The end is finally near for Border's?

creditors apparently rejected a takeover offer for border's and asked for liquidation. Judge apparently has apporved this unless last minute offer is made

Was in Fairfax store last night. Has a very good magazine selection and will be missed. Barnes & Noble doesn't carry nearly same selection.
also B&N has higher prices imo all around even with the discount memebership

I remember going to Borders for the first time in San Francisco, probably in the late 80s. I thought it was pretty cool. The problem is Borders has failed to maintain quality control compared to B&N. All the stores I've been to in recent years seem grungy and disorganized. Customers misplace shit and the Borders employees never seem to put things back in the proper place. It probably won't be long before B&N suffers a similar fate. The Internet is doing to bookstores what it did to music stores.

At least B&N has an e-reader business and e-book store so I think they will survive at least for some time. I have always found Borders to be clean and nice to go to, I just couldn't being myself to pay cover price for books after Crown Books shut down and certainly when Amazon came around.

Border has computers that you can use to search and browse for books, B&N you have to ask the pimple-faces to search for you. Borders also has a better magazine selection. Other than that they are about the same to me.

forgot about that, yeah pain in the ass at Barnes & Noble. nowadays most of the B&N employees don't have much of a knowledge base and will give up looking for stuff real quickly if they can't find it. Just get out of the way and I'll find it. unfortunately, Borders has such a small database these days that not even worth looking for something considered obscure

I rarely bought a book at borders, just because the price they ask for things is just not worth it. The only time i had much luck finding something for a good deal was when they had their big sale shelves with books ranging from 5 to 10$ I picked up Julie Andrews Memoir for 5$ the book had been signed by Julie Andrews herself on the front page!

Wasn't that really the problem from the beginning?

If only they'd tried harder to sell books one at a time....

This seems backwards to me. Borders is a nice store and Barnes & Noble is to suck. Does the Starbucks make that much of a difference?

Barnes & Noble is next.

Who needs books? Even FCPS doesn't need books anymore.

You own B&N stock? SELL!!!!

I see plenty of demand for books for the near future, but I doubt there is going to be much of a future for bookstores. The problem is that the interests of the book buying public are so diverse it is difficult to see how one store or even chain can cover more than a small portion of that market. Sure they can order it for you, but with the internet you can do that yourself and get the book without leaving your home, and possibly at a lower price.

Books are expensive as hell to print so there is a huge incentive for publishers to move everything online.

im sure it will be a niche market like Jazz unless hipsters get a-hold of it like Vinyl Records and bring them back. The idea of holding a book in your hands is kind of nice. But then you think of the storage of books and it would be a pain unless you were hoity toity and wanted a library for the "look" and "tradition" of it.

Sure, having a local Border's books was convenient if you didn't want to wait on Amazon. However, on the other hand, going into one of their retail stores and paying cover price on their books wasn't my idea of fun. Sure, this won't mean much competition for Barnes & Noble. However, if they, too, are already selling their books at cover prices, it's not like they can jack the prices higher.

The days of brick and mortar book stores are facing a great demise. But, this begs the question; What will gothic teens, emo teens, queers and poor college students do for work?

Thanks to all of our tax dollars the library right down the street is still open...

I also do believe that they have books to read for free if I am not mistaken?

Imagine that? A place that our own hard earned dollar pays for that offers a book that you too can open and read for free... WOW

I am also willing to bet that this place called "The Library" that is funded by our taxes..... takes requests. It too can carry Harry Potter and The Making of American Idol.

I am willing to wager that if you ask they can order a book on your request.

Even if you had to pay another fee of maybe $10.00 a month to be a member would that not be worth it? After all the books are free... The only issue is that you have to return the book after you read it.

"Thanks to all of our tax dollars the library right down the street is still open..."

do you mean the libraries in Fairfax county that has been forced to slash it's hours over the last couple of years because the county reduced by over 1/3 its already low budget allocation

I think the county govt would like to zero out the libraries

Wonder if this happening across the country

You should submit that to News 4. Perhaps Liz Crenshaw can do a segment on that...

"Can library books kill you? Tune in at 11 to find out!"
