Obama: Time to "eat our peas" and pass debt deal

President Obama is still seeking the largest deficit reduction deal possible as part of a package deal to raise the debt ceiling, he said in a press conference today.

"I continue to push congressional leaders for the largest possible deal," he said from the White House. "It is possible for us to construct a package that would be balanced, would share sacrifice [and] would involve both parties taking on their sacred cows."

Mr. Obama would not even entertain the notion of failing to get a deal done before the end of the month.

"We are going to get this done by August 2," he said.

The president and his economic team have repeatedly warned of catastrophic consequences for the U.S. and global economy if Congress does not increase the debt ceiling -- the amount of money that the U.S. government is technically allowed to borrow -- by August 2. Republicans have insisted on creating a deficit and debt reduction plan as a condition of voting to raise the $14.3 trillion debt ceiling.

Obama: "irresponsible" to hold up debt talks
Boehner says Dems not willing to make debt deal

Mr. Obama has been seeking a deal that includes $4 trillion in budget savings over a decade, but House Speaker John Boehner said on Saturday that a mid-size package of reforms -- closer to $2 trillion in savings, with no tax increases -- is the only politically viable solution.

Mr. Obama said today that he appreciated Boehner's efforts to try to reach a large deal with him, but that the rest of the GOP must now step up to the plate.

"I've been hearing from my Republican friends for some time it is a moral imperative to tackle our debt and deficits in a serious way," Mr. Obama said. "What I've said to them is, let's go."

The president said today he would not accept a smaller, short-term deal. "We might as well do it now," he said. "Pull off the band aid. Eat our peas.

"Eat your peas" is probably some focus group invented slang that pollsters and hype men think will catch on and show Obambi to "be really SERIOUS about reform!"

Yeah right. This dickjacker has been burning through our money since January 2009 and hasn't said or done shit about reform. Obama believes in government, not people.

It's some very clever political gamesmanship,,,,he put way more out there than the Dems wanted to, knowing the GOP won't budge an inch,,,,

The party of NO doesn't know how to compromise any more,,,

This will leave the responsibility for this failure on the republicans alone,,,

Could quite possibly lead to the formation of a real 3rd party,,,

Obama talking about debt and reform? Give me a fucking break. Stimulus anyone?
Bailout anyone? Continuing and extending the Bush wars and adding another in Libya?

Cash for clunkers? GM and Chrysler bailouts?

This fucking jerk is not serious.

Fuck these clowns in DC. Fuck every single one of them. If I can make the hard choices in my own house, they should do it in "theirs".

Obama, you ran for the job, spent for 100's of millions of dollars to be elected. If you're no up to the task anymore then leave! You act as though you were royalty born into your situation. Stop the whining.

The Republicans were fools trying to play hard ball against that deal,,it was a trap and they fell for it

I doubt this "eat your peas" thing was the result of focus group research. It has more to do with Obama's nanny state mentality most likely stemming from the absence of a strong father figure in his life. It sums up his view of us as a people and his role as our "ruler" not leader. Our Mommy not daddy.

Off the cuff remarks as juvenile as this show Obama's true character and level of maturity.

The majority of Americans are against raising the debt ceiling, or eating our peas using the President's metaphor. Also more and more people realize that if raising taxes would have cost job growth 6 months ago as Obama said at the time, it would surely cost us job growth now especially since the economy is worse.

Elitist ruling class snobs eventually become transparent to even the dimmest dolts in our society. Condescension, patronizing whatever you want to call it are not effective qualities in leadership. Insulting the intelligence of the people you are seeking support from is not wise. The Dems need to learn this fast if they want to survive and tell their leader to stick to the script written for him on the teleprompter.

It may not be from market research, but I think these numbnut jackwipes will try to turn it into some immortal catch phrase in the vein of Reagan.

You're right, Oblame-a did rattle about tax increases causing job loss when he agreed to maintaining the "Bush era tax cuts".

I think the "eat your peas" thing was a dig at the Republican representatives who are childishly refusing to compromise in the slightest when Obama's clearly been willing to. I don't think it's aimed at voters at all, other than, again, to make moderates see how terrible the Republicans are acting.

