Would a bahcelor degree form ITT be worth my time and investmen? I was looking to get a construction management degree. I have been out of high school for a while and wanted to get back at the books.

NOVA has a great IT degree. You learn more and it costs way less than ITT Tech.

If you want to see what plenty of former students have to say about ITT,
Google: "ITT Tech"+reviews

Save your money.

Isn't ITT Tech the place that runs the commercials between segments of Jerry Springer?

From ITT's Wikipedia entry:

>>> "...It may be impossible to transfer from ITT to a traditional university;
>>> per the ITT website, "it is unlikely that any credits earned at an ITT
>>> Technical Institute will be transferable to or accepted by any institution
>>> other than an ITT Technical Institute..."

ITT is for those people who are desperate. And any 'degree' you earn won't garner much respect in the business world. A degree from NVCC would be better.

I can't understand why people allow themselves to get sucked into
these diploma mills. A co-worker (a secretary) signed on with
National Lewis University and paid a fortune for a degree that
was worthless. Employers take one look at these "degrees" on an
application and then round file them. She retired as a secretary.

you're better off going into one of the vocational programs at a community college. if you needed a degree in management, you'd already be working at a contractor.

If you apply your ITT training towards certificates then it isn't a complete waste, but a potential employer will look at your "degree" and tell you that all it is good for is wiping your ass.

Certificates? What kind? Isn't that an expensive way to go about it? I earned many certifications for IT stuff from self study. I noticed that NVCC had many courses for certificates like Network Technology that ended up preparing for the vendor certifications.

I'm a NVCC student at the moment and plan on going to UMUC after I get an associates degree.

Fuck ITT, Strayer, National University, University of Phoenix, Chapman and all of those other diploma mills. "Financial Aid" is simply a loan for the expensive classes. It makes a difference that the name of a state shows up in the school's name. Sucks that I'll pay out-of-state tuition rates. No VA schools do undergrad online... job and two kids make classroom-based classes take many years.

Doesn't ODU have a campus in NoVa and provide online classes? They call it distance learning.

I took some IT classes at Univ Md University College long ago and onsite classes through GW and AU at work. I found Maryland Computer Science classes to be better technical preparation than the generic IT courses at the other schools.

UMUC, GW, and AU are all fully-accredited can-transfer-credits schools.

=========

An aside...I once had a wife (...) who took "graduate" Computer Science courses at GW (she already had a bachelor's in CMSC from Maryland). One of the first courses she took was a Programming Languages graduate course - the level of that course was just about at the beginning level of the UMCP Computer Science undergraduate courses - shocking to the core - totally ruined my impression of GW as an Engineering school, even though they rank way up there in some sort of ranking.

[I have BS and MS in CMSC from UMCP]

If you're at ITT you can use what you've learned to get certificates...yeah, its more expensive but the only way your "education" won't be a waste. The way you did it, self study, is much smarter and less expensive. But nobody here is accusing an ITT "graduate" of being smart and knowing to do that so...

As far as going to class on campus vs online...I have a 40+ hr/wk. job, taking 14 credits on campus, I have 2 kids (3 & 1) and a wife and we're all fine and my gpa is just fine. I started at NVCC last summer semester and this December I'll have my associates, so it is do-able. I will admit that having a flexible employer has helped here and there.

That's listed in 72pt bold font on my resume right below my username...my real name and other information follows but in a much, much smaller font as it is vastly less significant.

Be careful with those "degrees" - NVCC offers two different type of "associates" degrees - one is the equivalent of a 2-year college degree and IS transferable to another college as if you had already studied for 2 years towards a full 4-years bachelors, but the OTHER type is the equivalent of a vocational degree, is terminal, and does NOT transfer - I believe that one is labeled "Applied Associates Degree".

I have a bro-in-law with at least two "Applied Associates" degrees who has been totally unsuccessful getting jobs in those fields (networking et al); for THIS post I'm assuming that lack of success is due to the type of associates degree rather than a personality disorder...

[I have another bro-in-law who has =4= 2-year real-and-transferable Associates degrees as well from NVCC; he's decided to continue on in school, however...lol!...perpetual student!]

Nurses,x- ray techs, insurance claims processor, and pharmacy tech are all areas with massive job growth.

Good call, worth noting for those who wouldn't take the time to research the programs before jumping in.

You're my hero. Seriously. I'm doing it wrong, or something. To be blunt, I think my family life makes it hard - long story that's full of excuses that nobody wants to hear. Last month, I earned the JNCIE (Juniper's version of the CCIE I got 10+yrs ago) and it was hard on my 4yo and 6yo boys. I need to get my stay-at-home wife to pull more weight so that I can just get the degree done. I hear of families where both parents work and one takes classes. Unreal. I have to figure out what fundamental flaw I'm fighting.

NVCC is a pain in the ass regarding testing out of stuff. I had to take several computer classes that were a waste of time and money. Best examples:

Intro to Telecommunications telling me that ISDN and ATM are the future of the internet. No testing out despite doing it professionally for over 15 years.

Some "Computer Essentials 2011" book whose final exam asked the number of tracks on a floppy disk. Testing out was dropped a few years earlier - I know this because NVCC doesn't clean up old web pages and links. I got my A+ in 1996 and the material was the same back then.

At least I used CLEP to get 6CR of English classes.

I have an in-law that went to ITT and faced the transfer issue after committing a lot of time and money to it. I felt bad reading his livid post when he realized that he either has to abandon it or run it the rest of the way through. He's a good guy that I predict will actually get somewhere in the field. It sucks.

Getting a job or being successful changes constantly. I believe I'm successful and the path I took simply doesn't work anymore. Some fundamentals remain similar. I got in rather early and never stopped learning.

Networking has become a basic skill and many people have gotten into the field. I'm not sure how one would get in and go far starting now. All I can muster is a "get in somewhere/anywhere and work your ass off." I think I have one advantage in that I genuinely love networking and IT. That makes it easier to pay dues.

Certifications based on multiple choice exams, AAS degrees, certificates and the like don't get one as far as they used to. I blame that on the idiots that cram their way past the requirements only to show up as useless and ruin the reputation/value of the credential.

My peers assume I have a degree and I don't advertise that I don't. I'm just trying to get it done because getting more certs/experience/clearances won't yield nearly as much ROI.
