Republicans Choose Bachmann with Ron Paul Second

Michele Bachmann captured the famed Iowa straw poll in Ames Saturday, reaching a high-profile benchmark in her meteoric rise to a top-tier presidential candidate.

Bachmann made history as well, becoming the first woman to win the event. She received 4,823 votes out of the almost 17,000 votes cast. The turnout was a significant leap over four years ago but didn't approach the record of more than 23,000 votes cast back in 1999.

The Minnesota congresswoman narrowly outpaced Libertarian Rep. Ron Paul, who had 4,671 votes, and whose red-T-shirt-wearing supporters flooded the campus of Iowa State University and packed the arena when Paul spoke.

Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty finished third with 2,293, a showing that keeps him in the game for next year’s Iowa caucuses, but had to come off as slightly disappointing.

Yup - the Republican Party is a sick puppy and they've dug their own grave. I wonder what the name of the reincarnated party will be? Looks like, semi-nearterm (post-2012 as millions disavow the Republican Party in disgust), we're heading for a REAL 3-party system - this might be a good thing.

People who say that always count themselves among the smarter 50%, of course.

The key to this election, as a democrat, is: Be Afraid / divide n' conquer.

We must strive to eradicate republican sentiment like the plague. Beat them like we beat the Native Americans.

We motivate enough of our voters to actually vote and we
could split the Republicans into two parties (they could call the old republican Party "I'm with stupid.)

If we don't get a decent voter turn out, one of these clowns could get elected.

I used to think of Democrats as the "evil" party and Republicans as the "stupid" party, but I think now it's more like "evil" and "crazy". Or just "evil" and "evil".

The Tea Party isn't really a part of the Republican party. The middle-leaning conservatives are paying the price now for selling their political souls to the Tea Party movement in order to get them control of the House.

The Tea Party is a movement of racists that caucuses with the Republican party, supported by middle-aged and older Americans who after running up debt for the benefit of their generation now refuse to pay the bills for that spending (ref "get your damn government hands off my Medicare").

I hope the loonies get voted out so at least both parties can have rational members.

Ron Paul is starting to sound like a prophet. What he needs to do is find some younger, smoother talking version of himself and let that guy run for office. Even though Bachmann won the straw poll, I think the main contenders at this point are Perry, Romney and Paul - Paul because he has a message a lot of people are starting to connect with.

Romney is my guess for the next GOP who quits.

Bachmann is right about the minimum wage.

If Joe adds $5/hr worth of value to an organisation, no one will hire him at $7/hr.

Price floors always result in unused surpluses and thus deprive both the buyer and seller of the utility they would have derived from their transaction.

This is the mentality that has led to the off-shoring of all our industry,,,

Are you so anti-business that you want us to overpay someone for their labour?

No, she's wrong. Here is a jobs listing from Detroit, filled with minimum wage jobs. People don't take them because they don't provide a living wage. If we had a real free market economy, these wages would rise until those positions are filled. They don't because that's the way corporations want it. They want people to become so desperate that they will become the working poor, living on the streets without healthcare but only to happy to work for next to nothing...

I have a business and would be ashamed to even offer minimum wage, you can't live on that bullshit,,,if you run a good business you can afford employees at a decent wage who are happy to be there,,,at 5.00 an hour they will be looking to rob you blind to survive,,,

I can't even think of a job that is worth less than minimum wage,,,

I think you want your cut to be bigger at the expense of your workers,,,

That does not disprove what she said.

People take them because whoever offers them has the high bid.

This I agree with. Governmental meddling, including but by no means limited to minimum wage laws, gum up the works.

Prove it. Which corporations, which documents. Present them.

Again, not a cogent counter-argument.

But if they were really needed and people weren't taking those jobs, the wages offered would rise. Unless I'm missing something here, I doubt any of those listings are from owners of companies who would say their particular job opening is mission-critical but they will not budge on minimum wage.

If you re-create that list in a month we can see what remains on the list from today's. If they are still there then either you are correct or the skills just aren't there in the labor pool still living in Detroit. If they are not there, the market worked and the wages are at the point job demand will respond to them.

Besides, minimum wage goes farther in Detroit than perhaps anywhere else in the country.

Um...you must have cut and pasted the wrong link for your rant WTL....

$12.00 an hour and $37,000 annually isn't exactly minimum wage.

Do you pay better than that at your Italian restaurant?
