Who wants to cut Social Security?
Posted by: step up ()
Date: August 01, 2011 10:41AM

At a press conference held by the House "Out of Poverty Caucus", Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich) lambasted President Obama and called for people to march on the White House.

Conyers says, "We’ve got to educate the American people at the same time we educate the President of the United States. The Republicans, Speaker Boehner or Majority Leader Cantor did not call for Social Security cuts in the budget deal. The President of the United States called for that. My response to him is to mass thousands of people in front of the White House to protest this."

If you make over 2 million you do not not need it.

If you were not born in the USA you don't deserve it.

Everyone in the lower and middle class should get it.

Simple.

As far as I'm concerned, all entitlements are on the table for some reform. If that means raising the SS retirement age to reflect longer lifespans, so be it.

However, if you're a CITIZEN and you've paid into the system, you deserve to receive the same benefits as anyone else that fits the criteria, regardless of whether you were born here or not.

They need to have tighter controls on SSDI. There seems to be some disability fraud whenever there's a recession.

They should remove the cap on Social Security wage ceiling in exchange for a reduction of the top tax rates. It's ridiculous that someone making over $110K pays a lower tax rate. Apply it to employee compensation in the form of stocks and dividends too.

Allow me to correct your statement, Les.

"They need to have tighter controls on SSDI. There seems to be some disability fraud all the time but no one notices it unless we're in a recession"

Social Security isn't even the immediate problem. It's solvent for a couple more decades as it is, and a few tweaks would easily keep it so for decades more. Medicare is the beast.

FUCK Obama if he thinks he is going to fuck with my Social Security. Thank God for heroes like John Conyers. I will be marching side by side with Congressman Conyers when he wants to tell Obama where to shove his Social Security cuts!

Obama orignal plan did not include Social Security or Medicare cuts. Republicans are the ones that wanted those cuts, especially Tea Party members.

I'm surprised that Republicans cut so much out of defense. Usually those pet projects for Republicans.

Asshole. If you are right, that means you are saying John Conyers is a liar. Representative Conyers has been in the House since Obama was barely out of diapers. He has been Chairman of two different Committees. He served his country in Korea. He is an American hero and for you to be calling him a liar is disgusting. Rot in hell!

The OP is an attempt to blame Obama. Consider the source and then get the real facts.

At least $2.1 trillion in spending cuts: The framework would immediately cap domestic and defense spending, resulting in cuts of $917 billion over 10 years.
The framework then calls for more deficit reduction -- between $1.2 trillion and $1.5 trillion worth -- to be determined by the end of this year and imposed over 10 years.

Exempt from this round of cuts, however, would be programs that aid low-income Americans, according to Democrats' fact sheets. These include Social Security, Medicaid, veterans' benefits and pensions, food stamps and Supplemental Security Income.

While Medicare would not be exempt, the framework would restrict cuts to no more than 2% of the program's cost. And the cuts that occur would not affect Medicare benefits nor would they increase seniors' costs, according to the White House fact sheet.

I did consider the source - A respectable and legendary congressman who has served this country for decades. He is a hero and you are a despicable turd to call his words a lie.

SSDI is running big deficits. Its trust fund will run out in 2017 or 2018.

It's time to to segregate all the big programs... SS retirement, SS disbility, Medicare, Medicaid, defense, etc. SS and Medicare have their own funding in the form of payroll taxes and insurance premiums. Defense and VA should probably have its own dedicated tax.

Obama got exactly what he wanted and Republicans got screwed. Boehner should be ashamed.

The Tea Party is the only group standing for American cuts.

I'm in favour of a 100% cut in Social Security. It was a folly when Bismark instituted it in Germany, it was a folly when Roosevelt II the Lame instituted it here.

Tea Party is fake. Each side used a second party to make it appear to the opposition that they had to negotiate with two groups. It's the oldest trick. Boehner has his tea party. Obama had the Senate Democrats.

What a load of shit. The TPM folks are really trotting out all the loons to make sure they paint the Tea Party as terrorists. When one of them gets shot or killed, we can lay this squarely at Joe Biden's feet.

Yeah thats why Germany is the powerhouse of Europe because socialism doesnt work. And ad far as FDR goes, if we didnt have Republicans underfunding every program they dont like Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security would all be fine

Germany hasn't sold all of the manufacturing base to Japan and China. They also have more active industries in growing manufacturing in other countries and aren't generally held back by US sanctions on our own businesses. We supply them with billions of dollars in trade and taxes every year with our military that is stationed over there. So yeah, it is a lot easier for them due to the more focused nature of their economy.

