Welcome to Fairfax Underground, a project site designed to improve communication among residents of Fairfax County, VA. Feel free to post anything Northern Virginia residents would find interesting.
Ever notice you are watching a movie on TNT and you have to Jack the sound UP almost all the way cuz the actors are muttering and whispering and you can still barely hear the dialogue then cut to commercial and YOU GET BLASTED OUT OF THE ROOM BY THE SCERAMING ADDS!???????????????
I recorded the Stevie Ray Vaughan(amazing musican btw) tribute show or whatever off of PBS. Those fuckers turned down the volume on the program, and tried to make what he was singing inaudible. I guess they think people will leech the music videos or something.
wasn't music videos, but his live performances of his biggest hits.

This is why I don't watch TNT anymore. I think they get more add money for doing this to people. Just stop watching their channel. De-program it from your guide and it won't show up and you won't miss it.

I have a vague memory - from like 40 years ago (!) that broadcast stations were not allowed to have commercials at "higher volume" than regular programming. If that is so (and my memory could be bogus), it sounds like this law is just to bring cable programming into line with broadcast rules.
However...the vague memory I have says that broadcasters "got around" the law by not having ads have a higher volume than regular programing, but by having ads at a higher AVERAGE volume than regular broadcasting - that is, they amplified the lows without amplifying the peaks. End result - perceived higher volume for commercials.

The networks jack up the shows volume slowly till about 1100 pm. This was done to keep watchers awake through prime time.

really? i assumed it was because advertisers knew that during commercials we got up to do other things.
i no longer own a television, but before that time i couldn't/wouldn't watch something that wasn't recorded; namely so that i could buzz through the commercials. how i tolerated television before the days of dvr is beyond me.
