During the 150th anniversary of the Civil War Fairfax County and the Capital Region will host various commemorative events. These events will include reenactments, lecture series, living history events and ceremonies. WASHINGTON -- If you didn't make it to the 150th anniversary Civil War ceremonies in Manassas, here's a second chance to get a taste of living history.
This weekend is the 11th annual Civil War Encampment Weekend at the Sully historic site in Chantilly, Va.
Events include live music and a fashion show, in addition to battles and field tours.
"We have both the Confederate and the federal troops here with cavalry, artillery and infantry and civilian activities, so we've got a lot going for everybody," Sully events and marketing coordinator Barb Ziman said.
Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee was among the re-enactors on hand at Saturday's event.
The Civil War buff frequents the fields to revisit both his family's, and the nation's, history. His uncle was Richard Bland Lee, who owned the Scully house and was northern Virginia's first congressman.
On another part of the field, a re-enactor portraying Confederate Gen. Samuel Cooper was giving a tour of his tent area.
"We're in the field. This is how they lived back in 1861," he said.
A woman from Centreville, Va. said it took eight years to finally get here with her two kids, an 11 year-old daughter and nine year-old son.
"My point of coming was to see some history in action," she said.
Although no great Civil War battle was fought here, Ziman says there was plenty of action. Next year, Sully will mark the 150th anniversary of the Civil War with the battle of Ox Hill, "Fairfax County's signature battle that began in September 1862," she said.
Sunday's hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tickets start at $8.