I think you all are just looking for yet one more thing to confirm your pre-existing feelings for Obama, but that's your right I suppose.

Nice...

President Barack Obama, in a CBS News interview scheduled to air Tuesday night, warned that, absent a deal, he can't guarantee older Americans will continue to receive their Social Security checks.

"There may simply not be the money in the coffers to do it," Obama said, according to excerpts released by CBS.

Ummm...technically Social Security is a forced savings plan for workers. If that money isn't sitting there to be paid out to those who have paid in, then where did it go? Oh yeah....stolen "borrowed" by the government to pay for other shit. As a person who has a family member who's SOLE income is Social Security and has paid into it for over 60 years and has never abused the system, this is unacceptable.

The fact that these motherfuckers sit there and act like spoiled children with their temper tantrums, unwillingness to compromise, unwillingness to do the hard stuff that their job requires makes me sick to my stomach. If I had two kids fighting like this, I'd smack the shit out of both of them and ground them indefinitely.

This country is fucked.

All the proof that you need that there is NO Social Security lockbox. No "money in the coffers" to pay social security benefits? Where'd the money go?

Good thing we've had our stimulus and the Summer of Recovery is in full swing!

Obama is not one to talk about fiscal responsibility after the bailout, the stimulus and the pending Obamacare. Fuck that punk.

If only they'd let us decide who to believe and then go with what they say.

Earlier today I passed by a tv with some unnamed official looking member of Congress on it. He was standing in front of a thousand microphones and said somewhat the following:

The president is lying. There is more than ten times the amount of money needed to keep us from defaulting on our loans available.

Wish I was paying more attention to who the guy was. But if he's correct, he wont be alone in his assertions.

I have no doubt that if we default, the earth will open and demons will come forth and eat all the little babies first.

I just wish I didn't believe they were using fear to push through more of the same bs that got us here.

Al Gore? The guy that ran against W. the first time? He said there was no lock box?

Wouldn't that mean that his former boss, Bill "I like a nice wet cigar" Clinton didn't have a lockbox either?

How could that be? Does that mean W. is just as good as Gore and Clinton or just as bad?

I was pointing out that in campaign 2000, there was talk about what to do with the surplus. Gore wanted to use it for a Social Security "lockbox" of money that will never be borrowed or anything so that it will remain solvent for the foreseeable future. Bush wanted to "give the money back" to taxpayers, and to save Social Security, privatize it.

So, as far as I know, that is the origin of the "lockbox" term in regards to Social Security. Oh, how poetic it was to hear Al Gore talk about a "lockbox." Just imagine it in his voice. It was just like that.

So, my "splaination" is that I was making a joke that instead of a "lockbox" offered by Gore we took the cash money instant payout offered by Bush.

Lets say you started your worthless fucking career in 1980 when the DJIA was around 800. We had the Reagan tax cuts, the 1980,s boom, the 1992 Republican congress tax cuts, welfare reform, bush tax cuts and now 30 yrs later after all the crap we've been through the DJIA stands at around 12000. Fat fucking chance your FICA "contributions" would have ever kept up with the returns realized in the privatized market over the last 30 years. To bad Johnny. You could have been a millionaire! But as it stands Johnny your just the same fucking stupid idiot with your hand out as you were 30 years ago.

That's true. If the money had actually been there we would have avoided many problems.

And wow. Someone got angry about nothing but me mentioning that there existed a push to privatize Social Security. Damn. Calm down, man.

Your're the one pointing out Bushes partial privatization idea was bad. I showed you historically that isn't factual. Now we have a bankrupt system where you'll be lucky to touch your money by the time you're 70.

And as far as "payouts" ? You can't payout money you didn't confiscate to begin with.

Facts are facts Jack. You would have a lot more money saved for whatever if you got to keep it instead of the government taking it and giving you an end of life IOU in return.

But Hey Johnny! Don't let me dissuade you. If you think it's such a great deal I would recommend investing all your savings in the United States Treasury. Why stop at just your FICA and medicare "contributions"?
