Would you consider Mormon a legitimate religion? It was INVENTED by a polygamist and a pedophile. Religion is responsible for more death over the course of time than all other unnatural causes combined.

Would you care to tee up a few more easy ones for me? In the meantime you should read up on the works of Richard Dawkins, the opinions of Ben Franklin and the words of one of our most revered Presidents, Thomas Jefferson. Do you think they belonged in an asylum? Dont you get it, you are the drone bee, your entire frame of reference on life will always and only be just that. You are too programmed to ever pull the wool from over your eyes. That being said, It would appear that you are the one who is not worth the time.

When I read articles from yourself or postpopunk I am reminded of a quote from Malebranche and I paraphrase here "There are some who decide about everything by the general and very convenient principle that they must be in the right. They listen but little to the reasons of others; they wish to carry everthing before them by main authority and treat who are not of their opinion as indifferent thinkers. Some even without suspecting it, go so far as to say to themselves "if it were so, I should be the clever man I am: or, I am a clever man: ergo itis not so". Both of you should get together and form your own church, an appropriate title would be "the Church of Self Illusion and Love".

I'm just waiting for "Not True's" next feeble attempt at a retort.

EDIT: He beat me to the punch while dodging a direct question. Could you please answer my direct question or comment on the atrocities committed my major religion over the last 2000 years.

The only thing you do is bash me while completely ignoring any relevant argument or statement. This washes your credibility away as fast as you precious churches wash their hands of violence, bigotry, zealots and rampant pedophilia.

If you are done attempting to bash my credibility, could you please resume, or start for that matter, defending your stance? Can you do anything relevant whatsoever? All of the fine folks on this board have already made their minds up in regards to my credibility. Nothing you spew is likely to sway them one way or another. What you need to concentrate on, ironically, is yourself and your own argument because regardless of their views on this specific subject matter, it terms of a debate or argument, I have just pummeled you. On the streets, they would be whooping and hollering that your ass has been served. Disagree? Put together 2 RELEVANT paragraphs and prove me wrong.

Furthermore, in direct contradiction to your paraphrased quote " "There are some who decide about everything by the general and very convenient principle that they must be in the right." I feel this way based on logical assumptions, written history and bullet-proof scientific proof that discredits your stance on this subject matter. The only quote I think is relevant here is in relation to your unwavering support for a business that has never rendered any tangible product for you......

"The blind leading the blind"

Ha!! Look who's talking! Your arguments so far has been nothing but a series of red herrings. You propose questions like the Salem Witch trials which were more of a travesty of Justice (Law) then religion, religion had little to do with Salem, it was a time of superstition. What about this? What about that? Thats all I hear. I don't have time to give you a lesson in Civics or American History. you're the admitted researcher, you investigate on your own time.

You called these Religions "Great" I gave several real world examples of why they are not. One by one, you could sit and swat them down, as a travesty of justice or the doings of men drunk on power, but like the lady who has been in 20 accidents but "none were her fault" I will continue to look at the collective body of evidence.

You are attempting to string together more bad press on me and I have to be honest, I just dont care what you say about me here. The reality is you have failed to do anything more than entertain me and alolw me to share my views while not supporting you own whatsoever.

What about this and What about that? Thats exactly what a debate is, you fucking moron. As a person who claims they could give civic lessons, Ill assume you have seen at least a few minutes of a presidential debate. That is EXACTLY the format they follow.

What about the Crusades?
What have you about the words of Ben Franklin and Thomas Jefferson?
What are your thoughts on the continued employment of pedophiles?
Do you think the churches would kill to keep their control over the masses?
If god created the heavens, earth and man of his own likeness; Why have we as a species only been around for 6000 of the 4 BILLION years the earth has been floating around the sun?
Adam and Eve, incest? Do you think there would be so many variations of human beings of we all had the EXACT same gene pool?

Darwin?
Evolution?
Heretics?

The earth is flat and everything in the universe revolves around us... Those are the views of your religions creators and you have the audacity to tell me I'm the narcissist? Get a clue.

First you need to relax and attack the argument not the man. Secondly, I would advise you use your own line of reasoning that you alluded to in a previous post and seek the definition of "Great". After gathering this info. apply it to the religions I aforementioned and you'll see that it applys, it every instance it fits. I could care what Franklin or Jefferson have to say as they are admitted athiest and prejudice from the get go, not even agnostics but hard core, if the devil would reject, atheist. Adam and Eve is merely a metaphor we live by, nothing else, if we are children of anybody it would be Noah and even that I doubt. The church would not kill, it is self defeating and would lead to a total collapse of the fundamental concepts of a loving religion like Christianity, however a religion like Islam, that professes to love, but only as a facade, would have no qualms of conscience to kill, in fact, killing is an essential part of it's being and dogma. Pedophiles are mentally deranged and of course should work, or they would be a burden on society. However, their employment should be restricted, if they prove themselves to be morally corrupt. Which I think they are, maybe not by choice, but by design.

