Im not one for famous people, tabloids and all of that nonsense, but I heard this clip on the AM talk show this morning and though it was one of the most pompous statements I have ever heard in my entire life... Who does this guy think he is?

This didn't sound pompous to me, and I've criticized people like Sean Penn for make idiotic and pompous statements in the past. The point he is making, somewhat justifiably, is if profit motive was the main driver for educators, they wouldn't work in education in the first place.

Whats not pompous about it? This is simply put, not the way that people communicate with each-other. Not on a daily or regular basis anyhow. He was not up for a pier review preparing while for a doctorate; He was talking to a reporter in a public forum.

He spoke that way to belittle her as he did not like her line of questioning. Look, Im not saying the guy isnt smart and Im sure he knows this topic very well, it just doesnt change the fact that he intentionally spun SAT words at the reporter in a clear attempt to talk down to her.

So it would have been better for him to patronize her by addressing her like she's stupid and can't comprehend big words?

I think the guy was irritated that the reporter was implying that teachers are lazy...which probably rubbed the guy the wrong way given that his mom, a career teacher, was standing next to him.

To me, pompous is Al Gore yelling "it's settled science" anytime someone raises a question about global warming or Karl Rove saying he's got "THE math." Matt Damon articulating a valid point isn't being "pompous," IMO.

"Right..." - Forces an agreement then bulldozes forward

"Its the problem with ED policy right now..." - People with MBA's are the responsible party for the problems with current ED policy.
- NOTE: Arne Duncan is the current Sec. of Education. Graduated from Harvard with a BS in Sociology. Is a sociology degree an MBA? No.

"You have this intrinsically paternalistic view of problems that are much more complex than that." - MBA's think they know whats good or better for everyone else , whether or not they are fully informed in all aspects of the problem.

Based on what Damon has said in the past it probably his purview that ivory tower intrinsic paternalistic way of thinking is what we need to solve the complex problems of the ED as it is surpieror to the MBA intrinsic paternalistic way of the thinking. As noted, the Sec of Ed is not an MBA so I have no idea what his beef is.

It might be justifiable elsewhere but here in Fairfax County were teachers salaries average out to around 83k a year, it doesn't have much in the way of legs.

It is actually higher than that. It has also traditionally been a second income for families. One that has many coinciding days with the days off for children. It is also a 194 day scale. Many jobs are 250 day scales. Meaning they work about 65% of the days most workers do. Plus they get some paid leave throw in there as well. Averaged out, their pay is near $100K/year if they were to work a full year. Not bad for someone with a 4 year degree and a job that comes with some pretty good bennies.

I don't begrudge teachers this pay, but they are hardly the victims they paint themselves to be.

What are the odds of Damon having the same career fate as Tom Cruise?

I think it only a matter of time until Damon does something similiar to Cruis' jumping on the couch follow by sputtering nonsense.

Slow your roll there big fella........I was only using numbers straight from the county budget....I didn't think to go to FFXU for the real deal.

And yeah....if their admin costs sucks the cash out of their budget..that's their problem. They don't ask me how much they can keep and how much they have to pay the teachers.

In effect, if Damon is correct in his assertion that teachers do it because they love teaching, why do they take much higher paid administrative positions after they've taught?

More to the point, you want teachers to make more? A LOT more? Get rid of the administrators that suck the life out of teaching and the money out of the budget.

In at least the last ten years that I know of this county has spent $3000 dollars more per student than the national average. For what? Better administrators?

The issue is that tenure makes it virtually impossible to get rid of bad teachers. The fact of whether they like to teach or not is irrelevant. A bad teacher is a problem at 50K or 150K. A bad teacher with tenure is a worse problem at 50K or 150K.

What he was saying is that you can't use business solutions to solve an education problem. The "paternalistic," or hierarchical approach, of incentive pay doesn't take into consideration various factors outside the control of teachers, like bad home lives, uninvolved parents and decaying school infrastructure.
