Where are the clearest skies around here?

When I was a wee lad about 50 years ago I remember seeing the Milky Way in the night sky - and I lived either in Arlington or McLean at the time; the sky for sure was clearer back then.

I want to see the stars again.

I want to show my daughter the stars for the first time in her life.

So where's a good location to look up at night? Skyline? West Virginny? Where?

Probably a good 5-6 hours away, but Cherry Springs S.P. in Potter county, PA is one of the darkest places on the East Coast. It has zero light pollution and is a haven for amateur astronomers. You can see the Milky Way and most of the Messier objects with your bare eyes there. It's up on a mountain in a very remote part of the state, the only town nearby is really small and more mountains block any light coming from the homes there.

Wow - that really IS in The Boonies! Your response is much appreciated but I'd think there has to be someplace a bit closer than that (but it is intriguing - can't argue with astronomers!).

Head down to farm country in Southern VA, inbetween Stony Creek and Emporia. I couldn't believe it when I saw the entire Milky Way down there, and you can see meteors flashing across the sky every few seconds. It's so dark that you can tell a car is headed your direction from miles away.

Sky Meadows is where the local NOVA telescope club goes, I think.