Go back to your first response to mine, You started the personal attacks. Moreover, had you addressed my comment on Franklin earlier, We could have already gone through the fact that he was a deist, believed in "a higher power" and creationism, his problem with religion is that he did not believe that our creator intended for us to worship its entity, nor did he believe that it intervened in human life. this could have given you a clearer understanding why I liked postpoppunks post; simply stating that the walls of brick and mortar, the fear and penance should not be required to appreciate the absolute stunning beauty that is natural life on earth.

Ill steer clear of all Christianity for the sake of this argument and go directly at the Catholics. If there were rock solid proof that they were a sham, an ancient doctrine, or other key archaeological find, the Catholic church would go to the ends of the earth to have it destroyed before it could be verified. Those that live as false gods and claim that god can speak through them are the ones that should be on the funny farm.

If Jesus could return to earth today I believe he would be abhorred at the way his religion turned out, actually he was pretty much a philosopher and Saint Paul was the impetus behind Christianity, without Saint Paul, there would be no Catholic Church, most likely. The Catholic Church, or the leaders of the church at the time, were responsible for much bad, but then there were leaders responsible for much good also. It is the word 'leaders at the time" which is key to the argument. The Catholic Church had some sick bastards as Popes, who were mere mortals elected by mortals with all the faults and foibles associated with mortality. What hurt the Catholics most was their theory of "infallability of the Pope", that he not only did the will of God, for all intents and purposes, he was God, and the ignorance of the time added a dynamic to that belief.

I see something along these lines spouted constantly... but back it up.

Prove to me it was religion, not people's greed and concerns over water, land, money, power, and other natural resources that has killed more people. Between Nazi Germany, Soviet Russia and Cambodia, you're already at about a 25+ million disadvantage.

The theory of infallibility in regards to the Pope is only accepted by the Catholic Church when the Pope is speaking on terms of faith and dogma. It does not apply to anything the Pope says.

Jesus was more, much more, then a mere philosopher, that goes without saying. What is meant by "philosopher" in that sense was one who laid down the entire foundation of what Christianity is, in terms that mortals could comprehend. A bringer of truth and revelation.

Religion is used as a convenient scapegoat when used to buttress man's inhumanity to man, a simple technique to explain away the complicated.

First - I am a HE

Second - I gave my opinion

-------

Now my basic idea of religion...regardless of the LABEL or BOOK or BUILDING or DONATING MONEY or KILLING ANYONE WHO DISAGREES --- the historically "established" labels all parallel each other in their cores. All tend to have the same ideals on how to treat other humans on this earth, an example would be the 10 Commandments.

Since, the majority of each of these labeled religions teach relatively the same morals and ethics I choose not to label myself as being part of one or another. I TRY to use my knowledge of each of these religions and incorporate what I find substantial into my daily life.

I find that in nature is where I am most apt to be able to have any chance of communing with a higher power. I do not know if I am being heard or if I am being spoken to...all I know is I TRY. I feel lost when it comes to being connected to a higher power and do have hopes of one day feeling that contentment that comes with a relationship with God / Higher Power.

This is my opinion and it will not change.

I do believe that organized religion has proven itself a mockery of what any of their God's would want from them in this world...the death, fighting between labels of the same larger label, hate, prejudice and so much more, IMO, has historically and presently been the exact opposite of the ethics and morals of each of the religion's basic teachings.

Well the holocaust give me 5-6 million Jewish individuals, roughly 63 million died in total during WWII, we could argue all year for a way to divide those between battles for natural resources versus religious intolerance but the holocaust was the catalysis.

the following 2 sites should provide an ample amount of information on major death tolls of armed conflicts, religious or not. Its all cited.

http://necrometrics.com/pre1700a.htm
http://users.erols.com/mwhite28/warstatz.htm#RelCon

If you wanted to throw me a bone, you could factor in the estimated worldwide population differences between the various conflicts (IE: 5 Million killed in the Crusades when world pop. was an estimated 250 Million extrapolates out to 50 Million in 1950 when the world pop was an estimated 10 times larger at 2.5 Billion.)
