your = possessive - acceptable usage: your mom is hot. are those your donuts?

you're = contraction of "you are" - acceptable usage: you're cool. you're an idiot.

One thing that really grinds my gears is when "too" and "to" are misused...

Unacceptable uses...

"Too what end?"

"My iced tea is to cold!"

Really not that difficult, people...

"Andrew, come back, brah."

How about loose and lose.

As in...I need to loose weight. Which should be I need to lose weight.

And everyone screws up its/it's

Really It's not that hard, just stop and separate the contraction to see if you need the apostrophe. It's a chocolate donut. (It is a chocolate donut)

I have noticed more and more people confusing the words "wary" and "leery", bastardizing and combining them into saying "weary". I want to punch people in the throat who do that. People even write it now.

I figure if yer paying to much attention to speling yer attention is in the rong direction.

If you can understand what the post is about, that is sufficient.

(past/passed) what annoys me, is when people say "she past away"

she "passed" away, is correct.

why is it so hard???

also, the "irregardless" doesn't exist. the word is "regardless"

Raptured:

You are wrong. These things make a difference because they signal level of education/concern for others/pride in oneself or lack of any or all of those items. The signal can cause you to lose a job or not get a job. It's kind of like having tattoos or not. Kind of like having a heavy foreign accent. Kind of like brushing your teeth or not. Kind of like wearing a bikini or not to your court date. It shouldn't matter, but it does. Subtleties matter whether you like it or not. The human brain has a hard time not responding to these things. I agree that they should not matter so much, but unfortunately they do. We should be able to put our elbows on the table, slurp and burp, and pick our noses in public.

Nonsense.

When yer posting on an internet message board yer spelling doesn't mean anything - it is the message yer conveying that counts and only the message.

When you're submitting a resume somewhere or writing advertising copy or communicating with Someone Important In Your Life then you worry about things like spelling.

Otherwise, don't fret it - get the message out any way you want (if you WANT to be uber-correct in typing, go for it! But if yer like me wearing dirty glasses and having dys;lexic typing fingers while juggling a cup of coffee ... who cares!?).

Dictionaries have been around for 400 years now. The first (English) ones contained only the definitions as spelling hadn't yet been standardized. Over the next couple hundred years, spelling and grammar rules became standardized, so much so that folks who don't spell well or adhere to commonly accepted grammar rules (or who choose not to) are looked down upon as second class.

This thread is a perfect example of this.

The Virginia Standards of Learning are known as the SOLs. There is no need to put an apostrophe: SOL's. It's plural, not possessive.

The presentation of the message is just as important as the message. Sure, write like a hip-hop caveman if you want, but don't be upset when people immediately dismiss what you say. If someone's participating in a written discussion about politics but they can't write coherent sentences, how can anyone expect them to understand politics when they don't understand the basics of English as taught in the 4th grade?

I'm almost with you, Raptured.

Pasion and fervor can sometimes contribute to "mistakes" in messages. However, in this day and time when texting moves more and more into the day to day lives of everyone, learned shortcuts are everywhere. Most of which are based on incorrect spelling to begin with.

Add that to those that are graduates of the FCPS and you've got a recipe for complete nonsense that occasionally hurt to read.

I would like a lesson on the future perfect continuous verb tense. Or is that tence.

It is "20 or fewer," not "20 or less."

The word as you know it, "forte," is pronounced fort, not fort-ay.

How are you?

I am "well." (not "good")

Maybe 50 years ago.

Quote

Both the one- and two-syllable pronunciations of forte are now considered standard.

(um...that's sad however what I wrote was an example of future perfect continuous verb tense..........okay, AND a form of sexual innuendo)
