Inova cites desperate need for blood donations

Inova Health System officials say blood donations are critically low as the demand for blood has spiked in the past two weeks.

Inova hospitals have seen an increase in patients, including those needing blood because of traumas, surgeries, transfusions and labor and deliveries.

“It is a critical time for the community to pull together and support one another in a way only volunteer blood donors can,” said Terri Craddock, director of Inova Blood Donor Services.

Inova Blood Donor Services currently is doing a “pint for a pint” promotion donors will receive a coupon for a free pint of Baskin-Robbins ice cream through Aug. 31. Visit inova.org/donateblood or call 866-866-256-6372 to find a donor center or blood drive.

David Curtin, a golfer from Springfield, took silver in the men's 18-hole tournament.

Rose Pleskow of Reston, who competes in track and field, took bronze in the 1,500-meter run and placed fourth in the 800.

Elizabeth Klein, a swimmer from Alexandria, won gold in the 4-by-50 medley relay, placed fourth in the 50- and 100-meter freestyle, and came in eighth in the 4x50 freestyle relay.

Strickland earns national recognition

Fairfax County Park Authority Board member Harold “Hal” Strickland (Sully District) recently was selected by the National Recreation and Park Association to receive a National Voluntary Service Award. NRPA will present the award at the association’s 2011 Congress & Exposition in Atlanta, Ga., this fall.

The National Voluntary Service Award is presented to a citizen whose voluntary contributions have improved the quality and quantity of leisure opportunities through recreation, parks, and conservation programs and projects.

Strickland has served on the park board since 1992. During his tenure, he served as chairman of the board six times. He has championed youth sports, created a synthetic turf field program, led the way in the creation of a 4,000-acre assemblage of parkland holdings in western Fairfax, and helped to establish the Park Foundation in an effort to diversify funding sources.

“Hal has shown the rest of us how to get things done,” said Park Authority Board Chairman Bill Bouie. “He is always looking down the road, figuring out what needs to happen next and how we can do more for the residents who love our parks.”