You are correct, they have subsidized much of their manufacturing base. They actually value their labor pool, unlike in this country where we only honor the CEOs..the stock holders. Fuck the little guy. The Republic part behavior in the last week has proven they have only one true mission, to protect job creators who will outsource jobs as quickly as possible.

Or, they could just be replaced by robots...

Apple factory finds answer to worker suicides... replace staff with one million robots
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2021251/Foxconn-Apple-factorys-answer-worker-suicides-replace-staff-1m-robots.html
...Taiwan's Foxconn Technology Group, known for assembling Apple's iPhones and iPads in China, plans to use more robots, with one report saying the company will use one million of them in the next three years, to cope with rising labour costs.

Foxconn's move highlights an increasing trend toward automation among Chinese companies as labour issues such as high-profile strikes and workers' suicides plague firms in sectors from vehicles to technology.

Contract manufacturers such as Foxconn, which also counts Dell, Hewlett-Packard and Nokia among its clients, are moving parts of their manufacturing to inland Chinese cities or other emerging markets.

They are also boosting research and development investments to lift their thin margins.

‘Workers' wages are increasing so quickly that some companies can't take it longer,’ said Dan Bin, a fund manager at Shenzhen-based Eastern Bay Investment Management, which invests in technology and consumer-related shares in China and Hong Kong.

‘Automation is a general trend in many sectors in China, such as electronics.

‘Of course some companies will consider moving their manufacturing overseas, but it's easier said than done when the supply chain is here.’

The China Business News today quoted Foxconn Chairman Terry Gou as saying the company planned to use 1 million robots within three years, up from about 10,000 robots in use now and an expected 300,000 next year....

If they plan to use robots then there's no reason not to build the assembly plants here in the US. Aside from a hostile business environment here, of course.

Because they're big tax cheats. They keep separate set of books for each country and claim the profits are earned offshore.

Les, a lie is a lie no matter how many times you repeat it. There's no magic number that makes it come true.

Companies that offshore their profits to benefit from more reasonable corporate tax rates are following the law as it's written. That makes them smart, not cheats. Don't hate the player, hate the game.

Oh, and if US corporate tax rates weren't so confiscatory and punitive, there wouldn't be such an incentive for companies to offshore their profits. Per OECD statistics, the US—at a combined corporate rate of 39.6%—is second only to Japan among developed countries with the highest corporate tax burdens.

So, Les, why don't you have a nice Dutch Sandwich, wash it down with a Double Irish, and shut the fuck up about "tax cheats." Y'dig?

You just admitted that they cheat. How can my previous post be a lie.

Often, companies engaging in transfer pricing schemes to dodge taxes in one country will do so in more than one country. They keep multiple books. There is supposedly one trillion dollars parked in the US by foreign companies doing the same.

Condoning cheating just deprives the government of taxes and causes taxes for everyone else to be that much higher.

The worst thing about some of these tax cheats like the oil companies, pharmaceuticals, etc. is that the previus administration has driven the country into the ground by spending trillions of dollars on wars, healthcare, and other new programs to line their pockets, and they have the gall to complain about taxes...

The U.S. is completely under occupation and control by the bankers. There is a derivatives bubble that's nominally priced at over $2 QUADRILLION. Two quadrillion and ZERO value. The banksters are going to keep that derivatives bubble propped up at any price, even if it destroys human life on the earth. The Power Elites already publicly declared that they don't need people anymore. Just a small group of obedient technocrats and a supporting army of slaves. Twenty percent max. That means 80% of humanity has to die to save the bankers and this giant bubble.

We voted for this brutal social Darwinism when we voted in the Reagan Revolution and kept voting in the neocons into office after that. Most of us didn't know that but, it's so fucking obvious now.

The fastest fix is for Obama to get a set of balls and declare that ALL financial derivatives to be nullified and illegal. To prevent the shockwave of such justice, he will also have to issue an Executive Order to FORBID foreclosure of primary residences and FORBID rent spikes. The banks may take an apartment complex but they may NOT evict anybody paying anything on rent. Even if it's only 10% and the renter is unemployed because of this depression.

Fat chance because we have only cowards and traitors in power. Nothing short of a mega French Revolution and 10,000 Robespierres on steroids will save us now. Instead of burning down the Bastille, we burn down Goldman Sachs!!!
