Idiot Rick Santorum against early childhood edjumacation for the financially disadvantaged!

I can't make this stuff up. Rick has blurred reality with bad Ayn Rand movies. To follow is what "Give them no chance Rick" said to the Des Moines Register yesterday.

"The government wants their hands on your children as fast as they can."... “That is why I opposed all these early starts and pre-early starts, and early-early starts. They want your children from the womb so they can indoctrinate your children as to what they want them to be. I am against that.”

“We need to get the federal government out of that business. We need a leader in Washington to start talking with the states and the communities to rally parents to demand that the educational establishment in this country start meeting the needs of their child, not children. See, that is the difference. Obviously, socialists love children, just like they love people in groups of one million or more.”

No one in the educational establishment in Washington, D.C., knows the names of your children. They can’t possibly know what is best for them, yet they act as if they do, and that is wrong.”

In other words, Your kids' preschool teachers are (were) indoctrinating socialist! Who knew?

This guys is not right. A very good friend of mine grew up with Rick and was a good high school friend of his. When Rick was a Senator they would have lunch once a month and he would come back and tell me about the conversation. He and his wife had a child die in childbirth and they still brought the dead baby home so the rest of the kids could had some time with it. This is one sick dude.

Most private preschools do not really teach reading or math, so I assume head start follows their lead. They teach ABC's, letter sounds, numbers, how to behave, how to hold a pencil (or paint brush), and how to write letters, numbers, and your name, but they leave actual reading and real math for kindergarden and beyond.

It must be easy being a tea bagger.

Part of the reason under-privileged kids do so poorly at school is because they don't have early education before K-12. Some take advantage of Head Start, but a lot don't. We should have more pre-school, not less.

Sounds more like what the church does...

In part, true. But early education is also important.

When a kid leaves kindergarten, there are certain milestones they should meet. For instance, counting up to 30 is one. In our case, our kids have all entered kindergarten being able to count up to 30. However, underprivileged kids who have had no Head Start may know NO numbers at all when starting kindergarten. They are so far behind that they may not be able to count to 10 by the time they enter first grade. That's why Head Start and other programs are so important.

No they come from parents who are unable or unwilling to provide the kids with the educational and other resources that they need. Sometimes this is because they truly are "fucked up parents". Sometimes the kid simply has needs that a normal parent is not equipped to deal with, and the parents lack the financial means to hire someone else to deal with it. And sometimes it is simply a matter of bad luck. For example a parent whose spouse gets killed in an accident may end up not having the time to deal with a kid because she is too busy working two jobs and dealing with other issues.
