The school says on its website that three juveniles attending a camp at the school reported seeing a man holding what may have been a handgun. They said it was covered by a cloth or covering of some sort, and that the man was walking in the direction of the volleyball courts.

Police have encountered no other witnesses reporting this individual or anything suspicious.

Something tells me some campers may be going home early. Just a hunch.

Why else would a Westfield grad be at a college other than to shoot it up?

---So according to the description a 6 foot tall white male with light brown hair was walking fast paced in the direction of the volleyball courts...with something in his hand...that was wrapped up in a tshirt or cloth material of some kind....under the apparent cloth, there could have been a handgun...or an ipod...or a turtle...or a gameboy...or a dildo....IF U DIDNT SEE A GUN, then STFU....

This I find almost impossible to believe on Va. Techs campus...

H"e was wearing a blue and white striped shirt (stripes were vertical), gray shorts and brown sandals. The subject had no facial hair or glasses.

Officers responded immediately to the area but found no one matching the description. "

Better put, EVERYBODY matched that description and police could not single out any particular, polo shirt and brown flip-flop wearing college kid.

Va. Tech says ‘person with gun’ reported on campus
By David Marino-Nachison
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/crime-scene/post/person-with-gun-reported-on-va-tech-campus/2011/08/04/gIQA47h7tI_blog.html

A person with a gun was reported on Virgina Tech’s campus Thursday morning, according to the university’s web site.

“Person with a gun reported near Dietrick,” the alert on the web site reads. “Stay Inside. Secure doors. Emergency personnel responding. Call 911 for help.”

The alert was posted at 9:37 a.m. In another item posted at 10:08, the university’s web site reported that:

“At 9:09 a.m. three juveniles attending a camp at the university reported seeing a white male, 6 feet tall, with light brown hair outside of New Residence Hall East holding what may have been a handgun. They say the weapon was covered by a cloth or covering of some sort. He was walking fast in the direction of the volleyball courts. He was wearing a blue and white striped shirt (stripes were vertical), gray shorts and brown sandals. The subject had no facial hair or glasses.”

Dietrick Hall is described as a “dining center” that also has a convenience store, bake shop and laundry facility, according to the university’s web site.

Sensitivity to campus safety and security issues has been heightened on the Blacksburg campus since a gunman killed 32 people and himself in April 2007.

Virginia Tech under lockdown because of report of gunman
By Douglas Stanglin, USA TODAY
http://content.usatoday.com/communities/ondeadline/post/2011/08/virginia-tech-under-lockdown-because-of-report-of-gunman/1

Virginia Tech officials are telling students on their website to stay inside, and secure doors because of a report of a person with a gun in the area.

The alert, issued at 9:37 a.m., said the person with a gun had been spotted near Dietrick Hall, a dining area.

Dietrick is a three-story, 93,000-square-foot dining center also houses a convenience store, laundry area and central bake shop, the Richmond Times-Dispatch notes.

Virginia Tech, located in Blacksburg, Va., was the scene of shooting rampage in April 2007 that left 32 people dead and 25 wounded.

The Associated Press says the dining hall is only steps away from where the 2007 shooting occurred.

Update at 11:12 a.m. ET: Larry Hincker, assistant vice president of university relations, says the report was called in by three students attending a camp called "Higher Achievement." He says there are a number of camps held during the sumer at the school, some lasting only a few days, others longer. Asked about the status of the alert, Hincker says, "The alert is in effect until further notice. We are asking people to stay indoors until they hear from us again."

Update at 11:09 a.m. ET: Virginia Tech police Chief Wendell Flinchum says no one is in custody and the alert remains in effect.

Update at 11:07 a.m. ET: At a news conference on campus, a Virginia Tech police official tells reporters that the alert remains in effect.

Update at 10:46 a.m. ET: Here's the school's latest alert:

At 9:09 a.m. three juveniles attending a camp at the university reported seeing a white male, 6 feet tall, with light brown hair outside of New Residence Hall East holding what may have been a handgun. They say the weapon was covered by a cloth or covering of some sort. He was walking fast in the direction of the volleyball courts. He was wearing a blue and white striped shirt (stripes were vertical), gray shorts and brown sandals. The subject had no facial hair or glasses.

Officers responded immediately to the area but found no one matching the description. Police have encountered no other witnesses reporting this individual or anything suspicious. Law enforcement officers from VTPD, Blacksburg PD, Christiansburg PD, Virginia State Police, and Montgomery County Sheriff's Office are patrolling the campus, continuing to look for the subject. ...

Campus individuals should remain indoors.

Update at 10:35 a.m. ET: John Beck, a student who is not on campus for the summer but receives official communciations from the school, says he got the first text warning at 9:41 a.m. ET.

Update at 10:32 a.m. ET: Law enforcement officers from Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Christiansburg and Montgomery County were on campus looking for the subject, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reports.

Update at 10:25 a.m. ET: The school's website says three young people attending a camp at Virginia Tech reported seeing a man holding what may have been a handgun, the Associated Press reports.

They said it was covered by a cloth or covering of some sort, and that the man was walking in the direction of the volleyball courts.

Lynn Davis, a spokesperson for the school, tells CNN the man is described as a white male, with light-brown hair, wearing a blue-and-white striped shirt. He is also wearing shorts and sandals, she says.

Law enforcement officers from Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Christiansburg and Montgomery County were patrolling the campus, continuing to look for the subject.

I have a friend here at work that went to VA Tech, and she still gets the alerts. Per her, there have been unconfirmed additional sightings of the armed individual on the campus and that the School has repeated its message for all students to remain indoors under lockdown.

Jesus. Nice culture of fear we've fostered in the country. Everyone is a bunch of cowards. "OH NOES, stay inside". "Oh noes, the bad brown peoples are going to blow us up."

It's more of a matter of controlling movement on the campus. It helps security and the police to more easily search and get the person they're looking for AND to minimize casualties.

If this "gunman" were going to do something, wouldn't he have done it already?

I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's a false alarm possibly brought about by a bit of overreaction.

Well the campus administration still hasn't learned their lesson. Having a police and security presence isn't enough. The Campus is too large for anyone to have any effective deterrent to these kinds of intruders. You can literally get onto the campus by driving up any one of the adjoining roads, park your car on the side of the road, and walk onto the grounds. They need a tall fence along the perimeter of the grounds, or at least an inner perimeter where the buildings, track fields, etc are located. As you can see from the links I listed above, the campus's recent history has been troubled with significant problems.

Yeah.

My daughter went to Tech for a camp one summer after "the massacre"
She also knew about the Asian guy who cut some woman's head off.

When she talked to me from there she talked about being afraid of anyone that looked Asian.
It was a real fear.
This campus has had an horrific experience. These young girls know about it
and so maybe they get over paranoid...

She should fear the negroes much more than Asians, and never trust the Jews.

For the beheading case, the Chinese male not only cut off her head but when he was caught by the authorities, he was actually carrying her head around with him.

You know this was a false report because the male was described as being white. Everyone knows that slaying at VPI is an Asian thing.

It's false because no white guy wears a blue and white shirt with vertical stripes. It's probably a hispanic lawn maintenance guy.
